PHOENIX SEPT. 24, 1907. THE CATERER AND THE COCKTAILS. There can be no possible doubt that Bishop Berry's statement regarding the cocktails at the Fairbanks dinner was made honestly. That it was made on Information and belief, and not from personal observation, is certain for Bishop Berry did not attend the function and could have had no direct knowledge of the particulars and preliminaries of the episode.

The bishop's version of the incident, manifestly obtained from some person or persons in whose veracity and trust worthiness he placed implicit confidence, was to the following effect: That Vice President Fairbanks did not order the cocktails and did not know they were on the table: that President Roosevelt "likes a drink now and then." and personally sent word to the caterer to serve the cocktails. This, while It exonerates Mr. Fairbanks, places Mr. Roosevelt in a queer light and an embarrassing position. As was pointed out in a Washington dispatch the other day, it was impossible for the president or the vice president sustaining the relation of host and guest, to discuss the matter publicly or to confirm or deny any report reflecting on one or the other.

But the affair has been so magnified out of proportion to its importance, and has been made a subject of so much eager and greedy sensationalism, that Secretary Loeb. goaded by bad gering of correspondents, exclalmo. a wpek ago: "Can you imagine either th? I president or myself going to a dinner as the guest of anyone and looking about and saying: 'Is there anything to drink here?" Later he said: "The statement is too absurd to be given credence. Neither the president nor his secretary, either directly or Indirectly, ever ordered anything of any kind at the luncheon or at any other luncheon that they attended." This has at least the merit of probability. The very rudiments of good breeding are sufficient to prevent invited guests from dictating as to the eatables or drinkables which their hosts shall serve; and, as Secretary Loeb says, it is absurd to suppose that the president would so far forget the commonest rules of propriety as to give the order which has been attributed to him.

The most plausible explanation of.the incident is found in the following sentence In Bishop Berry's statement: "The arrangements were entirely in the hands of the caterer." It is quite probable that thU "lets out everybody." RE FI EK'SOF PURE GOLD. The Globe Miner, union labor and socialistic has been repudiated by the Globe miners' union. The Globe Miner was too zealous in the cause and too loudly proclaimed, America for Americans or rather for the English speaking people The paper which purported to be the organ of the element by which it has been repudiated urged the expulsion of foreigners, that is, the south of Europe foreigners from the camp. Messrs. Semple and Hlckey could not have gone to a more unfavorable camp for the promulgation of such a doctrine of elimination, for Globe abounds in south of Europe laborers.

Repudiating resolutions were adopted by the union denouncing the paper as a tool of capitalists and which according to the resolutions is working in a very mysterious way Its wonders to perform. The resolutions lament the overrunning of they are here and unionized they must enjoy all the privileges which unionism confers. In the work of Messrs. Semple and Hit-key is seen a purpose to drive the foreigners out of the camp and out of the union rendering them easy prey for the "unfair" capitalists of the Warren and other districts. This action leaves these two.

distinguished agitators without any congenial occupation in this section of the vineyard. This is the first time that the pure quality of their socialism or unionism has ever been brought Into question. They were among the most rabid of the rabid. X. G. Douglas. who is associated with W. A.

Bondu-rant in his placer mining project on Humbug Creek is In the city, having brought down with him a little placer gold for a neighbor operating with a dry washer on adjoining property. Mr. Douglas says his company is progressing nicely in the construction of the flume which is to bring water for gold washing purposes to their ground and they extiect to have the water running by December 1st. He Is very hopeful and well satisfied with prospects. WHEELER HEARD FROM.

Captain Harry Wheeler of the Rangers, yesterday wired Governor Klbbey from Benson, en route from Tucson to his headquarters in Nam, concerning the ncent expedition in the Pnpago country. He said they captured John Johns, the murderer and another murderer, which was the first information i the governor's office had that a sec- ond murderer was at large in that sec- tion. It is reported from other sources that the other man is named "Titanlo" and that he is supposed to have been an accomplice of John Johns in hl'j killing of the Mexican. A PHOENIX ROMANCE.
