the Interstate Commerce Commission announced its decision through Commissioner Prouty in the case of the Maricopa County Commercial Club of Arizona vs the Wells Fargo Express Company involving express rates from Missouri river points east and various points on the Southern Pacific coast and those between Phoenix Arizona tfner variousnoirifs on lines of the Southern Pacific anq Santa Feimostly in the Territory of Arizona TJie Commission found that the revenues of the defendant company were excessive and that its charges might well be reduced if in comparison with other considerations theytwere unreasonably high which was found to be the fact and lower rates were prescribed by the com mission The defendant is the only express company serving Arizona Territory and it was insisted that this monopoly resulted in extravagant rates but the only evidence tending to show that the rates attacked were unreasonable was the comparison of rates prevailing in other sections The base rate governs the changes on all shipments large or small The question of graduated scale employed by express companies was not attacked as this is uniform throughout the United States Mer chandise and general special rates are the important ones the former covering packages and the latter perishables The new rates established from Kansas City by the order of the Commission necessarily automatical ly reduces all rates from all eastern destinations up to and including New York Early Closing for Safford Stores The following business houses of SafTord will close thr stores at 700 oclock every night outward sign of the graves will be in the form of a headstone or monument made of Arizona porphyry Eastern Hardwoods in California The Pacific Coast will soon be the Bcene of an interesting tree growing experiment The United States Forest Service is planning to introduce a number of the more important eastern hardwoods into California and will this year experi ment with chestnut hickory bass- wood red oak and yellow poplar or tulip trees Small patches of these trees will be planted near the forest rangers cabins on the na tional forests and if these do well larger plantations on a commercial scale will soon be established on wider areas There are over 125 different species of trees in California a number of which produce some of the most valuable varieties of lumber in the country Although considerably aver one half of the species are hardwood or broadleaved trees yet with the exception of the exotic eucalyptus there is not a single species of hardwood here ranking in commercial importance with the leading eastern hardwoods Climatic conditions in many parts of California are undoubtedly favorable for the growth of a number of the valuable hardwoods and the absence of those trees Is due mostly to un favorable factors of seed distribu tion If the experiments are successful a valuable asset will have been added to the forest resources of this State which should prove of special benefit to the local furniture and vehicle industries Chestnut and red oak are highly esteemed for furniture while with hickory bass wood and eucalyptus at its command California should lead all other States in the vehicle industry Will Celebrate Independence Day Mesa Arizona located in the Salt River Valley will hold the first celebration since six years ago on the coming 4th
