The Pirates have notable victories against Winthrop, Boston University and George Washington. ACCBIG TEN CHALLENGE Newsservices Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon refuses to let speculation about Rich Rodriguez's future change his timetable to evaluate the football coach. "Everyone needs to take a deep breath," Brandon said Monday.

The first-year AD reiterated that he won't do performance reviews of any of his coaches until their seasons not just the regular season are over. Rodriguez helped the Wolverines qualify for a bowl possibly the Insight Bowl on Dec. 28 -for the first time in his three seasons in charge of college football's winningest program. The situation swirling around Rodriguez's status might turn into a circus at the team's banquet Thursday night because Stanford coach Jim Har-baugh plans to be there to be honored along with his 1985 teammates. Har-baugh said there's a "75-percent chance" he will be at the event.

"That'll be awkward," former Michigan star and ESPN analyst Desmond Howard said. Michigan's 7-5 regular season ended Saturday with a 37-7 loss at Ohio State. Rodriguez lost a school-record nine games in his debut with the Wolverines two years ago and was 5-7 last season. He has three years remaining on his six-year contract that pays about $2.5 million per season. Brandon said earlier this month that the NCAA violations committed under Rodriguez didn't give him cause to terminate his contract.

If Rodriguez is fired without cause before 2011, it would cost $4 mil- Tech continued from CI to sit down with him this past offseason. Jarrett Jack, the standout point guard on Georgia Tech's Final Four team in 2004, invited Shumpert to visit the video room one day when he was shooting baskets at Tech's Zelnak Center. Jack, who recently was traded from the Toronto Raptors to the New Orleans Hornets, makes his offseason home in Atlanta. He wanted to see if Shumpert would watch a play or two. They ended up studying the better part of Shumpert's play in games against Maryland and N.C.

State in the ACC tournament last season. "I don't think it's good to just tell somebody what they should be doing, "Jack said. "I wanted to know what he was thinking in the same process. I think he has a tremendous amount of talent and, with the right direction, he could be a special player." So what happens when two talented Georgia Tech point guards sit down and watch video together with no coaches in the room, just two players talking to each other? The conversation centered on decision-making. There was one play in particular that stuck out in Shumpert's mind, which Jack had broken down.

Shumpert had scored on a layup the previous trip down the court. This time he pulled up for a 3-pointer from 35 feet, way outside. He clanked it. Not many people might know what possessed him to shoot that shot, but Jack could recognize it, explain it and address it. It had to do with ego, and Jack got that.

"He knows I can make that shot," Shumpert recalled. "But he was like, 'You shot that shot strictly because you felt disrespected that he backed Instead of staying out on Shumpert, the defender moved behind a ball screen, not worried about whether Shumpert would pull up for the jump shot. Jack made two points about that play: First, why not take the layup if that's what the defense had just given you? "He was just explaining to me until they stop the drive, why are you shooting the 35?" Shumpert said. know you can shoot it, you know you can shoot it, but un- JSKB, Minnesota's Trevor Mbakwe and Virginia's Mike Scott go for a rebound during the Cavaliers' victory over the previously Unbeaten Gophers. Tom Olmscheid Associated Press Farrakhan, Cavs rally past Gophers Yellow Jackets guard Iman Shumpert has a 2.5 assist-to-turnover ratio through six games this season.

John Bazemore Associated Press til somebody can stop you from doing all that you can do, you don't have to shoot His second point was this: If Shumpert was going to shoot a 3-pointer, step into it, and don't back into it. "It's got to be stepped aggressively, I'm ready to shoot this shot, I'm in range, in rhythm, got to knock the shot Shumpert said. Jack recognizes Shumpert's natural gifts, such as his athleticism, but said if he adds good decisionmaking to his game, that's when he'll take off. Shumpert not only could make better decisions that would cut down on his own turnovers, but also the team's, Jack pointed out. It's part of the point guard's job to get his teammates out of trouble.

"Even if he wasn't the one turning the ball over, he could keep his group under better control," Jack said. Shumpert has experienced the fruits of better decision-making this season. He comes off a game against Syracuse in which he had eight assists and only two turnovers. Granted, he didn't shoot the ball as early or as often as Tech coach Paul Hewitt wanted. Yet unlike last season, when he compounded bad offensive nights with bouts of turnovers, he played a decent floor game.

Last year he had more turnovers than assists in 11 of 30 games. So far he's had more turnovers than assists in only one of the first six games, with Kennesaw State the exception. His assist-to-turnover ratio has improved from 1.30 his sophomore year to 2.50 through Tech's first six games as a junior, and at least some of it goes back to that conversation with Jack. Shumpert still hears some of the thoughts in his head. "It's just nice hearing it from a different voice," Shumpert said.

"Not like I'm not listening to Coach Hewitt, but it's just when you constantly hear from one person, and you hear it from a different voice, a voice that's not coaching you, it's just a little different." hern. Trevor Mbakwe had 18 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks for Minnesota (6-1). But the Gophers scored just two points during a seven-minute span in the second half and couldn't complete a furious rally in the final 5 minutes.

Mbakwe's putback cut Virginia's lead to 73-67 with 2 minutes to play, but Scott responded with a three-point play to put the game out of reach.
