We understand that Father Padilla intends going into fhe poultry and fish business on quite an extensive scale. We are toJd it is his intention to bring ducks and geese from New Mexico, and that he will stock his lake with some of the beBt fish to be obtained such as trout, cat and carp.

We understand that Tom Perez has lost three or four horses, Alejandro Pe-ralta, and another native resident of St. (Johns, whose name we could-not learn, one. The action of onr Board of Equalization in raising the assessment on all kinds of property, including patented mines, to their actual cash value, has attracted considerableattentiou throughout the Territory, and their example is being commended and followed by all the other Boards and the press generally.

Mohave County Miner. The other Boards and the press may follow and commend it, but in this county those who have had their assessments raised are "kicking like bay steers," while some few have the manliness and honesty lo acknowledge that the raise is just and right. a a The Board of Equalization were busy for two or three days, listening to parties who thought their assessments were high enough and should not be raised. Scarcely any of them, however, would state under oath that they had returned all their property to the Assessor. We understand that a great mam' of them are abusing the Board on account of the raise.

This is wrong. The Board were only performing their duty to their constituents, and instead of being censured, deserve the thanks of every tax-payer of the The only thing to be regretted is, that it was impossible for them to do the work more thoroughly for the want of time. We are satisfied that fully one-half of the tax-payers of the county could have been raised from $100 up and not have been taxed unjustly. A private letter from Globe written by J. H.

Benbrook, Deputy Sheriff, to C. P. Owens, Sheriff of this county, gives the folio ving account of the killing of one of the gang of mstlers located on Canyon Creek named Bagsley. Mr. Benbrook says: "I had occasion to interview Mr.

Instead of throwing up when I ordered him, he pulled and turned loose, the ball grazing my left thumb, but breaking no bones. I returned the fire and he died." This man Bagsley has done a little business in the horse stealing line in this county. Two years ago he was arrested by our present Sheriff, for mistaking a brand on a horse, and brought to St. Johns, but at that time it was next to impossible to convict a man charged with airy crime, and he was released.

MILLED, Prop. RODEO NOTICE. The Executive Committee of the Apache County Stock Association at its meeting held at Holbrook, on July 31st, arranged the rodeo aa follows: The work will begin at the Meadows on September 5th, and work substantially as it was last year, viz From Meadows over Wabash range to twenty-four ranch thence to Esquidilla mountains, Mangus Springs, Cow Springs and Coyote, and continue on to the CC range and thence down the Show Low. At the Meadows the work will be in charge of Mr. Henry Smith.

On tli3 Wabash range, Mr. Young Jenkins will be Captain. From the Twenty-four ranch to the range of Huning Cooley, Mr. Bob Thomas will be Captain. From thence and down the Show Low, Mr.

Juan Sepulveda, Captain. Going west from the Meadows along the Colorado river to Woodruff, Mr. Nat Greer will be Captain. From Woodruff on down the river, Mr. Ed.

Rogers will take charge. At Holbrook Mr. Rodgers will divide his part', sending an outfit up tho Puerco to, and beyond if neces sary, Bennett's ranch; thence swing round by Tanner Springs, working the Lereux wash, over the ranges, then down the Cottonwood to its mouth, join ing the other party at Clear Greek. The remainder of Mr. Roger's outfit will woik down the river to Clear Creek, where, after joining party No.

1 the en- tiro outfit will work back between the creeks to the Verde road, then east through the mountains, via Wilford, Phoenix Park and the Indian Tanks to Show Low. The Committee proposes to make this rodeo as thorough and careful as possible, and to that end the attention of the various Captains is called to these suggestions Work slowly and satisfy j'ourself and the men whose range you are on that you have seen all the stock on it. Thero is no need of rushing the work at all. Consult with the men who control the range over which you work, and work according to their desires and convenience as much as possible. Brand every calf you can, no matter to whonvit belongs.

This Association proposes to put a stop to mavericking" if it can be and the Committee believes that by branding every calf found, it will greatly decrease the number of mavericks, and thus lessen the temptation to steal. Keep a careful record of such brands, and in case yon find no owner to report them to, send the brand and tally in to the Secretary of the Association, and they will be advertised in the Herald. And finally set squarely down on horse racing and gambling. Bv order of the Executive Committee. B.
