Sterilized There hnve been four cases of typhoid fever in SafTord this summer and numerous causes have been assigned for the origin of the disease but the latest was that it came through the butter made by the SnfTord Ice Creamery Co This caused the people to look up and aa reaiit the editor or hie uuak JIaW accompanied by a prominent physician went to the creamery Wednesday and made a thorough investigation of the entire plant and of every method used from the time the milk is delivered Until the butter is shipped and we do not hesitate to say that it is absolutely impossible for any kind of a germ to exist in the butter at the time it leaves the factory After the cream is extracted it is placed in a large vat that has been thoroughly cleaned with steam before the cream isjourcd in This vat is called a7izajAgitator The cream is kejft in constant motion twenty mliutes undJr a temperature of 155YFY and every one knows that lif cannot exist at temperature atove 140i Then this vat the victory Many foot races for people of all ages and sizes followed and a great mnny prizes were awarded Severnl good horse races also took place I While riding horse race Tom Jones horse flew the track and struck a telephone post throwing Mr Jones against it in way that hurt him The Board Has Had a Busy Session and Finished with but Few Changes The board of equalization met last Monday for the purpose of listening to complaints of those whose taxes had been raised at the former meeting nnd they finished up without getting murdered although it looked for a day or two as though the whole bunch was doomed for the woods were full of wild eyed tax payers swearing gance But alter taiKingtne matter over with the board most of them concluded that they had not been hurt in fact some of them secretly knew they were not high enough and went away satisfied Consequently very few changes were made The following was written by one of the angry tax payers and as it just about expresses his views which makes it amusing we give it space It was written at Solomon ville and signed by Zeke HEAR YEl HEAR YEl GREAT MEN OF GRAHAM COUNTY Know ye by these presents and the evidence to follow that your troubles are at an end Your cries of distress by reason of excessive taxation have reached the ears and touched the hearts of the county fathers and your prayers will speedilv be answered The liberality of the county dads in supplying the various goat and cattle owners with additional herds free of charge except the taxes on them is fully known throughout the ranks of cattle and goat men in the county The petitions importunities prayers and entreaties of the many who called on the board praying that their heards be cut down to something like their normal size were unavailing the board claiming to have acted on the old adage To whom little is given much shall be added But it remained for Hyrum Claridge to touch the right spot when he called on the board and asked that the taxes at least be re mitted on 150 head of old toothless goats claiming they were not worth 150 per head and a member of the board thereupon offering 150 per head for said toothless goats The offer was accepted instanter and the deal closed The Board of Supervisors having invested in the coat business no further annoyance need be feared in the future by the goat men of the county That industry will receive special protection from now henceforth In the future the boartl will be governed by the adage To whom little is givenlittle will be expected where goat men are concerned Some of you cattle men Erected that Will Be a Credit to tjie Company and the Town ACCIDENTLY SHOT SOMESENSIBLEVIEWS SOME PLAIN FAGTS The State Fair Commission Encouraging Holding of County Fairs The secretary of the State Fair Commission has sent to the Board of Supervisors and the County Fair Commissioners the following letter The late legislature in a bill on county government authorized the Board of Supervisors to set aside 50 for every million dollars of as sessed valuation in the county not to exceed fifteen for county and stateSffirpurposes This authorization Wns given in order that Boards of Supervisors might encourage local or county fairs and make an exhibit of the countys resources at the state fair Professor A McOmie of the State University put ina considerable part of his last summer vacation in organizing local fairs in various departments of the State With the cordial co operation of the Board of Supervisors and with proper encouragement and financial support much can be done this year toward the development of the various business interests of the State The State Fair is interested in tliis matter because it is the object and purpose of the State Fair to aid in developing the various resources of the State by making a great an nual exhibit of some of the same and encouraging every hamlet and county in the State to greater ef fort The State Fair is not only a great educational institution a great busi ness enterprise advertising and dis playing the immense resources of the State but it is also the harvest festival social coming together of the people of the state Rapid transportation quick and frequent communication and constant mingling of man with man is the great unifying force of the nation Local and county fairs play their part Local industry is aroused exhibits are collected and a portion of said collection at least finds its way to the State Fair Prize winners in a county contest generally wish for greater victories and send their exhibits to the state fair to compete in the larger contests where a blue ribbon is a certificate of highest merit in the state County Supervisors can encourage their own people in the following ways 1 By giving financial aid to local and county fairs 2 By giving financial assistance to every county Fair Commissioner in the collecting of exhibits for the State Fair 3 By offering special prizes at the State Fair to those from their county who compete and win at the State Fair The state fair gives purses for thorough bred and harness horses restricting competition in certain classes to Arizona horses Counties could give additional purses or prizes upon the condition that the winner comes from their county The Fair Commission has offered for several years a handsome 300 loving cup to the county making the best agricultural exhibit at the State fair The county winning the cup twice keeps possession of the same Maricopa has won this cup once and Yavapai once There will be a great contest between the two counties this year It would be a fine thing if some other county would step in thisjyear and take the blue ribbon away from both of them We hope the Boards of Supervisors and the different fair commissioners from each of the fourteen counties of the state will carefully consider the suggestion in the above and spare no effort in making 1913 the banner year for Arizona 11 lt I 1 I 4 sJmW ft A NUMBER 21 I 1 A Buffer Between the Railways and the People in Leslies of it But our constitution forbids any railway or railway official to belong to the association or to contribute a cent to its treasury and we even avoid collaboration with railway officials in the framing of policies and the drafting of literature They do not know what we are going to do until we do it That is who we are a great industrial craft the organized friend of the railways but an independent and candid friend having more stake in results than any railway official A slump in railway resources makes 1pm more necessary than ever in his position while it may put out our furnace fires stop our dividends and force our men into idleness What are we trying to do We are trying to create a public appetite for facts We faVor government regulation of railroads--We want it to be intelligent and wise When railway questions are discussed from the standpoint of in dividual trade or sectional prejudice mistakes are apt to be made dam agi to those 10 make them and to all concerned The public believes many things that are not -so There are many important facts which the public doetVnot appreciate What we are trying to do is to en courage the habit of studying facts and the custom of acting in accord ance with facts We urge the rail ways to get first hand their information about traffic conditions and we urge shippers to get first hand their information about railway financial conditions From time to time we make contributions to the discussion nnd when we do we show where we obtained our material so that anyone may check us up We want to make the railroads and the railway supply industries a strong and steady factor for nation al prosperity We can do this if the beneficiaries and that is everybody will study the facts and act accordingly ond there is no immediate prospect that our efforts to create business by nourishing the mascles of the railways will provide a 1 oversupply of transportation facilities or otherwise endanger the nationnl welfare What we want 31 benefit everybody That is what we are trying to do to promote conciliation between the public and the railways so that the nation may have a strong progressive railway system adequate to handle the nations business without delays and losses nnd to provide continuous instead of precarious employment to the army of workmen who are led to depend upon itfor their livelihood How does this interest the reader of Leslies Because it has its roots in the conditions affecting national prosperity No man in this country who thinks it through but will see that a strong transportation system operating with the intelligent sympathy and co operation of the public is of direct cash benefit to him What do we want the reader soiall to do We want him to use his influence with his acquaintances and his fellow membeia in organiza tions in favor of omitting all utter ance on railwiy questions except such as is based on intelligent and adequate study by persons compe tent to deal with so complex a sub ject and free from prejudice and conclusions jumped at from half im men on their payrolls a3 the roads themselves about a million and three quarters Our men and their families numbering six or seven millions support the tradesmen in the towns where they live and hence the nations factories Together with the railroads themselves we form with the exception of culture the biggest single factor in the country for good business to everybody We are not railroad men Our name contains the word railwav because that expresses our common bond and because we thought if people did not like that name ifwas our job to help make them like it So we ran- it un to the mnsthpnd
