WEEKLY JOURNAL-MINER WEDNESDAY MORNING, NOVEMBER 18, 1914. rlVE DEPUTY RECORDER KILLED IN ACCIDENT (From Sunday's Daily) One of the most appalling and heart-rending accidents which has cv-nr nrrnrrrrl in this county, if not in Arizona, and one which shocked the people of this city perhaps as no other tragic happening has ever shocked it before, was that which occurred at the Larry Little ranch, ten miles in the country yesterday afternoon about four o'clock, when W. T. King, chief deputy county recorder under L. S.

Colwcll. met instant death from the accidental discharge of a hammcrlcss shotgun in his own hands. And the feature of the accident which multiplies its horrors and fairly melts the hearts of those who contemplate it, is the fact that it occurred in the midst of a happy moment of life and while the unfortunate victim was seated beside his wife and daughter in an automobile after some hours on a hunting trip on one of the most beautiful days nature ever brought forth for the comfort and happiness of mankind. Mr. King, wife and daughter Mary- aged 16, had accompanied Mr.

and Mrs. M. B. Hazcltinc and family on a hunting trip to the Larry Little ranch, ten miles in the country tlip nartv lcavinsr Prcscott after noon yesterday in the Hazcltinc car. They had killed nothing and were preparing to leave the ranch on the return trip home.

As they com menced to scat themselves in the car Mr. Hazcltinc suggested that tliev remove the load from the shotgun which Mr. King had car ricd with him. Mr. King said, "no' I will carry the gun loaded wc may sec a rabbit or quail on the road." He was seated on the left side of the rear scat of the car when he made the remark, his wifi and daughter by his side.

To make room for one of Mr. Hazcltinc; boys he said, "I will set the gun over here," and lifted it up with his left hand, placing the butt some what abruptly down on the outside step of the car. The shock dis charged the gun and the full charge of heavy bird shot struck him below the left car, tearing the left side of his head practically from bis body laying bare the base of his brain He died so instantly that he stil sat in the scat by his wife, holding the guir in his hand, with a death grip until the members of the party released his cold and fast stiffening lingers from the barrel. It seemed momentarily impossibl for those present to realize tha: such a horrible tragedy had hap pened, and when it was realized human tongue can depict the con stcrnation and horror which over whelmed them. Mrs.

King became so prostrated with grief that it was almost impossible for her to con trol herself and the daughter all but collapsed, while Mr. and Mrs. Hazcl tinc seemed converted into a vcrit able to trance 'of grief. Dr. Southworth and Dr.

Yount were called and as soon as they ar rived pronounced the unfortunat man dead. The body followed by the sad-hearted family and friends was brought to Prcscott and taken to the Ruffncr undertaking cstal: lishmcut, Judge McLanc, acting as coroner, being summoned to hold an inquest, which was done in the evening, the verdict being that de ceased came to his death as ti' result of an accidental gunshot wound from a shotgun in his ow hands. Was Old-Time Citizen. Mr. King came to Prcscott som fifteen years ago from Merced, Cali fornia.

He came from California for his health and since living the salubrious climate of Prcscott had entirely regained it, being th picture of robust manhood for th past number of years. He went to California from in which state he had spent most of his life being about forty-two years old. Mrs. King's home before bccoiuiii the wife of Mr. King was Vandal Missouri, where she was married to the one whose life was so sudden ly ended yesterday.

Two daught crs, Mary and Wilhclmina, were born to the union, the former of whom was with her parents when the ac cidciit occurred, the latter being in the California University at Bcrkc Icy. When the family located here Mr. King became a mail carrier. Later he entered the employ of I. Gardner as chief clerk in the lat tcr general merchandise store When L.

S. Colwcll was elected county recorder he c.iose Mr Km, as his chief deputy a position ich i was a member in gooa sianuing oi Aztlan Lodge Xo. 1, F. and A. and of the other two local lodges of Masons.

In all his life, as known in Prcscott, he was the soul of honor, being an active member of the Prcscott Congregational church and a singer in the choir of this de nomination. His Last Solo. Only Friday previous to the day when he was so unexpectedly called into the great beyond, he attended social meeting of the Christian Endeavor Society of his church, and during the entertainment given there sang two solos to the edification of his fellow church workers. Those who saw Wm on this occasion say that he was in a par ticularly joyful and happy mood and took part in all the services with a seemingly unusual vim and interest. He was one of the best known men in the county, becoming so his capacity as deputy recorder.

And there was no man about the Yava pai county court house more ac commodating and congenial, main taining an even- temperament even under the greatest stress of business. The Kings' home was one of the most cozy and pleasant in Prcscott. 126 North. Pleasant street. Dr.

Southworth who has lived across the street from the family ever since thev have occupied the home. said, when talking about the trag cdy last night, that no man in all his acquaintance was more worthy the name of a true man in every respect than W. T. King. "He was always interested in work which rc- loundcd to the benefit of his fel low man, and the uplift of the com munity," he said, adding: "He was a Uicsicmciu, wncn came 10 manners and a Gladstone in home logic and practices.

Even if he disliked you he would treat you politely and gentlemanly, always prac ticing, as nearly as possible with erring humanity, the principles of the golden rule in his everyday life." At a late hour last night no arrangements had been made, and it is not known whether the remains will be interred in the Prcs cott cemetery or shipped to the old family home in Missouri. It is probable that the local Masonic will officiate at the funeral.
