Treasury since the second loan including the month of June. Yet every district oversubscribed its quota, the Minneapolis district leading with an oversubscription of .2 per cent. THE WOMEN'S LAND ARMY A number of the newspapers of Arizona that pander to the farmers, stockmen and agitators, are venting their Spleen against the corporations, especially those engaged in mining. How foolish this propaganda is can be readily seen by a look over the situation. Mining pays one-half the tax of the state; it furnishes close to 70 per cent of the haulage of the railroads; it has made possible the operation of business enterprises that could exist under no other condition: it furnishes employment to more men at better pay than all the other employes of the it ha been the means of opening the wilderness and making it safe -for the fanner and stockman: it has been the great civilizer and has done more for humanity than all the other producers of the world.

Had it not been for mining there would not today be a railroad west of the Mississippi river, nor would there have been a great chain of states on the Pacific coast. Alaska would have been a term incognito, given" over to snow and ice and the poor Esquimaux. And what would Arizona be today were the mining corporation banished from its Even Governor Hunt, who has been against the mining companies, made his money from these self-same companies at Globe. And today, it is the mining companies and the miners of Arizona that are furnishing the sinews of war for the state. Every mining camp goes over the top in every campaign, whether it be for Liberty, Bonds.

Ucd Cross or Thrift Stamps. When it comes to the big donations it is from the mining companies or the men who are engaged in mining that the money willingly comes. Arizona needs them all fanner, stockman, miner and railroad, corporation and individual. The fact that some of these little nincompoops have no stock in a corporation should not blind them to the good that corporations are doing. We need them, one and all, no matter what line they may be engaged in.

If are unable to have a corporation of our own, we should be glad to note that our neighbor is prospering in one. Kingman Miner. HEADING RIGHT Attorney General Wiley Jones is on the right track now on the state road fund money and in reversing himself and reaching the conclusion, in part at least, that was contended for by Lamar Cobb that this fund was intended to be handled exclusively bv the state engineer. The attorney general is nearly right, but it is the view of most people, held now as K'fore, that the entire fund should be handled by the state engineer and that none of it should pass under the control of the Commission of State Institutions. It is common knowledge that the framers of the bill and the legislature intended the entire fund should be handled by the state engineering department through the state engineer.

We hope to see this fund entirely in the hands of State Engineer Atwood with no strings held by any other body because the road building department is the biggest single thing in Arizona and is in a class by itself and not be hampered by a lot of red tape. Aeeoridng to the Attorney General's opinion he now holds exactly to the point of what County Attorney J. F. Kos. of Cochise, contended when the board of supervisor had before them the road controversy with the state engineer's depaitment, following Attorney General Jones' first opinion which gave the power to the Commission of State Institutions.

PROUD ARE WE OF OUR BOYS The American boys at the front are maintaining the tradition of American amis and giving the lie to the German propaganda that we were a nation of money grabbers and weaklings. When the full strength of the American army has been thrown against the hordes of the Kaiser then will the people realize that the trust imposed in our soldier boys is in capable hands. We believe that within six months the direction of the allied armies will be in the hands of the Americans, and then will begin a push that will send these monsters of oppression reeling back to Berlin. There will be no more congratulatory telegrams that Willie has made great progress toward Paris, nor will there be a pause in the onward rush of our troops into the peaceful territory of Germany. We are proud of our boys.

Their deeds will do down in history and story through the centuries and the name "American" will be a conjure word for all that is brave and humane in mankind among the peoples of the earth. THE THIRD LIBERTY LOAN The Third Liberty Loan yielded subscribed to by about 17,000,000 buyers. Secretary McAdqo congratulates the country on the result, which he says is "irrefutable evidence of the. strength, patriotism, and determination of the American people." The loan is larger and the number of subscribers is much greater than any previous loan of this country, and every bond buyer bought with the full knowledge that he would be allotted the full amount of his subscription. The Saturday Evening Post sounds the keynote in the coming elections in the following solid chunk of wisdom: "It is better to keep ten men out of office on suspicion than to let one traitor in." We will do well to take this truth to heart.

Americans can not afford to elect any man to power upon whose complete loyalty there can rest even the faintest shadow of suspicion "or doubt. The country has more than enough lenders of proved loyalty, and their services should be secured. Ability and loyalty should be the only tests. Upon these two qualities in our nation's leaders hangs our destiny in the days that are before us. TURN IN THE NAMES OF SLACKERS The registration of men who have reached the age of 21 years since last June was not a complete success in this section.

It is certain that not all of the young men who should have reported for military service did so. The slackers must not be allowed to evade their duty to their nation and it is up to the public generally to bring the shirkers to the front. It is the rule" of the national government that any person who may report the case of a slacker to the, authorities shall not have his or her identity revealed. No one need withhold information as to a draft evader because of fear of becoming personally fnvolved in the matter. But it is the duty of every patriotic citizen to see that such information reaches the local seelctive service board without delay.
