Douglas does not get Guynup. Ho wants to ba a Demon and with tho Demons stand, a cap on his head and a swatstick in his hand, but his wish is not to bo granted.

Douglas wants h'm and Douglas want Is not to bo filled, for Vic Walling has turned down the arrangements which Captain Dugau of tho Qulen Sabes made with tho Douglas Don, and has said "Nay, nay, Daniel, I may not caro to use him myself, but I sure am not going to help make those De mons of yours any stronger than they now are. Its bench warming for Guynup." This Is the unpleasant news of the day for the Dugan first tried to make a deal with tho Don for a trade. Harper for Guynup. Tho Douglas wlscono could not soe this and asked for another offer, for a pitcher, for instance. Dugan rcpl'cd that they were long on chuckers In Cananea and suggested a dinero salve.

Tho Don agreed and waited a reply, only to learn last night that Walling would not grant the re-1 lease. Douglas Is disappointed, but will manage to get along nicely, thank you. Guynup could be used, but Is not indlspcnslblo and tho lineup for the three games In EI Paso For- Ward, SmUh and W'al tors, tho latter on third, with Mat- Jthewson, Harper and Carlson for the outfield. Carlson fairly scintilates as an outer garden star. For two hours yesterday he ran from fence to baseline and baseline to fence, gobbling flics, and in all that two hours never missed a one.

Ho snapped 'em back to the plate In fine shape too. Those who saw his work declared It Ideal. Tho umpire question has been bothering some, but It seems to bo settled. Ne'ther El Paso nor Douglas wanted Goyhenlx to officiate and O'Donovan states that ho received word last night that Ed Mackcy was to accompany the Demons to El Paso and boss the three games. This suits both clubs.

A surprise came from Bisbee In tho shape of two telegrams, ono to O'Donovan and another to Harry Kane. The ono to the Don asked for terms for a purchase by BIsbeo of Harry Kane. and the one to Kane asked if he wrmld come It his purchase could be arranged. Both were- answered in the negative. And the fans aro wondering.

Bisbee has always had a hammer out for Kane and for them to tacitly adm't that bo is tho pitcher Douglas knows him to be was pleasing to local fans. Today O'Donovan said that he had no more jntenUon of releasing Kane to Bisbee lnan of disbanding. He has made good here, and has his friends and Heve he will be better this year than last. Kane said today. Th'3 Is the only cRy in this section I will play in, BIsbeo could not Induce mo to leave.

I camo to Douglas and was well received. I have been well pleased with my stay here, have made friends who have been very kind to me. I want to stay richt hero In Douglas ml I pitcn or not. inus iar LONG AND SRORT GLAOSE IS ADOPTED EACH FACTION IN SENATE THINKS IT IS WINNING AS RESULT OF VOTE. i WASHINGTON, D.

Slay 13. By a sudden welding late today of supposedly irreconcilable factions, the senate by a vote of 56 to 10, adopted tho compromise amendment to the railroad bill for the regulation of relative charges for long and short hauls. Agreement was reached chiefly each faction apparently thought It was getting the better of a shrewd-i driven bargain. Some senators tonight suggest that the supreme court r. ay have to arbitrate the question as to which faction's judgment is correct.

Before adjournment Senator Bacon sought to show that Senator Aldrlch, leader of tbe forces In charge of the bill, had voted for revision different from that which ho had advocated during the long debate on this question. Senator Bailey remarked that Bacon was mistaken and was quoting from his (Bailey's) remarks. "I hope the Senator from Texas will not interfere," said Aldrlch, laughingly, -The senator Is try'ng to justify bis action of voUng with "That Is the time I usually justify my vote," retorted Bacon. May 12. Mrs. Cortoro, who lived for twenty-six years in Easton, returned to New York yesterday from Italy on the liner San Georgio, and becauso she did not speak a single word of English her statement about her residence in this country was doubted and sho was nearly deported. Her parrot, that had journeyed with her from country to Italy, did speak Engl'sh. It saved the day and she was admitted.

Mrs. Cortorio went through th6 long line of Ellis Island, and an tin migration Inspector had Just decided to sn(j hcr to a of specat lnauiry wflen a volco saIa. "Oh, shut up. She's all right." "Who spoke there?" asked the inspector. "Let her go.

Let her go. She's all very good colloqual English. It was right," came the voice again. Then It was found that the woman bad a parrot-with her that spoke shown that the woman was very much attached to the bird, and it was evident that it had been In En countries. It was rumored about the streets last n'ght that Clarence Marshall had been summoned back to Vernon by that club which has farmed him to Bisbee. This Is impossible to verify.
