CONTRIBUTED The splendor, legacy and influence of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is the focal point of the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra's 2016-2017 Masterworks Series season finale centered on "Mozart's Requiem" Friday, June 2 and Saturday, June 3 at the Schuster Center. The composer's majestic and moving composition will also be closely examined in the DPO's Classical Connections Series season finale Sunday, June 4 also at the Schuster Center. Written in 1791, "Requiem" remains revered for its beauty, grandeur and scope but Mozart fell ill and died while composing it, leaving many sections of the work partially complete or essentially unfinished. However, Mozart's pupil Franz Sfissmayr ultimately completed the work in the stylistic vein of his mentor and with sufficient details and guidance from him, according to many classical scholars. The phenomenal piece will be bolstered by the DPO Chorus under the direction of Hank Dahlman and also feature guest soloists Andrea Chenoweth (soprano), Melisa Bonetti (mezzo-soprano), Daniel Weeks (tenor), and Justin Hopkins (bass-baritone).

In addition, the concert will notably open with Mozart's luminous 1777 Oboe Concerto which will be rendered by DPO principal oboist Eileen Whalen. "The Mozart Requiem has always occupied a special place in the repertoire because it's a wonderful piece (containing) beautiful, powerful music," said DPO Artistic Director and Conductor Neal Gittleman. "(There are) also bizarre historical circumstances surrounding it: a lucrative commission, 100 percent Mozart is left 100 percent intact, everything that's part Mozart-part Sfissmayr is open for gentle reinterpretation, and everything that's 100 percent Sfissmayr is totally up for grabs," Gittleman explained. "The result is a really fascinating post-modern rethinking of the piece. Sleeping Giant keeps faith with the masterpiece, but they recast it through a modern or post-modern prism.

The result is that we hear something familiar from a new and fresh perspective." Gittleman hopes audiences will be excited to hear two different versions of Mozart's final, glorious opus next weekend. He also looks forward to leading a casual following the Classical Connections concert which includes a post-show Graeter's Ice Cream Mozart's death before the piece was finished, and Mozart's widow hiring one of his friends to complete it so the final payment could be collected. "So, we're left with an incredible masterpiece that's about one quarter 100 percent authentic Mozart, about one half incomplete or sketched-out Mozart finished and filled out by Franz Sassmayr, and about one quarter 100 percent Sfissmayr. Given contemporary worship of I bet any other similarly mishmashed piece of music would long ago have dropped out of the repertoire. But even in its mish-mashed form, this is a magnificent work that has proven its worth." Gittleman is particularly thrilled about spotlighting "Requiem" in a completely new light in the Clas sical Connections concert showcasing Sleeping Giant, a group of six American composers who composed a "re-imagining" of Mozart's work.

Timo Andres, Christopher Cerrone, Jacob Cooper, Ted Hearne, Robert Honstein and Andrew Norman, all graduates of Yale University's School of Music, have drawn considerable acclaim for their innovative approaches which have been heard in numerous concert halls and clubs throughout the United States and Europe. The group's take on "Requiem" is by no means a total rewrite but rather an inspired arrangement beckoning a specific perspective as "an unsettling but reverential love song to the ritual of classical music." "In (Sleeping Giant's) reworking of the piece, everything that's Social. "It's my hope people will be sufficiently intrigued by the idea to come hear the piece twice, once on Friday or Saturday to hear the Mozart Requiem as we know and love it, then again on Sunday to hear this very cool re-interpretation of a masterpiece we know and love," Gittleman said. "Sunday's Classical Connections (concert particularly provides) explanation and exploration of what Sleeping Giant did, how they did it, and why. It's a great version skillfully and beautifully blending the old and the new.".
