A dog owes its life to the good heartedness of Dr. O. L. Ma- honey, yesterday morning arriving in town he saw the dog catcher chasing a handsome Spitz dog. Some one remarked that that dog's days were numbered.

Mr. Mahoney remarked that so far as the dog catcher was concerned the animal would live to a green old age. While the dog catcher was pursuing the Spitz the doctor bought a collar and going to the office of the collector he secured a tag. As he was leav ing the city hall the dog catcher approached with his captive. The doc tor stopped him and showing him his credentials he decorated the animal with the lifesaving collar and tag.

In the afternoon a test was made of the direct pressure of the water system without the engine.

A. DIEHL Shoe Co. WIDELY DIFFERENT VIEWS. Mrs. Fiske who appeared here in Kosmersholm Saturday night, present ed the play in Los Angeles Monday night.

The theatrical writers on the three morning papers take widely different views In many respects, as much so as if they had intended to contradict each other. While the Times man calls It not a gloomy play, really might be called cheerful. Law rence of the Herald wrote that the audience was so affected by the drama's gloom that applause early became an expression of habit rather than appreciation. Stevens of the Examiner doesn't like an Ibsen diet. adding that a continuous Ibsen would give one a hobnailed brain.

The lat ter does not think Fiske a great ac tress though 4 great artist. All agree on the fascination of her performance. The Times Bpeaks of her singularly bad enunciation while the Herald, man says she has overcome what he had noticed before, an anoying lncoherency of utterance, though she picked up her cues too quickly. The company Is commended for the ensemble of good actors, the share of praise being dis tributed according to the writers pe culiar liking. The Times' article Is mostly an excellent literary analysis of the play, one of the best written.

The Examiner man ventures not over fifty per cent understood what the company was driving at. yet claims a wonderful beauty, an abundance of theatrical art for Mrs. Fiske. Doubt less these differing views will be good for the box office for every one will want to go and decide for himself. GONE TO COLORADO SPRINGS.

St IM I 1 1 111 11 1 1 1 1 1 1111 1 1 AN OHIO VISITOR A VALLEY BOOSTER W. H. Beardsley Here Fer a Few Days, Hia First Visit in Five Years. W. H.

Beardsley of Hamilton, Ohio, arrived here yesterday morning and will be' a Phoenix visitor for several days. He is stopping at the Hotel Ad ams. Mr. Hamilton has quite large property interests in the valley and was in former days a frequent visitor having many friends and acquaintances here. This, however, is his first visit for five years and he notes a very decided change In the appearance of Phoenix, a change that is of course, for the better Mr.

Beardsley was one of the prin cipal promoters of what the older resi dents are familiar with as the Agua Fria reservoir and irrigation project, Its purpose being the reclamation of a large area of desert land in the Agua Fria valley northwest of Phoenix, by means of storage and diversion works at and near Frog "Tanks. The diversion dam was about 80 per cent completed when the company's affairs be1 came embarrassed and the project was abandoned for tho time. Mr. Beardsley was asked if his visit was In connection with this enterprise and said it was though only in an incidental way. He has nothing to say concerning it at this time, further than that he always has had and still has an abiding faith in the merit of as well as considerable capital tied up in it.

His only business in connection with it just now fcr to investigate conditions and learn directly what the situation is. Mr. Beardsley is, however, an ar dent supporter of the reclamation idea and believes that In the generations to come there will be a marvelous development in the west through the use of stored water. Speaking of 1 his.

val ley particularly, he says he has al ways had faith in its future and has been one of its most enthusiastic missionaries. Years ago he predicted that It would some day be the most Intense ly cultivated valley in the whole United States. That time, is arriving very rapidly although he says the present prosperity is only a foretaste of the future. Phoenix, expects, will be- come a city of considerable size in the near future and the valley will be -thickly settled with small farm houses and happy families.
