1 C-2 The GAZETTE, Montreal, Wednesday, November 24, 1982 Unknown George Wendt superb in minor 'Cheers' role Radio Mike Boone 'i The Ford campaign is particularly ironic and, I suspect, effective because it is running against a current crop of spots which emphasize the speed, power and sex appeal of some of the sportier Japanese compacts. DIAL Spinning: The Nature of Things begins a two-part special on Japan's post-war advances in science and technology tonight at 8 on CBMT-6 Richard Burton guest stars as himself tonight on of all things The Fall Guy (CFCF-12 at 9). Only on television do you get a world-renowned Shakespearian actor playing a supporting role behind Lee Majors. In the first of CBS's new series of Wednesday night movies, John Rit-ter heads the cast of In Love With an Older Woman (WCAX-3 at 9) A couple of sports specials on tomorrow night's schedule: Cable TV's community channel 9 will carry live coverage of the Schenley Awards ceremony from Toronto, beginning at and at 8, CBMT-6 will air The Best Downhill Racer, a 6C-minute documentary on Steve Podborski. on TV is the series of spots Jackie Stewart is doing for Ford.

If you've seen a lot of ads for American cars and who hasn't? you know they have tended to emphasize all the glamorous (and thoroughly useless) aspects of the products. We've had jungle cats leaping through the night air to land on vinyl roofs, leggy blondes emerging from the passenger side of sleek gas-guzzlers, leather-gloved hands furiously manipulating stick shifts, turbo-charged monster cars roaring around curves to capture the imagination of teenagers of all ages you know the routine sex and style hyped to the exclusion of substance. The new Ford spots are different. If you can comprehend Stewart's thick Scottish burr, you hear the authoritative former world driving champion talking about aerodynamics, road-holding ability and other safety and fuel economy related aspects of the Ford compact line. Solid consumer information in ads for American cars? Who would have thunk it? he looks, moves and speaks like a classic regular.

The beginning of each Cheers episode includes Norm's grand entrance. He comes bouncing through the door with the typical gusto of a white collar employee (Norm is an accountant) who has spent the day looking forward to his post-work cold one. Beer belly straining to escape the confines of his suit, he then makes a bee-line toward the bar as everyone in the place staff and patrons shouts "Norm!" in unison. It is at this point in the show that viewers must listen very carefully to hear Wendt casually spout some of the program's funniest throw-away lines. My three favorites to date are: Norm's first words as he comes through the door: "Gentlemen, start your tabs." In reply to a shouted "How's life, Norm?" "Not for the squeamish." In reply to "How ya doin', Norm?" "Daddy's rich and momma's good lookin'.

These cracks may not read like knee-slappers but Wendt's delivery and the sheer enthusiasm he brings Te the distinguished list of television comedy's unsung heroes, add the name George Wendt, an unknown actor who is turning his minor Cheers role into one of the most entertaining aspects of the show. While the Alan Aldas and Carroll O'Connors grab the media spotlight and big bucks in situation comedy, programs such as MASH and All in the Family succeed not only as vehicles for stars but also as premier examples of ensemble acting, with uniformly superb performances and the type of writing which spreads the gags and one-liners around among the foot soldiers. Cheers (WPTZ-5, tomorrow night at 9) has yet to produce a star of Alda O'Connor magnitude; but George Wendt is right up there with Rob Reiner, Gary Burghoff and the best of sit-com supporting actors. Wendt plays Norm (no last name that I've been able to catch) the most faithful customer in the Boston neighborhood bar which serves as the setting of Cheers. Anyone familiar with the bar scene will recognize the Norm stereotype.

He is the classic "regular" i the steady imbiber who is the backbone of a saloon's clientele. Closely duplicating real-life treatment of bar regulars, Norm's drink is poured and placed on the bar as he walks through the front door to assume the seat he will occupy from Happy Hour through to closing time, all the while checking his watch and saying: "What the heck, just one more quick one and then I've really gotta fly." With the exception of one great episode in which he organized a company toga party (at which he was the only one to show up in a toga), Norm's Cheers role has been confined to sitting at the bar, knocking back beer and dropping the occasional one-liner or wry observation. What's great about Wendt is that RICHARD BURTON Second fiddle to Lee Majors to the role of a bar hound make Norm one of the classic characters in the best new comedy of the season. One of the best and most surprising ad campaigns currently YEELEWQS0XI "0 CHANNELS LISTED Cinema Telephone rouge. (1963) Rock Hudson, Rod Taylor.
