"The bar association, which is comprised of a majority of practicing attorneys in our judicial district, feels like judicial elections are critical to the system of justice we have locally. Taylor and Rodney Scott are vying for the Circuit Court judgeship.

Taylor received the most support from the bar association survey in the Circuit Court race. Out of 71 attorneys who responded to the Smyrna city judge survey, 35 highly recommended Thompson, 28 recommended Thompson, two did not recommend Thompson and six had no opinion. The same survey noted three highly recommended Coats, three recommended Coats, 56 did not recommend Coats and nine had no opinion. A member of Crowell's Chapel Lutheran Church and a former employee of Uniroyal, he was also a retired employee of Samsonite Co. Visitation was held from 5-9 p.m.

A member of the Grace Baptist Church and a native of Bedford County, she was also a member of the College Grove Home Demonstration Club, and the Murfreesboro Senior Citizens. He is survived by a sister, Jacque Parkinson of a brother, James Creech of Murfreesboro; a niece; and three nephews. Educated at Abilene Christian University and the University of Tennessee, he was a social worker at Vanderbilt Medical Center and had taught in the Social Work Department at David Lipscomb University. He had served in the Tennessee Air National Guard and was a member of the Watertown Church of Christ.

Cannon County Commission candidates are, by district: 1) Mark Coats was appointed as the Smyrna city judge by the City Commission in 1993 when the position was created. He was elected to the post in 1994.

The Smyrna city judge also acts as a General Sessions judge. This year's election will make the Smyrna city judgeship an eight-year term.
