Watkins West End Chapel. 770.909.8800. SHEFFIELD, John John Walter Sheffield, Jr. passed away peacefully ion August 25, 2015 surrounded by his loving family. He was born August 7, 1929 on a peanut farm in Colquitt, GA, the son of John Walter Sheffield, Sr.

and Cora Houston Sheffield. He attended Miller County High School and North Georgia College before accepting an appointment to the United States Naval Academy where he earned a degree in Engineering in 1951. He served his country as an officer in the United States Navy from 1951-1956 with two years on a destroyer and three years in the Submarine Service. Walter then attended the School of Dentistry at Emory University and the School of Orthodontics at the University of Pennsylvania. For over thirty years he practiced orthodontics in Atlanta.

He was active in his profession, serving as President of the Georgia Orthodontic Society, and President of the Southern Society of Orthodontists. He lectured extensively in Georgia and throughout the country on clinical issues and practice management. Later in his career he was an Associate Professor of Orthodontics at Emory University. Walter was also active in his community with years of volunteer service at the Baptist Children's Home in Waynesville, NC, The Ben Massel Dental Clinic in Atlanta and was a member of the Buckhead Ki-wanis Club. He was married for 45 years to his best friend Jane Searcy Sheffield.

They enjoyed a good life of travel, golf and spending time between the farm in Colquitt, Lake Toxaway, NC and Atlanta. In addition to his wife he is survived by his children, John Keaton Sheffield, John Walter Sheffield, III, Susan Searcy Sheffield and cherished grandson, Walter Murray Sheffield. He was a kind, sweet father and a brother to three siblings he adored: Rachel Bickley Speicher, Dorothy Sheffield Sammon and Sam Scott Sheffield. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Salvation Army, Peachtree Road United Methodist Church and Lake Toxaway United Methodist Church. Known as Jeanette, she was also Mom, JJ, and Bon-Bon to her immediate family. She lived a full life as a caring wife, mother, sister, friend, and teacher. She was gentle, loving, genuinely sweet, and encouraging to everyone around her. Born in Atlanta on January 26, 1934, Jeanette lived in Atlanta her entire life. After graduating from North Fulton High school, she received her BA in Education from the University of Georgia and taught elementary school until her marriage to James Polk McLain in 1957.

In addition to raising four boys, she enjoyed charity work, traveling, wildflowers and spending time with friends and family at her mountain cabin. She was a life-long member of Peachtree Presbyterian Church. Jeanette is preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Lenoir and Jean Reed Lewis; her husband of 51 years, James Polk McLain; and her sister, Nancy Lewis Montet. She is survived by her sons: Tom (Cathy) of Atlanta; Pete (LeVan) of Charlotte, NC; Rod (Shana) of Franklin, TN; and Keith of Roswell, GA. She is also survived by her twelve grandchildren: Catherine (Ryan) Nash, Abby, and Liza; Grace, Isabel, Amani, William, and Habtamu; Anna, Payton, Mia, and Micah; her loving sister, Grace Lewis Humphreys, and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at Saturday, August 29th at H. M. Phil was born in Macon, Georgia. He was a 1959 graduate of Lanier Senior High in Macon and graduated from Georgia Tech in 1965 with a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering. He had a rewarding 40-year career at the Georgia Power Company before retiring in 2000. He enjoyed photography, reading, woodworking, and collecting 1950s-1960s rock and roll music. Phil traveled extensively and went on several long-distance bicycling trips.

He had a lifelong love of golf both as a decent player and later as a close follower of the sport. He even traveled to Scotland in 1999 and played several of the old courses in the British Open rotation. Phil was a charter member of the Northlake Rotary Club, founded in 1974, and remained an active member, having served as president, historian, and, for several terms, as secretary. He met his wife Kathleen (Taffy) Mitchell in a typical Georgia Tech-Agnes Scott fashion in 1965, and they were married in 1966. They enjoyed many travels together and tried to keep local restaurants in business by eating out frequently.

He was very proud of his daughters, both of whom are Georgia Tech graduates. Phil was predeceased by his parents, Philip M. McLaughlin, Sr. and Catherine Beggs McLaughlin, both from Savannah, GA. Survivors include his wife, daughters Laurie E.

McLaughlin of Atlanta and Jennifer M. Robertson of Decatur, son-in-law Eric Robertson, grandchildren Rebecca, Owen, and Leah Robertson, brother David S. McLaughlin of Murfreesboro, TN, nephew Colin McLaughlin of TN, niece Laura Carver of TN, and several cousins. Visitation will be from 2-4 Thursday, August 27 at A.S. Turner Sons in Decatur.

Ms. Hawkins was a lifelong civil servant having worked in municipal, state and federal employment during her career. Nancy graduated from her beloved Spelman College in 1963.

While at Spelman, she became involved in the Civil Right Movement and helped to establish the campus Young Adult Chapter of the NAACP. Between undergraduate and graduate school, Nancy served her country as a civil servant in Viet Nam. In 1969, she earned a Master's Degree in Education from Central State University in Wilberforce, OH and married her husband of 36 years, the late James McArthur Hawkins. Nancy began working for the U. S.

Department of Labor as a federal representative in 1972. Over the next 36 years, she progressed to increasingly higher levels of management in the Atlanta Regional Office retiring in 2006 as Regional Director of the Office of Adult Education and Discretionary Programs. Rick was the former President of R.F. Vincent Corporation and worked in the Loss Prevention and Safety Field for several decades. He is survived by his wife, Marcia Vincent of 28 years and his brother Ray Vincent. Rick was the adored uncle of eight nieces and nephews and seven grand-nieces and grand-nephews. He was born on July 30, 1921 in Hunts-ville, Alabama to the late Walter R. Winnette and Ola Mae Craft Winnette. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty J. Gardenier Winnette in 1989 and two brothers; Walter M. Winnette and twin brother Charles R.

Winnette. He graduated from Georgia Tech with a degree in electrical engineering and served in the Navy until 1946. He was employed by Allis Chalmers for 25 years working in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Chattanooga, and Birmingham. In 1971, He became Co-Owner of Tri-State Utility Products, Inc. of Atlanta.

The Company expanded to offices in Birmingham, Alabama, and Tallahassee, and Florida. James retired as president of Tri-State in the year 2000. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and after retirement especially enjoyed travel and playing golf. Survivors include his son, James W. Winnette (Loretta) and two grandchildren, Melissa and Christopher.

Johnston (Lt. Retired U. S. Army) age 83 of Dunwoody died August 22, 2015. A native of Atlanta, he grew up in the Kirkwood area and attended Mur phy High School.

He entered the Army at an early age and retired as a Lt. Col. after 21 years of service. During his military career he served in the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War in the Corps of Engineers. He earned his education in undergraduate studies at the University of Maryland and received his MBA at Boston University.

After retirement, he was employed with the Department of Defense. His hobbies and passions included Georgia Tech Football, tennis, travel and history, especially of WWII.
