August 2, 1982. In remembrance of a husband and father. Beautiful memories of one gone lo rest New York Times CAPE TOWN South Africa's government has agreed to pay $875,000 to settle civil claims by 51 people who were wounded or whose relatives were killed in 1985 when police opened fire on a group of blacks going to a funeral. Twenty black people died in the massacre in Langa, a black township on the Eastern Cape. Largest of its kind Legal experts said the out-of-court settlement amounts to an admission of liability by the government that the shootings in Langa were unlawful.

Experts said it could pave the way for charges against the police. The settlement is the largest of its kind in South African legal history. Langa's tragedy proved to be a turning point in civil unrest that had swept black townships since October 1984. "I'm happy to be free I'm well," said Camila Michelsen Nino, 22, as she walked in front of television cameras, to the astonishment of broadcasters. Michelsen's release came 22 months after she was kidnapped by leftist M-19 guerrillas. She was freed late Thursday at the doorstep of a Bogota TV station. Her kidnappers gave her a designer sweater and an elegant black skirt so she could look better on her first day of freedom, she said. "Camila! Camila!" said a tearful Slii-viiliiiia Reuter The young woman, a student at the time of her kidnapping, said she never saw her captors' faces because they always wore masks.

She said she did not approve of her kidnapping, "but I think they are fighting for ideals, and that's what counts." Pilar de Lopez, the anchorwoman who was reading the news when Michelsen made her appearance, said she couldn't believe her luck.
