But still, Carrier said, "I was able, in that very short moment, to learn about how my life began." By MARIAN SCOTT of The Gazette Natural mothers should stop barging into adopted children's lives, an group representing 900 adoptive parents told a hearing into Quebec's adoption law last night. "We must stop the destruction caused by biological mothers and social workers who are taking away the acquired rights of families," said Bernard Roy, director of the Quebec Association of Adoptive Parents. The situation is "urgent because of unjustifiable, dafly damage caused by certain Social Affairs workers who are interfering clumsily and inappropriately in families," the association claimed in a brief. Huguette an association member who asked that her last name not be published, said her adopted son's natural mother wrecked her family by contacting her son in January. "If I'd known 21 years ago that confidentiality would be broken, I wouldn't have adopted.

It's total destruction," she said. "We gave him everything she couldn't: Love, affection, an education. He has a fine future ahead of him. And then she shows up to traumatize him." Mrs. C.

claimed that a social worker acting as an intermediary for the natural mother insisted on meeting her son, then "brainwashed" him by telling him about his natural mother's unhappy youth. The association called for strict laws to stop social workers from contacting adopted children on behalf of natural mothers, and vice versa, without both parties' consent. Under a 1984 Quebec Court of Appeal ruling, natural parents and adopted children over 18 may recruit social workers to help them search for each other. Each year, Quebec social-service centres receive about 7,000 applications from adoptees and parents seeking information or a reunion. Later yesterday, 15 members of the Mouvement retrouvailles told how they had searched for natural parents or for children given up for adoption.

The movement has 7,000 members, 70 per cent of them searching for their natural mothers. ERSKINE, George. March 13, 1960. And Evelyn February 27, 1982. In loving memory of a dear mother and father.

Visitation Thursday, March 13, between 1-5 and 7-10 p.m. OTTAWA (CP) Costly awards in recent libel cases have not frightened the Canadian media or discouraged investigative reporting, the publisher of the The Gazette says. "Investigative journalism in both the narrow sense and the broader sense of the word is very much alive and well in Canada," Clark W. Davey told the Canadian Public Relations Society yesterday. Davey said the legal system offers the media "just about the right amount of protection," despite the fact libel law places the onus of proof on the defendant news outlet.

"The libel law in Canada, by in large, taken all around like a pumpkin, is very protective of the media," he said In an interview. Most Canadian libel awards range from $25,000 to $50,000 while in the United States they often reach and $500,000, he said. Toronto lawyer Stuart Robertson disagreed with Davey's assessment and said Canadian courts automatically assume the media is wrong and the plaintiff has suffered damages. "Some Jurisdictions in the world are called tax havens; we're sort of a libel haven because our law is so simple for plaintiffs," he said in a recent interview. The Charter of Rights may even-.

tually change the libel law and make it more difficult for plaintiffs to succeed, said Robertson, the author of' three books on media and the law. Davey said he hopes media free-, doms guaranteed In the charter will: serve as a useful weapon in other battles, such as the fight to have ar cess to all court proceedings. NUTLEY, Edward.
