1918 Mrs Jenkins Central Arizona My Dear Jessie Just a line to say I am well and getting along fine although we have lots of rain I have begun to think I am a duck rather than a man I have just found out that I was made tall for some purpose for if it wasnt for being tall I guess I would be in mud over my head all the time Some rain no Ha Ha Just saw a bunch of German prisoners go through here today and I cut a button from one of their caps I am enclosing it I dont know whether it will go through or not They sure seem to be happy that their troubles are all over and there wasnt any of the bunch under forty years old One of them was sixty years old I am sure it isnt going to be long now until we will all be home I do hope you are well Dont worry about me for I am well and feeling fine We have been moving around quite a bit lately Wallace is off on a pass somewhere near the Italian border He will be gone about ten days in all so I guess he will be back before very long All the rest left home He is surely fat and the same old chuck Wallace got a letter from Harry Thomas He is in a hospital wounded in the leg butis about alright now We have seen several air battles lately You should see them dive at one another just like a hawk going after a chicken They are so high they look like a small hird It sure sends a thrill through a fellow to watch them also to see one dive at an observation balloon and to see the fellows come out in their parachutes while it is on fire It is just like a big circus Am also enclosing a Hun coat button dont know whether it will go through or not but am quite sure the little silk French embroidered apron that I am sending will go through alright- Will close with a world of love toll As ever Lorenzo Msn Jenkins Hdqrs Company 740th A A France you are doing thesame I am now at on a furlough or vacation which alH soldiers get after a time at the front I guess I was lucky to get mine I spent fifty days ati the front and then was sent back iui a real vv uiiuvt tieiituua la the only boy back here with me that is from home Thi3 is a nice place for a person to spend their vacation is a big resort and is located in a picturesque yalley along the French Alps not far from the Italian border It is at the foot of Mc Rovard and within a quarter of an hours walk of Lake Bourget the largest and one of the most beautiful lakes in France At Aix Chambery and Challes there are abundant opportunities for a fellow who likes outdoor life and outdoor pleasures A SAVE YOUR APPLES New Process Gives Splendid Results in Clean Dried Fruit Apple growers in this valley have a splendid chance of embarking in a new industry saving all the windfalls and smaller sized apples and drying them under a process which is given by President Kimball with the result of producing a much better dried fruit than can be purchased ih the market President Kimball says There is no end to production if we will but devote ourselves to industrious effort Graham county is ideal for apple growing a market unsurpassed in the world and all fresh apples sold already By way of saving the by-products of the orchard and conserving food for war and other purposes we hauled in cartloads of windfalls hired women who needed the pay and took care of all fruit that there would be no waste What seemed too little a thing for some proved a good proposition to us but formerly it was discouraging to dry apples because the worms got them We tried a new plan which I here want apple growers throughout the State to learn if they have not already discovered or learned it Proof of the pudding is in the eating try our dried apples and prove our assertions Wash the apples clean provide peelers then have thein cut clean and in good sized pieces then spread them in trays and fumigate with sulphur before setting them out in the sunshine to dry Make a box as nearly air tight as possible fit inside slats so that the trays can be placed in the box like drawers are moved in a desk or cupboard make a doer or hang a heavy sheet in fronL Fill your trays say ten or twelve according to the capacity or demand of your orchard After the trays are all filled with fresh cut green apples slide all the trays in and then place an old pan with fire coals under on the ground and sprinkle plenty of sulphur on the fire Subject them to the fumes tor some hours maybe all night then take them out and lay the trays on frames under the burning sunshine hies and insects wont touch them but to be absolutely safe cover them with mosquito bar to keep them clean The trays are so handy that if a rain storm comes up you can pile them up or slip them in the box Just a little attention and in a few days you have perfectly clean dried fruit immune from insect pests and free from flies dirt and germs The vapor bath so to speak to which the apples are subjected bleaches them white the sulphur is healthy and the fruit will keep and if eaten directly will prove delicious Try it Scald them freely wash well then soak them all night to develop them or swell them to normal size then cook in same water and season and you will agree that the Kimball method of drying apples surpasses the California evaporated or any other kinds on the market NOTICE TO PARENTS It appears to the Board of Trustees of Safford School District that conditions prevailing on account of the Spanish Influenza are such that we are warranted in holding that compulsory attendance of children is inexpedient and impracticable at the present time The statute does not require the enforcement of the compulsory school law under these conditions and we desire to advise patrons of the Saf ford Schools that we shall not attempt to enforce the compulsory school law until after the first of January If it appears that further extension of time is need ed notice will be given through the columns of Hie Guardian Eugene Evans Chambers I Paxton Board of Trustees QUARANTINE LIFTED At a special meeting Message Rates For Pacific Coast While other sections of the country have always had the benefit of a reduced rate for short over night messages without restriction the Pacific coast has never had the benefit of night I message rates except to comparatively nearby points This has now been corrected by tat ranntol Rnlocrr hVin lino 1 ordered that effective January 1st a universal system of night messages at greatly reduced rates shall obtain in all parts of the country Manager Maude Walpole of the local Western Union office advises that under the new schedule of night message rates the people of the Pacific coast will have a rate as low as 50 cents for messages of ten words to New York Cjty and other places on the Atlantic Seaboard with an added charge of only 2 cents per word for additional words To Chicago where the night message rate has been 60 cents and 4 cents ior each additional word the new tariff is only 45 cents plus 2 cents for additional words while corresponding re ductions are made throughout the system Ttf nearby points the minimum rate is reduced from 25 cents to 20 cents There is a very large and constantly increasing need for quick communication across the continent which this new system of short over night letters at cheap rates is well designed to meet It should prove a great boon to business interests on the Pacific coast by bringing them into close Walter who as man on the Battleship Arkansas has been serving his country Arkansas November 21 1918 Dear Mother The war is over and as they have abolished the censorship on this ship I can now tell you all about where I am and what I am doing I guess yoU have been wondering where I have been the last four months Here goes We left Norfolk Va on July 14th for foreign service and landed in the Orkney Islands Scotland on the 25th the Orkney Islands are off the extreme north end of Scotland We stayed there only long enough to coal ship and shoved off for Edingburgh Scotland We had a little excitement on that trip about 930 the first night out I was on watch in the fire room when they sighted some subs and right there is where we did some work for about thirty minutes believe me The subs were only a little way off and let go two torpedoes but the navigator saw them in time to swing the ship enough that they both missed one missing the bow by about 15 feet the other passed astern Believe me the little 3 inch guns on this ship were spitting some bad and smttiner it fast The subs were less than one half a mile away and there were two and sometimes three shells in the air at once from each of the two rf mch guns they did not use any of the 5 inch guns Well we sent one of them down to Davy Jpnesjs locker and an unguaii uesixuyer Kut anocner one and the other two there were four of them submerged and got away But down in thexfire room was where we sure pulled off some stunt As soon as the subs were sighted the indicator in the fire room rang for full speed and we began to feed the black diamonds to her In less than five minutes we were making over 23J knots Now this ship is only supposed to make 21A knots and the best that she ever made was 21J so you see that was sone speed record We got into Edingburgh the next morning and made that our base ever since We have made a trip out around Heligoland every weeit or so Dut had no more excitement except one time we got a lew shots at a sub and dropped a few bombs but dont know whether we got it or not So we ended it all this morning wnen we went out to meet the German fleet We sure were expecting to have a little excitement but nothing occurred They surrendered without any trouble and we brought them in They are lying out here in the bay now There is no longer any reason for us staying over here so I guess we will get under way for the States in a week or so or maybe sooner This is some country here but I dont like it very well so will be glad to get back to the grand old A I have had four liberties three to Dumfurland one to Eding burgh I have quite a collection of postcard as souvenirs 1 will close for this tine answer soon With love from Walter WILL NOT OPEN SCHOOL Owing to the fact that so many All You Need for Christmas Membership in the Red Cross BIGDRIVESTARTSDECEMBER16 This WU1 Be the Last Call by the Red Cross in a Drive for Funds The Red Cross has announced that unless the unforseen happens it never again will stand before the public asking for contributions and subscriptions in a drive for funds with which to carry on its humane work Not that the great organization expects to discontinue but because it expects and hopes to derive its sinews from other sources has it taken this position The other sources are Memberships in the Red Cross For one dollar per year any man woman or child may become a member The organization has announced a drive for memberships to begin December 16th and to close December 23d It is called the Christmas Roll Call this drive Who will be able when he considers the deathless glory of the Red Cross to refuse it a dollar as a Christmas cift especially when he knows beyond a doubt that the dollar will go abroad to succor a starving person or to take comfort and cheer to a soldier who fought for the Great Democracy which is now a fact instead of a dream and who is so wounded and disabled that he is doomed to lie on a bed of pain while his buddies are receiving the homage of America on their homecoming Who is there in America who could put a dollar to other use when the Red Cross asks him to join the great comradeship Said the Prince of Peace Suffer little children to come unto me and forbid them not for of such is the Kingdom of Heaven There are thousands of starving children in Europe today and unless the Red Cross feeds them they will be hungry on the day when the world is celebrating the Nativity of the childrens friend But the Red Cross will feed them All over the world it will requite evil with kindness For cruelty and inhumanity or the memories of those attributes do not deter the Red Cross in its Chnstly mission But its funds are being used continuously It has given boundlessly in the last four years And the public has given boundlessly to the Red Cross Therefore no further appeal is to be made for money per se The Red Cross asks only that you evince your loyalty and appreciation of the good which this Christmas has brought to the world by becoming a Red Cross member It asks you to wear a Red Cross button the badge of membership to indicate to the worldthat you believe in service to humanity in distress that you have faith in the goodness of man and the mercy of the Christ whose birthday has rolled around again this year to find Peace and Good Will among men The organization of the Red Cross would have a hundred million members did every person in the United States join But such a consummation is of course impossible The Red Cross will be satisfied if 65000000 of the population expresses its commendation of Red Cross work by taking a membership That would assure a working fund sufficient unto time of Peace and even guarantee that the era of reconstruction and rehabilitation in the other hemisphere be prosecuted with efficiency and despatch by the Red Cross Out of the dollars which you will spend in the next few weeks spare in the name of the Humanitarian who was born 1919 years ago a dollar for the Red Cross If you cannot spare it or have it not then you are blameless If you can spare it and do not your celebration of Christmas will be a mockery For the Red Cross symbolizes the very spirit of giving and serving two of the tenets of the gospel preached by the Man born in the manger and heralded by the Star of Bethlehem vtrr mtemmBmmssmamsmm.
