Gendron was taken to a women's shelter and turned the couple's) possessions over to the Parks Department for safekeeping, Lucena said.

The New York Daily News quoted Joseph Dempsey, manager of the Unicorn Tavern in the park siying Christen worked for him as a handyman in July and August, and the couple ate frequently at his cafe "They were always having problems," Dempsey was quoted saying. "It was our busy season and he was an excellent worker. "You asked him to do something and it got done. But he had trouble getting here on time and keeping clean." MOUNDSVILLE, W.Va. (AP) Knife-wielding prisoners seized 14 hostages yesterday, taking control of the maximum-security West Virginia Penitentiary.

State troopers in riot gear surrounded the overcrowded, 120-year-old prison as officials made plans to "take back the institution," Marshall County Sheriff Donald Bordenkircher said. About 100 troopers and prison guards, many carrying gas masks and riot batons, assembled about 9 p.m. at a museum across the street. There were no reports of injuries in the uprising which began at 5:30 p.m. The inmates called a television station and demanded a meeting with Gov.

Arch Moore and prison officials, said John Domenick of WTRF-TV in Wheeling. Moore will decide "at the appropriate time" whether he will meet with the prisoners, press secretary John Price said. Penitentiary official Jerri Clutter said state officials were unaware of any demands by the inmates. The riot began when convicts armed with "jailhouse weapons" such as handmade knives seized the unidentified hostages, the sheriff said. He said officials did not know what triggered the uprising.

"It could have been a combination of things," he said. Warden Jerry Hedrick said the prison's population was about 100 Ablett, Mabel Agulnik, Joe Baker, Alice May Beiner, Sam Bell, Eric Alan Blackwood, Russell R. Homeless couple lived in New York City cave NEW YORK (AP) A homeless couple lived in a cave-like outpost in a park for six months, leaving only when the man required medical care for a drug overdose, authorities said yesterday. The dwelling, carved into an isolated hillside at Fort Tryon Park in Upper Manhattan, was discovered Monday when Lucille Gendron, 34, called police from a nearby subway station, said police Sgt.

Robert Lu-cena. Gendron said William Christen, 30, had taken an overdose of epilepsy medicine and needed help. Christen was taken to Presbyterian Hospital, where he was in fair condition yesterday. The dwelling was about five metres in diameter and two metres high. It was furnished with a table and chairs, said Lucena.

The Parks Department quickly sealed the "cave," which apparently was built years ago as an outpost in the park, he said. It was built of concrete and brick, with a small opening for an entrance. The park is best known for the Cloisters museum, a medieval monastery brought from France and.
