Here's another example of why: While they wait for their trains, riders of the Paris Metro are now being "entertained" by government-funded culture videos on special TV monitors. A programming sample: Mona Lisa's smile, bicycles, split-second images of flying machines, military tanks, and so on are all part of a video about Leonardo da Vinci. There's music, too. And there are various other tapes, on Jean Cocteau, Marcel Proust and so on.

Each one lasts three to six minutes. How horrifying! Imagine shuffling down a subway hole one morning, half-awake and hung over, and being assaulted by Jean Cocteau. And of course, these things have a captive audience. In Paris, everybody with any money instantly buys a car and goes out and gets into a traffic jam, so this subway-video business victimizes those least able to defend themselves. And get this the nitwit cabinet minister behind this scheme is now investigating the prospects for selling advertising time.

Comic Jonathan Winters will publish his first novel next winter, illustrated with his own sketches. The story, if that's the word, is something about a one-armed transsexual who dates his own grandfather something like that, I'm not sure. I'm not sure I want to be sure. Lawmakers in action: The state senate of Oklahoma has de- -signated "port silt loam," from selected western Oklahoma counties, as the official state soil. State Senator Ray Giles introduced the motion, and senators voted for it, 38-8.

(This guy Giles has a future. Maybe he could run for vice-president or something. Remember that name.) Oh, shut up: Comedian Eddie Murphy. claims that he would "love to make love to Whoopie Goldberg on screen." Willie Nelson's daughter has written a book about him. Heart Worn Memories is evidently affectionate but candid, a pair of attributes I would have thought were mutually exclusive.

Susie Nelson tells, for example, about how Willie informed her that he was divorcing her mother while father and daughter were sharing a "joint" of marijuana. There's also, I guess, a lot of interesting stuff about the country music business. Coming soon to a bookstore near you. Crime news: In Frankfurt, in West Germany, police reported catching a 19-year-old burglar the easy way. The kid had just broken into a community centre, through a window, when the cops came by.

Thinking the men in blue were his sidekicks (who had actually lit out for tall timber), the thief began handing stuff out the window, complete with a play-byplay: "Give me the crow bar here, take this cassette player," etc. etc. He's in custody. -iiiniiaS- "WAXED CONTAINS TUATDONTOPSN MH14WS BLOWNG OF PAWNS-CUSTOMER? Antoine St. Montreal H2Y 3R7. Mom finds hugging makes love grow CHILD SEARCH Antihistamines are meant for treatment of allergies HEALTH Ann Landers rA DR. HOWARD 't. SEIDEN Dear Ann: Your advice to the frustrated mother of the 1 1-year-old daughter was fine, but you missed the real issue.

It's not Mom's authority or the daughter's behavior that caused the problem, it's the way they interact. I saw our family in that woman's letter. I loved my daughter, but I was beginning to dislike her intensely. I also had become highly critical of her and was habitually negative. I decided to try a one-month experiment.

During that time I would refrain from all negative comments. I would offer only compliments and praise and point out her good qualities. I forced myself to hug her at every opportunity. It wasn't easy. I was never a hugger.

At first she reacted stiffly, but by the end of the month a miracle had occurred. Our relationship had turned around completely. I liked her. We enjoyed each other. We listened and talked to one another.

She is almost 15 now and still sits on my lap and wants a hug. I never miss an opportunity to let her know I love her. If this worked for us, it can work for others. tubes tied because my husband says we can't support any more abnormal kids. The problem is that I am beginning to hate my friends who are able to have normal children.

When I see them enjoying their little ones I become resentful and nasty. I cannot understand why God saw fit to favor them and ignore me. I have always tried to be a good person. I need to find a reason to go on living. Can you help me? Feeling Blue Dear Blue: Life has dealt you some cruel and painful blows.

I can understand why you feel as you do. But we must accept that which we cannot change and not rail against it. To do otherwise is to invite misery. Have you seen a doctor about medication to help lift the depression? If not, I urge you to do so. I also hope you will get counselling.

Verbalizing your feelings will help you get rid of your anger and feelings of persecution. Hideous things can happen to kind and wonderful people. Life is unfair. Please write to me again and tell me that you are taking my advice. Good luck and God bless.

I've always said children will live up (or down) to your expectations. If you treat them as if they are lovable and honorable, they will break their necks to be just that. A kid who is told "You're no good" will fulfil the prophecy because he'll believe it. Love is the strongest force in the world, and it's one of the few things you can give away and still have more of than ever. Dear Ann: recently found out that all three of our babies were born mentally retarded and have Smlth-Lemei-Opitz syndrome.

Our oldest is 5 and I'm heartbroken. We had to put him in a group home. More than a year ago, I started having severe anxiety attacks and spent a week in hospital. on June 22 carrying a bag of groceries and walking home from Thomas's Country Store in front of Riverside Lanes in Ausable Forks, N.Y. It is believed that Kari Lynn is not a runaway and that her disappearance is the result of foul play. Kari is 16 years old, stand 5 feet 3 inches tall and weighs 106 lbs. She has blue eyes and when last seen had brown, shoulder-length hair. Kari was wearing maroon-colored sweat pants, flat white shoes, a yellow short-sleeved shirt with blue stripes on the sleeves and a jeans jacket.

Kari was also wearing two earrings in her left ear, four earrings in her right ear and a single turquoise ring on her left hand. They're available in so many shapes, sizes and formulations that it's unlikely that one or another hasn't passed through your lips at some point. Many cough and cold tablets and syrups contain antihistamines. So do the Triaminic Infant drops that so many mothers swear by and I swear at. You see, in their function as antihistamines, they shouldn't help relieve the symptoms of colds. Nope, antihistamines or more properly, Histamine-1 receptor blockers should be primarily used for the treatment of allergies.

And considering that many of you now have runny noses and eyes attributable to pollen and other allergy causing demons, what better time than now to run over the types of antihistamines available? Clip and save If, on the other hand, your symptoms don't begin until the end of August, meaning that ragweed's your foe, clip and save this for a future date. With few exceptions, antihistamines are non-prescription. But if you're inclined toward self-diagnosis and treatment, you'd best be certain that your runny red eyes aren't infected. The same holds true for your runny nose and scratchy throat. With infection, there's usually more discharge and it tends to be greenish-yellow.

Hives, which look like large welts on the skin, should prompt a medical visit. With wheezing or asthma, always call for a doctor's opinion since they'll require a more thorough assessment and prescription medication. Those of you allergic to Aunt Martha's cat or any other specific being or thing, will best profit from an antihistamine if it's taken hours before exposure. How many hours varies with the antihistamine chosen. Unfortunately, the dosing directions on the packages may not be all that accurate or helpful.

A drug's half -life is the amount of time it takes for half an administered dose of the drug in your body to be eliminated. In theory, to maintain a stable amount of drug in your blood, a drug need only be taken every half-life. Yet chlorpheniramine (Chlor Tripolon), an antihistamine with a half-life of some 20 to 30 hours in adults, is recommended to be taken three or four times a day. In theory, it need only be taken once or twice a day. So much for theory.

The oodles of antihistamines available fall into six major classes. Class 1 includes diphenhydramine (Benadryl), dimenhydrinate (Gravol) and clemastine (Tavist). They tend to have sedative side effects and may produce dry mouth and less commonly, blurred vision and difficulties urinating. They're not likely to cause nausea, vomiting or stomach upset. In fact, Gravol is usually used to prevent these common motion-sickness symptoms.

rv ANYTHING ISSUE. UP. Class 2 includes pyrilamine (found in Triaminic) and tripelenna-mine (Pyribenzamine). These are less sedative but tend to have more gut-associated side effects like nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, constipation or diarrhea. Class 3 includes chlorpheniramine (Chlor-Tripolon), brompheniramine (Dimetane) and triprolidine (Actidil).

These tend to be less sedative or produce rapid-onset, short-duration sedation. In some people they may cause stimulation and hyperactivity. Class 4 includes hydroxyzine (Atarax), cyclizine (Marzine) and meclizine (Antivert) and are said to be less sedative. Cyclizine and meclizine are often used to treat dizziness and motion sickness, although Gravol is probably more effective for the latter. Atarax has long-lasting effects and is favored for use in allergic conditions involving the skin, like hives.

It also makes a good tranquillizer and has very good anti-itch properties. Class 5 includes promethazine (Phenergan) and methdilazine (Dilo-syn), both of which are related to the so-called major tranquillizers used to treat serious psychiatric diseases. They tend to be very sedating, which is why some parents use Phenergan syrup as a sleeping potion for their infants. They shouldn't, of course. Phenergan may be applied to the skin in cream form.

Dilosyn has good anti-itch properties. Another drug, doxepin (Sine-quan), is marketed as a potent prescription antidepressant medication. It does, however, have potent antihistamine properties and is worth a try if all else has failed. Side effects may include sedation and dry mouth. Side effects Generalities aside, any of these drugs can have unpredictable side effects including: dizziness, ringing in the ears, fatigue, blurred vision, double vision, mental stimulation, euphoria, nervousness, insomnia, tremor, loss of appetite, increased appetite and weight gain, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, headache, dry mouth and throat, chest tightness, trouble passing urine, increased passage of urine, burning with passage of urine, tingling, heaviness and weakness of the hands.

And though they're used to treat allergies, you can develop an allergy to any of them. They should not be taken during pregnancy unless prescribed by a doctor. If taken regularly for long periods, routine blood tests should be done to ensure that they're not harming you. ronservATE $095 FRAME SPECIAL Two weeks only!
