Down the road apiece in Nome, Alaska Bubbie and Zadie are sorting thousands of letters from Jewish children. And while Santa is preparing for his annual Christmas chimney hop, Daniel Bloom of Nome is criss-crossing the country as the Hanukkah Mensch (man), inviting Jewish children to celebrate their eight-day Festival of Lights. Invisible munchkins Bubbie and Zadie are invisible, imaginary munchkins created two years ago by Bloom to provide Jewish children a Hanukkah alternative to Christmas traditions. Hanukkah also called the Festival of Lights commemorates the rededication of the Temple of the Maccabees after their victory over the Syrians more than 2,000 years ago. Each year it falls about the same time as the Christmas season.

The first candle of Hanukkah was lighted Wednesday night around the world. Jewish Santa Claus. He conceived his Hanukkah alternative from memories of his own childhood in Springfield, when "the whole world turned Christmas." He says his own family "had good, warm Hanukkah celebrations" and he is proud of his Jewish roots. "But families have become so separated. "Many children either don't have a grandmother and grandfather to confide in or they live too far away to far away to share in holiday traditions." Part of folklore Bloom envisions Bubbie and Zadie becoming part of American folklore.

But he wants them to be more than that. "They have a spiritual dimension and it is ecumenical. "Bubbie and Zadie are an alternative, not competition, to Christmas. I want them to give Jewish children a sense of pride and knowledge about their own roots, but also to educate non-Jews about Jews and their traditions." Letters may be sent to Bubbie and Zadie at: The Chanu-kah House, Box 84, Nome, Alaska, 99762. Bubbie and Zadie are Yiddish words for grandmother and grandfather.

Last year, more than 2,000 children wrote them from almost every state in the U.S. and from other countries, Bloom says. "Jewish kids often feel left out during the holiday season because of all the Christmas hype, and Bubbie and Zadie seem to be fulfilling an important need. "The kids believe they exist, judging from their letters, and they love the whole idea. "They write about their families, their schools and their hobbies." Until May, Bloom, 34, was a public information aide at the University of Alaska.

He quit to devote his time and his savings to getting ready for his Hanukkah project. It has tripled in volume this year and he answers all the mail Bubbie and Zadie receive: "I am Bubbie and Zadie's messenger." Dressed in a black suit and black hat that make him look like a Hasidic Charlie Chaplin, Bloom has appeared in several cities, where he is sometimes referred to as the The members of the above branch are requested to attend a funeral service for our late COMRADE W. Maggie Pennington said she "was out all day Tuesday looking for one and couldn't find one." "I called (J.C.) Penney's because I had heard they were taking a list," she said.

"But they said the list was too long, they were sold out and weren't taking any more names. "We were just about ready to tell Leana to put a hold on it and that we would do the best we could to get one after Christmas." Her husband decided to fly to London after seeing a television report that Londoners aren't afflicted by the craze. But salesmen at Harrods London's "top people's department store" said the dolls, which sell for $44.50 Canadian, have been selling like hot-cakes. "We sold more than 200 Wednesday and we've had to limit them to three to a customer," a Harrods official said. "We're being mobbed for them, but we haven't had any fighting yet" The official said at least a dozen Americans have made special trips for the hard-to-find, chubby-cheeked dolls.

SHAWNEE, Kan. (AP) A Kansas City mailman flew to London on a special Christmas mission yesterday. He had to find a Cabbage Patch doll for his five-year-old daughter. The scarce doll has triggered near-riots in stores across Canada and the United States. "My daughter Leana was almost in tears because we couldn't get one," said Edward Pennington, 44, after arriving at London's Heathrow airport.

"I heard there were some in London so I decided to jump on a plane, pick one up, go straight back to the airport and fly home again." Reporters from Britain's Daily Star newspaper met Pennington at the plane. They whisked him away for an exclusive interview as reporters from other papers chased after them. The Daily Star exchanged five Cabbage Patch dolls for the exclusive interview, but even it didn't have an easy time finding them. After scouring London with no success, the Star found them in Bristol, 160 kilometres to the west, and bought five for about $225 Canadian. Pennington's wife, Maggie, is a flight attendant for Trans World Airlines.

Trouble for Reagan is boiling up in middle, lower classes: Pollster ST.

LOUIS (UPI) Pollster Pat Cadell said yesterday hostility against the administration of Ronald Reagan is rumbling through middle- and lower-class Americans and will pose problems for the president in the 1984 elections. "I believe Reagan is very vulnerable," said Cadell. "There are so many people who are angry at the president." Cadell said Reagan appears to be doing better politically than he really is because his support comes from voters who earn $25,000 a year or more and who are college graduates. These supporters are more apparent to political observers and the media. "When you get below that, his support goes like this," said Cadell, making a plunging motion with his hand.

"Most of us are around those who support him, thus we miss those who feel hostility." Cadell, who heads Cambridge Survey Research, a pub McLEAN-READ Stuart and Linda are proud to announce the birth of their son, 8 11 brother to Chris, on November 28, 1983, at Toronto General Hospital. Cadell, who worked for the presidential campaigns of Jimmy Carter and George McGovern, said Reagan mistakenly may place his re-election hopes on the economic recovery.

"President Reagan would have us believe that the low inflation we are experiencing is a political plus," he said. "I would like to argue that is not so. "People didn't give him the blame for the recession and they're not giving him the credit for the recovery." In addition, Cadell said in good economic times, people tend to look further into the future when deciding on a president. "They begin to say, 'What's going to happen to my chil dren'," said Cadell, "and that's a very dangerous ground for Ronald Reagan and one advantageous for the Democrats." He said the "baby boom" voters are now coming into the mainstream of life "and their concerns about what the future will bring come into play." "Given his ideology and his place in life, this is not a man whose eyes are down the road," Cadell said of Reagan. He said such issues as the huge federal budget deficits are going to loom large in the 1984 elections.

"Our children's futures and their children's futures are being stolen before our eyes," said Cadell. "We will have lost the power to control our destiny and our children's destiny." However, Cadell warned the Democratic party that Reagan is "politically imposing." "What you're dealing with is a president whose ideas may be flawed, but who pushes those ideas with conviction," he said.
