Sunday after noon services were Mr Labaren of Mesa George Williams and Bishop Frank Tyler Martin Mortensen and David Lee are called to fill missions in the Samoa Islands They expect to leave sometime during the coming fall The Academy library is open on Tuesday Wednesday Thursday and Friday with Mrs Sessions in charge Many avail themselves of an hours rest and quiet there A few near relatives and friends were entertained at the home of Bishop Frank Tyler Sunday afternoon in honor of the birthday of Mrs Carnie Matthews the bishops sister The afternoon was spent in social conversation and eating ice cream and cake The Mutual Improvement Association is becoming a great drawing card as many strangers attend every Sunday evening At the last meeting several loads of young people came from the Phillips Vocal solo The Arrow and Song by Gordon Kimball All of the program except the instrumental numbers were compositions of Longfellow and all were beautifully rendered Saturday at six oclock about twenty five people gathered at the home of George Williams where they all left for Orval Allens ranch to give Mrs Allen a surprise social in honor of her fifty second birthday The party consisted of local and some stake religion class workers who desired to do honor to their ward president Mrs Allen was found in the corral milking the cows and was very much surprised The early part ot the evening was spent in an impromptu program which proved to be spicy and interesting Mrs Allen was presented with a beautiful rocking chair Mrs Inez Lee making the presentation speech A number of pleasant games followed this after which several freezers of ice cream were brought in from the carriages and Mrs Allen declared that the surprises would never cease A pleasant half hour was spent in disposfoor of the cream and cake Mrs Allen was over- joyed at the shown her honor and reject LAYTON John West is on the sick list this week He has a case of la grippe to dispose of Charlie Geitz our snare drummer has quit1 his job and returned to Pennsylvania from which State he came with A Jacobson a few months ago Charlie is a good bov and we regret his departue Moses Steele is still a great sufferer from a chronic trouble of many years standing and is in a very poor condition Patriarch Samuel Claridge of Thatcher visited Mr Steele Sunday last after which he delivered a fine discourse at uprising of serious proportions has broken out among the Taos Pueblo Indians at their village seventy miles northwest of East Las Vegas New Mexico and troops hurried by special train from Santa Fe to check possible massacre of white ranchers The Indians cut all telephone and telegraph wires from Taos but reports received at East Los Vegas indicate that their depredations so far have been confined to an attack on the wife and children of Myers a homesteader cutting fences and looting horses and cattle Further attacks were expected by the ranchers and Judge John McFie conducting court at Taos telegraphed an urgent demand for troops to Governor Mills before the lines were cut The governor at once ordered fifty men of Companies and New Mexico guards to Taos The uprising of the Pueblos for years a peaceful law abiding people is believed to be caused by the punishment of Pueblos by Territorial authorities For years the Pueblos governed themselves electing their own chiefs and village coun cillors who tried and punished malefactors of the tribe without recourse or appeal to the Territorial authorities Some months ago an Indian of the Isleta pueblo was imprisoned by Territorial officers and in spite of appeals to the tribal courts and the councillors of the village was put in jail Since then the Indians have been unruly For several weeks ranchers near Taos have found fences cut and their stock missing but the discontent of the Indians culminated Thursday in the attack on the Myers household Taking the census is also believed to have caused much unrest among the Indians When the enumerators reached Santo Domingo and Fan Dia pueblos they were refused all information concerning members of the tribe and were threatened with violence Only after a threatened call for troops and former Governor Curry had gone personally to the chiefs and reassured them about the purpose of the census were the Indians persuaded to answer questions Later The threatened uprising of
