Express condolences at ajc.comobits HOLTZMAN, Rose ROSE HOLTZMAN Aunt Rose, as she was affectionately known by the sorority sisters during her fifteen years (1980-1995) as housemother at the Delta Phi Epsilon sorority at the University of Florida was an incredible role model for all who knew her. She always put the needs of "the girls" in her sorority above her own. For her commitment she was awarded the Delta Phi Epsilon International Housemother of the Year Award. During her time in Gainesville, Florida, the campus was experiencing an increase in the number of sexual assaults of students. Always vigilant about the safety of "her Aunt Rose strongly encouraged the City of Gainesville Police department to greatly increase lighting on and around the campus.

For her untiring efforts she was awarded the City of Gainesville Police Department's first PUBLIC CITIZENS AWARD given to a citizen who promotes safety and security in the City of Gainesville. Born in South Fallsburg, New York, December 24th, 1912, she attended New Paltz State Teachers college and taught for several years before becoming the girl "Monday-Sunday" in the medical office of her husband, Samuel G. Holtzman, a general practitioner in the town of less then 500 residents. She loved being a part of the "Borscht Belt" culture and proudly shared the stories of life in the Catskills with listeners, young and old. She was a founding member of the Fallsburg Chapter of Hadassah and a member of the Fallsburg Chapter of B'nai Brith.

Following her retirement at age 85 she moved to Atlanta to be closer to her family. Still extremely vibrant and active she responded to the request to work as the full-time receptionist in the offices of Mature Mart, a company started by her granddaughter Alexis Abramson. When she was not working her life was consumed with reading. Her interests were broad, but her main passion was politics and the state of the world. Her petite stature and stylish appearance belied a fierce political analyst who bombarded the past 12 presidents and untold local politicians with letters of protest, praise, encouragement and, of course, some of Roses sage advice, she was a proud American but one who didn't hesitate to make her views clear.

Mimi, Aunt Rose, Mommy and wife, Rose Holtzman is survived by daughters Phyllis Abramson and Jane Weinstein, son-in-laws Norman Abramson and Melvin Weinstein, grandchildren Peter Abramson, (Cara Abramson), Alexis Abramson, Jeffrey Berk-man (Wendi Berkman), Lauren Berkman Merritt) and great grandchildren, Max and Micah Abramson. Rose Holtzman was central to the lives of many friends and her family. She shared a wisdom and optimism that we would never have envisioned on our own. We are ever thankful for the life she chose to share with us. At her request a private service was held to honor the extraordinary life of Rose Holtzman who exhibited great courage during her life and left this world, January 5th, 2006, without fear.
