She and her mother, Greta Ref ert who had run a "shabby chic antiques and folk art shop across the street called Patina's for several years started Chez Marie 's together last fall. But family illness called for a tweaking of the original plan, andby October, Gretahad turned it over to Fowler, who has run it by herself since then. With her striking looks and slight frame you might mistake the 19-year-oldnewlywedfora barista or an artist dropping off work. But as an enterprise of one Fowler jokes the main downside is being her only employee she's created Chez Marie's signature style.

By GEORGE CHIDI gchidiajc.com A "Chinese-themed" village proposed for the Peachtree Corners area may include a cultural center, museums and galleries, restaurants, theaters and offices along with 140 homes and a formal garden, the developers say in a new filing. Site plans for the 100 -acre Asian Village Atlanta at Jones Mill Road and Governors Lake Parkway were made public Wednesday after the developers sought review of the project this week by the Atlanta Regional Commission. The developers have said officials from Suzhou, China, had contributed $3 million in materials for a formal Chinese garden to be included in the project. Asian Village Atlanta is still rounding up financial backers said Suzy O'Neal, the project manager.

She said the developers would have preferred to wait before filing the request for ARC review because their plans may change "I think, at this point, the project is more conceptual than firm," she said. "We're rezoning the property but frankly, we're at a very early planning stage." The developers have requested that Gwinnett County rezone two parcels to build townhouses and a retail center on the site. The ARC determined the project would be large enough to merit re- expanding the business some or doing more schooling. Nothing's definite. Of concern at the moment is drawing more people to this stretch of Main Street and staying open later at night.

"It's really quite something for a young woman like her gional approval now, as well, she said. 'Neal said she expected to face regional planners eventually, but regional review may delay the project. The project was set to appear before county leaders for public hearings in August, according to the county's preliminary agenda. Winning Gwinnett County approval may not be simple, she said. Asian Village Atlanta's calls for Chinese-style architecture and construction materials, roof pitches and other elements could run afoul of county zoning requirements.

Approval may require the county to bend its rules and the architects to find creative solutions for architectural problems, O'Neal said. For example, plans for the project's planned garden include a traditional Chinese bridge, which might not be acceptable under Americans with Disabilities Act requirements, she said. Gwinnett's zoning rules are thorough "in an effort to ensure quality, and what we end up with is mediocrity," she said. "We're going to find a way to use authentic materials, or materials that look authentic." it is for some folks to get past her age. Last year, she says, just after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, she set up a donation drop at Chez Marie's to raise money for pets displaced by the storm, many of which were diverted to Atlanta.

She was taking a cigarette break in front of the store when a passer-by stopped to ask her about it. "I was telling her about raising the money and she asked me how old I was," Fowler says. "At the time, I was 18. And she looked at me and said, 'Honey, you've got the rest of your damn life to save the world why do you have to do it "That's the kind of thing I get all the time." to run a business like that," says Margret von Keiser, a Dahlonega painter who owns the building at 13 Main St. and rents space to Fowler and seven other small businesses.

One of the first wave to set up studios on Buford's main drag decades ago, von Keiser remembers Fowler at 12, helping out at her mom's store. "It's amazing how laid-back she is," she adds. "When I was that age, I was nervous and tense and unsure about things." Fowler is anything but. Her mother, a self-employed artist and event coordinator, credits years of volunteering and home schooling for her daughter's skill level and confidence. Beth Green, who runs Tresor Unique a few doors down Main Street, says she's impressed with her fellow merchant's sophistication.

The Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce couldn't confirm that Fowler is the youngest business owner in the county. But since taking over Chez Marie's, she notices how hard PAID ADVERTISEMENT Business Review Reader Ads In This Section Prepared By Contract Advertising, he. 2006 AU Rights Reserved.
