In the role of Fox McCloud, gamers purge the galaxy of evil forces over a variety of missions. Battles take place on foot, in tanks or — best of all — in the cockpit of a heavily equipped spacecraft. Dedicated gamers could finish the 10 single-player missions in a weekend, but multiplayer mode can keep the action going. Shadow of Rome Company: Capcom Platform: PlayStation 2 Price: $49.99 I n“Shadow of Rome” the developer combines two styles of game play — slow and sneaky infiltration and bloody arena combat. The different components add variety to the game, but the direct, weapon-based action is the most successful. Parents take note: Fighting in the colos- seum is fun, but very gruesome and violent. Graphics and cut scenes are top-notch and pure eye candy. The dialogue, however, is awkward and far below the caliber of the visual presentation. “Shadow of Rome” isn’t quite asgood as other Capcom action games like “Devil May Cry” or “Onimusha,” but it’s worth renting. SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE WarioWare: Touched Company: Nintendo Platform: Nintendo DS Price: $39.99 O ne of Nintendo’s better games in 2004 was “WarioWare Inc.” This collection of silly but addictive minigames made the GameBoy Advance title a hit. With Nintendo’s new touch-screen handheld system, Nintendo DS, Wario adds a new twist to the formula. Like the original game, “WarioWare: Touched” dishes out more than 180 wacky activities. Only this time the touch screen plays a big part in the fun. Tasks require gamers to pop balloons, move snowballs and even flatten mountains with the touch of the stylus. “WarioWare: Touched” seems bizarre at first, but it grows on you. Winning Eleven 8 Company: Konami Platforms: PlayStation 2, Xbox Price: $49.99 T his is easily the best soccer simulation game available. “Winning Eleven 8” doesn’t have many officially licensed stadiums and teams, but the game play is fine-tuned to the point of perfection. The tight control, available maneuvers, realistic physics and remarkable A.I. more than make up for the shortcomings in the game. Add a deep training and career mode, multiplayer support and polished presentation, and you’ve got one heck of a soccer game. Let’s hope for online play in the next installment.
