Tho supreme court decided that where an oath is required by the United Stat 68 t.tas, that oath can be administered only by an officer of the United Statej. Hence, a notary public, not being a st.ite officer, cannot administer oatb.3 to United Stales oilioial-jj except the statutes es-pecialiy provides thorefor. This opinion, it is believed, seriously affects the status of more than a hundred thousand cases in the niinmal division of the general land offices.
