By Emily Farlow efarlowajc.com Erlene Smith's inquisitive and intelligent mind served her well when she and her husband joined President Jimmy Carter and first lady Rosal-ynn Carter at the White House. P.R. "Bobby" Smith and Erlene Smith were in the cotton business, said their daughter Victoria Smith, and Carter, of course, was in the peanut business.

Bobby and Carter knew each other well before Carter became president and nominated Bobby as assistant secretary of agriculture in 1978. The Smiths moved to Washington, and Victoria says her mother worked closely with the first lady. "One big contribution she had was she did scrap-books for the (Carter) family, so she was privy to tons of pictures and information," said Victoria Smith. Services 11 AM June 22 at Maranatha Seventh Day Ad-ventist Church. Donald Trimble F.H. BRADY, John "Jack" John Jude Brady, who was always known as Jack, age 77, passed away on Friday, June 20, 2014, was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on November 12, 1936. He was the youngest of four boys born to William and Mary Brady in an Irish Catholic family. The Catholic Church was important to the Brady family, and Jack attended Catholic schools and acted as altar boy in his youth.

Just after graduation from high school, Jack contracted polio and was treated at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He spent a year in treatment, and he began his college studies at the university, commonly known as Pitt. He graduated in 1957. He married Lucy Wayne on July 19, 1958. Their first child, Diane, was born in May 1959, followed by Matthew in April 1960, Michael in June 1961, and Carol in November 1963.

Jack taught English, Latin and German in high schools in Pittsburgh, and as his family grew, he took on additional jobs to support them. In the late 1960s, he found a better-paying career at IBM, and from that time on he worked in information technology. Jack was a devoted husband and father. He coached his children's baseball teams and taught them to drive, but most of all he taught them his strong ethical and moral principles. He shared many good times with his family while camping or sailing in the family's sailboat.

He was fun to be around. Jack and Lucy also enjoyed good times with friends, sometimes playing cards or golfing. Jack also volunteered with the Sierra Club, taught catechism, sang in his church choir, served meals to the homeless, and worked at the polls, in addition to his regular job. Jack lived in Pittsburgh until after the age of 40 when he moved several times for job opportunities, finally moving to Georgia in 1990. He lived in Norcross for 16 years, and then retired in Suwanee.

However, he remained loyal to the hometown teams of his youth: the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates, and the Pitt Panthers. He was very intelligent, and he spent his retirement years reading all the books he didn't have time to read while he was working. He and Lucy also traveled in their retirement years, making trips to Ireland and Germany, as well as many cross-country trips to visit their children and grandchildren in the western U.S. Jack is survived by his wife Lucy, to whom he was married for nearly 56 years. He was preceded in death by his son Matthew, and is survived by 3 children and 4 grandchildren: Sarah, Nick Bailey and Luke.

Erlene Smith After they left Washington, Smith and her husband went to Thailand for three months, teaching people about agriculture.

"Then they came back, and they went to El Salvador and lived there during some pretty scary times a lot of unrest in the country," Victoria Smith said. "It was part of her desire to give back and use her talents." Smith and her husband traveled all over the country and the world, to places even their daughter, who worked for Delta Air Lines, hadn't been. Erlene Smith and Bobby Smith always came back to Winder though, and to the friends they had known for years. She "was so easy to be a friend to. She was dependable," said Betty Ann Russell, who had been friends with Smith since the early 1950s.

"She was just a sweet and thoughtful person." Russell said Smith was good at bridge, which the friends played often. Smith insisted she wasn't good at the game, but she was smart, and Russell said she had a knack for remembering all the right rules. Picking up new interests and talents was easy for Smith. After her husband died, Smith learned to play hand bells. "That was just part of her in-quisitiveness and continually learning new things and pushing herself," said Victoria Smith.

In addition to her daughter Victoria Smith, of Atlanta, Erlene Smith is survived by sons P.R. "Phil" Smith of Winder and Timothy Smith of Dacula, daughter Janet Smith Costello of Atlanta, and two grandchildren. cials hope that will translate into higher demand for the sleep units.
