Montreal, Tuesday, March 8, 1988 E-8 BEST AVAILARl COPY Vermont public TV fundraisers woo younger viewers' support TV RADIO Mike Boone Gore, Darlene Love, Brenda Lee and Carl Perkins; Rock and Roll: The Early Days (March 15 at midnight) with Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Fats Domino; The Compleat Beatles (March 16 at 11:30 p.m.) and a reunion concert by the Everly Brothers (March 18 at 11.30 p.m.) Curran thinks there is a chance that rock 'n roll nostalgia may be more than a fundraising gimmick. Citing the popularity of Austin City Limits and Lawrence Welk reruns, she says there is room on public television for music programs that lack mass-audience acceptability. PBS exists as an alternative to mainstream television and the mass-market imperatives that govern scheduling decisions at networks in the U.S. and Canada. So don't click away to another channel the moment the pledge-drive shills appear on Vermont ETV.

Try to remember that fundraising is a temporary aberration and try to imagine what television would be like if PBS didn't tion's auction raises 7 per cent and 1 per cent is derived from miscellaneous sales, while support from the state of Vermont (27 per cent) and the federal Corporation for Public Broadcasting (14 per cent) round out the funding. Channel 33 has been on the air since October 1967. The station was initially financed almost completely by the state of Vermont. Federal funding began in 1970, and Vermont ETV launched community fund drives five years later. The initial beg-a-thon raised about $20,000.

But fundraising has intensified and the proceeds have grown in the 1980s as PBS stations have seen state and federal public broadcasting appropriations frozen or slashed. Despite general awareness that the Reagan years have been tough for public television's government funding, there are still viewers who turn a deaf ear to PBS pleas for support Vermont ETV estimates that of nine households in which people watch Channel 33, one will respond to the station's fundraising efforts. "That's better than some of the They're at it again. The people at Vermont ETV have begun beating their drums, shaking their tambourines, rattling their tin cups and singing the praises of their own programs. On channel 33, March is coming in like a lion, throwing back its mane and roaring for money.

This is the best of times in American public television: Excellent programs every night It is the worst of times: The shows are constantly interrupted by pleas to support public broadcasting. It is pledge-drive time at the Public Broadcasting Service station in Burlington. Every day through March 20, "pledge breaks" will be telecast during PBS programs and viewers will be reminded again and again and again that their support is needed to keep public television alive in the U.S. No one likes pledge drives, the more so because they occur on stations that are delightfully free of commercial interruption for most of the year. But as bad as the pledge pitches are and their de- stations within the public television system," says Ann Curran of Vermont ETV, "but there's still room for growth." PBS has targeted young adults as a group overdue for a pledge-drive shakedown.

Vermont ETV will telecast several nostalgic rock 'n roll specials including tonight's Buddy Holly and the Crickets A Tribute (at 9:15) in an effort to break through to the audience that doesn't necessarily dig Great Performances. "If you look at the profile of an average PBS station member nationally, you find someone older than the average age of the population," says Vermont ETV's Curran. "That's partially because younger people raising families might not have a lot of money to give away, but it's also a reflection of the programming. "The average age of our viewer-ship is affected by kids who watch Sesame Street and young homeowners who like This Old House," Curran adds. "But the audience for current affairs and cultural programs is older." Results of a 1984 study bear out Curran's analysis.

Viewers aged 50 and older made up 55 per cent of the audience for Frontline, 44 per cent of the audience for Nova and 45 per cent of the viewers watching American Playhouse. In the case of each of the aforementioned shows, less than 33 per cent of the audience was in the 35 to 49 age group and less than 25 per cent were between the ages of 18 and 34. On the theory that older viewers who plan to contribute to public TV are doing so already, PBS is going after its last untapped market. So roll over Beethoven, and tell Tchaikovsky the news that the channel that brings us Live From the Met is going to boogie for dollars. Other pop music specials during the pledge drive include The Arlo Guthrie Show (March 14 at 11:35 p.m.) with Pete Seeger, Bonnie Raitt, David Bromberg and Jerry Jeff Walker; A Tribute to Ricky Nelson (March 15 at 8:30 p.m.); Shake, Rattle and Roll (March 15 at 9:35 p.m.), with Chubby Checker, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ben E.

King, the Coasters, the Drifters, Lesley gree of acceptability ranges from tasteful whimpering to strident Shiller-esque shrillness the begging is a necessary evil. Unlike Canada and Britain, civilized English-speaking countries where public broadcasting is well-established and its financing relatively secure, the U.S. offers minimal government support for PBS. American public television is paid for by the people who watch it. Channel 33 will raise $1.8 million U.S.

from viewers (half of them Canadian) during its current July-to-June fiscal year. These contributions account for the largest single chunk (45 per cent) of the station's annual budget. Corporate underwriting accounts for 6 per cent of the money Vermont ETV receives.
