CFJP officially goes on the air Sunday (Sept. 7) at 5:25 p.m. It will be an important moment in Canadian broadcasting history, one that no one should miss. You may have missed the magic moments of CBCs television debut in 1 952 or the 1961 launches of CTV and TVA. But here's your chance to.be present at the creation of Canada's newest television network.

Jean Pouliot, major shareholder of CFCF, Inc. and chief executive officer of Quatre Saisons, will launch the network with a short speech on Sunday afternoon. Here's how to tune in Pou-liot's oratory and Quatre Saisons's first day of broadcasting: If you are a cable subscriber, tune channel 5 the position assigned to CFJP by CF Cable TV and Videotron. If you don't subscribe to cable, you'll -need a UHF antenna to pick up the new channel at position 35. Some day, you'll tell your grandchildren you were tuned to Television Quatre Saisons the moment the network signed on.

You will be able to describe the excitement of sitting down on Sunday to tune a channel that wasn't there on Saturday. And it is exciting. The debut of Quatre Saisons (with CFJP-Montreal as its flagship station) will bring new faces to our TV screens. The network will entertain and inform us with fresh as Tele-Metropole's Montreal en direct. It is possible indeed, it is probable that the new network's current affairs and documentary programs won't rival those on Radio-Quebec, the provincial educational network.

Moreover, Quatre Saisons will inevitably experience growing pains. The faces we see on our screens this weekend and during the weeks to come might not be on the network a year or two from now. In short, Quatre Saisons will not take the Quebec broadcasting industry by storm. The new network faces tough competition from Radio-Canada and TVA, both of which have been around a long time and are attuned to the tastes of francophone TV viewers. But Quatre Saisons will make a substantial impact just by signing on Sunday afternoon.

The network is a reality. It is going on the air and it. will undoubtedly stay on the air as long as the air is carrying television signals. In addition to gaining another local TV alternative, Montreal viewers will benefit from enhanced competition. The existence of Quatre Saisons will keep Radio-Canada and Tele-Metro-pole on their toes, scrambling to maintain their market shares.

The scramble will inevitably lead to more innovative programming at the existing French networks. We're in for Canadian historical series good family entertainment Malcolm Stoddard (r) stars in The Campbells, a Canadian historical series returning to CTV on Sunday night. Page 12 Gandhi's the best bet for movie viewing this week VI Ben Kingsley (1) won an Oscar for his starring role in Gandhi, on television in two parts this week. Page 56 some exciting shows. While viewers are the big winners, the creation of a new network also benefits the province's creative community.

Quatre Saisons has hours of air time to fill and will look to Quebec's independent production industry for programs and program ideas. Quatre Saisons arrives this weekend. And television in Quebec is about and different program ideas. The impact of the new network may take a while to be felt. CFJP and the other Quatre Saisons affiliates across Quebec won't immediately blow the established competition out of the water.

Maybe drama on Quatre Saisons won't be as good as Radio-Canada's Le temps d'une paix. Perhaps its variety shows won't be as popular Restaurant Pages 4, 5.
