Gazette News Services LONDON A young Australian woirian freed by the hijackers of a TWA jet described yesterday how the gunmen brutally assaulted an American serviceman before killing him, kicking him over and over until "they had broken all his ribs." Ruth Henderson, 16, said she was sitting next to the serviceman Friday night when the hijackers "dragged him out of his seat, tied his hands and then beat him up. "I watched as they kicked him in the head.

They kicked him in the face and knee caps and kept kicking him until they had broken all his ribs. "Then they tried to knock him out with the butt of a pistol they kept hitting him over the head but he was very strong and they couldn't knock him out. "Then they dumped him back in his seat next to me and left him for ages. I tried to nurse him but there wasn't a great deal I could do. Later they dragged him away and I believe shot him." Ruth her father and mother arrived in London last night from Paris.

They were released in Algiers Saturday with 49 other passengers by the hijackers of the Trans World Airlines Boeing 727. Ruth Henderson said the murdered American was a navy diver and not a mdrine, as has been reported. "They singled him out because he was American and a soldier," she said. "They knew who he was because he didn't have a normal passport. He had a special navy one." Body dumped After killing the American, the hijackers dumped his body on the tarmac at Beirut airport Friday night.

It was flown to Spain yesterday. He has not been identified. William Henderson, 53. described how the hijacking began. "The first we knew about it was 10 minutes out of Athens," he said.

"Two men jumped up, and ran along the gangway screaming, 'This is a It was a very quick operation. "Then in Beirut they brought in reinforcements eight men who were all heavily armed and efficient. Henderson said the hijackers were armed with automatic rifles, machine-guns, pistols and a sackful of grenades. "I think it might have been possible to storm the aircraft when there was only two of them but quite frankly I think that is impossible now," he said. When told that a special U.S.

force was reported on standby to storm the plane, he said: "Oh my God that's terrible. It won't work." Go to Tehran Henderson said the gunmen separated him from his wife, Rosemary, 48, who had a better rapport with them than he did. Rosemary Henderson said she overheard the hijackers talking about going on to Tehran. "I think that's what they would like to do. But it's very difficult to say what they want." She said the gunmen stole her ring.

The chief flight attendant said yesterday that passengers on the jetliner included four American marines, two of whom were "brutally beaten," and one of whom was shot dead. Uli Derickson of Newton, N.J., told reporters at a New York news conference that she believes the man who was murdered by the terrorists on the plane was a 30-year-old marine, based on her inspection of the passengers' travel documents. Her report contradicted Ruth Henderson's, who said the dead man was a member of a Navy diving team. Marine Corps spokesmen will neither confirm nor deny whether any marines were aboard the plane. Derickson described the initial takeover of the plane as "brutal" and said that the hijackers made their presence known by giving her "a karate chop" to her chest.

She said they held hand gre-, nades and were clenching the pins in their teeth. Beat up marines Derickson said the hijackers "brutally beat up" two of the men believed to be marines, and also an American construction worker working for the U.S. Navy in Greece, because the three were considered "American emissaries." She said, the hijackers severely beat a man Derickson said she believed was a marine named Robert Stetson, then shot him in the head and threw his body off the plane. "I don't know what provoked them," she said. The official TWA passenger list shows no passenger named Stetson.

The closest to that name is an M.R. Stethem of Virginia. According to TWA officials last night, Stethem is unaccounted for. She said that after the initial takeover, "we were treated well" by the hijackers. Derickson, who said she is German, told reporters that she served as the translator between two German-speaking hijackers and the crew members in the cockpit.

"I had established a good rapport with them," she said adding one of the hijackers "promised me over the lips of Allah that I would not be hurt." She also said Americans aboard the jet wanted to overpower their captors. She said urged them: "Please don't do anything in midair." She said a male passenger gave her a note, suggesting an attempt to retake the plane, and asked her to pass it to another passenger. "I told him please don't do anything in midair," she said. "When the plane is on the ground we may want to do this. Reuter, AP, Washington Post DEATHS WILKINSON, Maude (nee Henderson).

Jude for favour rendered. Rose. Transplants offer hope to diabetics BOSTON (AP) A surgeon who has performed experimental transplants in diabetics that have temporarily restored insulin production says he believes this approach will someday cure the disease. Researchers reported yesterday that they injected insulin-producing cells from dead people into the spleens of six diabetics. Three of them produced their own insulin for periods ranging from three weeks to three months.

While the new tissue did its job, these people were able to reduce their dependence on injected insulin by as much as 50 per cent to 90 per cent. But the transplants eventually stopped working. "This is a beginning," said Dr. David Scharp of Washington Univer-sity in St. Louis.

"Granted, it's not what people want to hear. They want to hear that everybody's been cured of their disease. I'm confident that with continued research, we can achieve that." Insulin is produced by specialized cells in the pancreas called the islets of Langerhans. Because of damage to these cells, about two million diabetics in North America don't produce enough insulin on their own, so they must receive injections. These shots keep people alive, but they do not provide sensitive enough control of blood sugar levels.

As a result, victims often suffer blindness, kidney failure and other side effects. The results of the Washington University transplants, which began last December, were reported at a meeting in Baltimore of the American Diabetes Association. Scharp described the experience so far as a "limited success." "This work is slow, and it's going to. take time," he said in an interview. The prisoners: Why Israel has so many other 1,200 to prisons inside Israel. The transfer of the prisoners was protested at the time by the International Red Cross as illegal, because the men were not prisoners of war, but Lebanese citizens accused of security violations by an occupying power. Israel said it was transferring them because it could not guarantee the safety of the camp as troops were withdrawing. Since May, Israel has been releasing these captured Shiites in small groups. On May 20, 271 Palestinians who had been among the 1,200 transferred to Israel were released as part of another prisoner exchange between Israel and the Palestinians in which Israel gave Up 1,150 Palestinians in return for three Israelis.

On April 2, however, as part of its withdrawal from southern Lebanon, Israel freed 600 Ansar prisoners and transferred the Turkey boosts police power ANKARA (Reuter) Turkey's parliament voted yesterday in favor of a controversial bill giving police wide new powers after an appeal by Prime Minister Turgut Ozal at the end of a six-day debate, the semi-official Anatolian news agency The news agency said the bill sets out new areas of responsibility for the police including morol behavior, control of entertainment, clubs and organizations and public health.
