ClK CiKUC, Montreal, Saturday, September 1 0, 1 988 H-7 Funnyman Jay Leno bring 'Gold patrons' find price of movie tickets going up and up wisecracks to Place Thomas Dill which the film-maker is the detective. We can also look forward to The Decline of Western Civilization: The Metal Years, a raucously loud motion picture, which we are told is supposed to contain footage of heavy-metal rocker Ozzie Osborne drying out at the Betty Ford Centre. The film is directed by Penelope Spheeris, 42, who also directed the film The Boys Next Door, starring Charlie Sheen and Maxwell Caulfield. The film was shown three years ago at the Montreal World Film Festival and was so grossly violent that Martin Sheen walked out of a screening, even though his son had a starring role. Trivial pursuit: Spheeris's father is Costa-Gavras's uncle What does that make her? Also of note, her mother has been married nine times.

Montrealers William and Norma Springford have made a gift of 92 acres of wooded property at Welsford, N. B. to the University of New Brunswick. The Springfords, who are both UNB alumni, worked for Northern Electric when they moved to Montreal in 1942. William, who graduated in electrical engineering, worked as an engineer, of course, while Norma, who graduated in 1939 with honors in philosophy and English, worked in the advertising department.

Mrs. Springford taught at Concordia until 1983. The following year Concordia recognized her 30 years of teaching by awarding her an honorary doctorate. A plaque officially identifying the land as the Springford Reserve will be erected. The land will be used by the university for a variety of forest-related activities.

Anyone out there with a spare 92 acres for McGill University? Just asking. Madame Zubie was asked why the woman who won the $54 million in Florida took so long to claim her prize. "She had a Lotto nerve," replied Zubie. Funnyman Jay Leno will be firing plenty of one-liners on Friday when he performs his one-man show at Place des Arts. With the U.S.

presidential campaign, Leno has lots of ammunition. Leno, the official guest host on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show, was one of the first comics to cap-italize on the presence of vice-presidential hopeful Dan Quayle on the Republican ticket "But Quayle does have a couple of pluses over (Democratic counterpart) Lloyd Bentsen a blow dryer and a pulse," Leno cracked during a recent hosting stint on the Tonight Show. Leno, winner of the Elmer humor award from the satirical Harvard Lampoon revue, is one of the hottest draws on the North American stand-up circuit. In fact, after Eddie Murphy and Howie Mandel, Leno is the third-highest paid performer on the circuit, grossing $44,000 U.S. a night according to Billboard.

Leno is slated to give a two-hour show without intermission or opening act Friday evening at Salle Wilfrid Pelletier in Place des Arts. Showtime is 8 p.m. Tickets are $26.50, $23.50 and $20.50 and available at the Place des Arts box office and all Ticketron outlets. For credit-card reservations, call 288-2525. One of Canada's hottest comedians, Norm MacDonald, is back after a year-long absence because of illness.

The Ottawa-born wit, who appears this weekend at the Comedy Nest, was a hit at the 1986 Just for Laughs comedy festival. Living proof that Canadian content isn't a cultural curse, Mac-Donald is at his best taking on our political leaders. One of his most piquant sketches involves Brian Mulroney, John Turner and Ed Broadbent battling it out in a Grade 2 arithmetic class. MacDonald isn't beyond tangling with other icons on the Canadian scene, either. For example, he enjoys explaining why NASA chose Canadian Marc Garneau for the space shuttle several years back: "They needed a subject for their motion-sickness study, and it was either a Canadian or a chimp." 96.9 97.7 460.7 B-paORONTO While mem-, bers of the general public can catch a screening of a at the Toronto Festival of Festivals for only five bucks, Gold Patron passes have been priced at a whopping $1,500.

For that amount, you get just about everything, with the possi-, ble exception of a date with Shir ley MacLaine. She'll be in Toronto for the world premiere of her latest film, Madame Sousatzka, directed by John Schlesingor. High-rolling film buffs on a more limited budget can opt for the $300 "I Want It All" pass, which admits the bearer to all films, including opening and closing films and all parties I hate to admit it, but as far as celebrities go, the Toronto festival has it all over Montreal. The VIPs confirmed to attend include Richard Gere, Oprah Winfrey, Bonnie Bedelia and Diane Keaton. Gere will be here Monday to his latest film, Miles Home, which has been thoroughly revamped and re-edited since its less than auspicious debut at the Cannes film festival.

'Gere's co-stars in the film are Judith Ivy and John Malko-vitch. "Oprah Winfrey will be a key- note speaker at the Cineposium J88, a gathering of film commissioners that opens Monday. British director Michael Apt- ed's latest film, Gorillas In the fvlist, is being screened at the festival. The Quebec-made film The Revolving Doors, directed by Francis. Mankiewiecz, was described by one Toronto magazine critic as "thoughtful, well-considered and well-shot but it lacks spark, energy, romance the things it's A film called Brain Damage directed by Frank Henenlotter is being screened as part of the Midnight Madness series.

When Henenlotter was a child, Tie watched the film The Tingler while sitting in a seat wired to deliver a mild electrical jolt at appropriate moments. He also collects antique surgical tools. Toronto festival-goers are already discussing some of the films to be released across Canada after the Festival of Festivals ends Sept 17. Some of the more unusual offerings we can expect to see include Hotel Terminus, a 4 -hour film about war criminal Klaus Barbie and the Holocaust The Thin Blue Line, which Is being screened here today, opens next month.
