ClKC-awtiC, Montreal, Tuesday, September 15, 1987 B-7 real plays liosf id The Host i nii UUAL OR MAI By BRUCE BAILEY 1 Gazette Film Critic Walking into St. Martin's Church in lower Westmount recently was like stumbling into somebody else's dream. The air was thick with mist sliced by beams of laser-sharp white light; parishioners in their Sunday best sat bolt-upright and stone-still in the front rows. But there was nobody reciting pious wisdom from the pulpit. This Mass was being said by people hiding behind cameras and mumbling into walkie-talkies; where the altar boys should have been, men wrestled with python-sized electrical wiring.

But this was no dream of some very, very polite, English-speaking girl from Green Ave. Seven-week shoot What we had here was the communion scene from The Host a Canadian-American "supernatural thriller" at the beginning of a seven-week shoot in and around Montreal. 4 Finney Actors Albert Finney and from Toronto's Festival of cameras. GESSER ENTERPRISES PRESENT MAUREEN KJKKfcbltK the least The girl from Tomszowaubelski happened to be in Paris when martial law was declared in Poland in 1982, effectively short-circuiting what was becoming a promising career for her at home. "It bothered me for about an hour," she recalls. Didn't seem to get to her either when her passport and papers were stolen in New York leaving her stranded at a time when the Polish government had more pressing things to do than replace expatriates' papers.

Scouting locations She got the role in Gorky Park by what some would call good luck: Director Michael Apted happened to hear of her from friends when he was scouting around for locations and actors in Paris. But as far as Pacula is concerned, success was pretty much something bound to happen if you work at it. When she dreamed of becoming an actress in the economically depressed Poland of her childhood, it never occurred to her that she wouldn't make it "My family thought of it as just my fantasy, but I think if you're young and strong you can do anything," she says. She's working with a director who also knows what it's like to hoe a tough row in the weed patch of life. Densham left school at 15 in his native England.

He came to Canada on his own at 19 and he soon got into selling short TV fillers on just about everything from sailing to flowers opening up to the strains of the 1812 Overture. His films (made with partner John Watson) have won over 80 international awards. The duo were also up for Oscars for their work on Life Times Nine and Don't Mess With Bill (an inspiring $5,000 film about an 83-year-old man who invented "De-fend-o," the martial art for people who hate martial arts). Densham says that from those experiences, he's learned to tell his stories with pictures and sounds. When there is dialogue, he pares it to its bare essentials.

Aunt Felice, it seems, is possessed by evil spirits from Darkest Africa! That's not to say, however, that The Host is one big voodoo-rama. "It's somewhere between The Exorcist and Poltergeist," explains 0-scar-nominated Canadian director Pen Densham over a plate of basse cuisine in the church basement.

"It's not the sort of film I'd like to see billed as just a horror movie. "Like Poltergeist, it's about commitment how it brings together people and gives them strength. You've got a father who loves his daughter enough to risk his own life. And a daughter that doesn't want him to take the chance." The role of Felice is being handled by Joanna Pacula, the hypnotic-eyed Polish beauty who played the love interest for William Hurt and Lee Marvin in Gorky Park. Felice was possessed by the evil spirit when she was just a child, but now threatens to pass it on to her 866-3836 896 St.

Pacula, 28, took on her role in the proceedings because she saw it as a first chance to play a "negative character." But the challenge turned out to be more complicated than that "Felice is more of a victim," she explains. "She must seem nice on the surface, but in the end, she will be doing things that we will be working out when we get to that point" Whatever the difficulties might be, they're unlikely to faze Pacula in 12Z9 Blvd SI -LAURENT 861-3151 EROTIC FILM PLACE DU CANADA DENNIS QUAID ELLEN BARKIN A Fiimbvj I W.ifvf mm Life PLACE DU iiSS.
