83 The GAZETTE, Montreal, Saturday, July 5, 1930 HLM 'Moses' comes forth with lots of laughs i it FESTIVAL D'ETE DE IANAUD1ERE iff; Thus Moore was raised by the family of Senmet, idol makers since the Great Flood; and he became star-gazer to Phar-oah, who is also known as Richard Pryor, but spent his time looking at heavenly bodies of the nubile sort. But when Pharaoh's army was wasted, Pharaoh waxed roth which is a sign of anger. So began the wanderings of Herschel, which include a desert encounter with Dom deLuise, and though both men are dying of thirst, yea they agree they must meet for lunch. Then Herschel takes to wife the kooky Zerelda, also known as Laraine Newman, who has served the Lord not as handmaiden, but as Conehead on television's Saturday Night Live. And she is a pleasant foil, and gathers wool with the best of them.

And there came unto Herschel companions, among them a boozy angel, Paul Sand, who is more moulting than majestic. And also there came upon him the Prince of Darkness, Satan, who is John Ritter, who reveals unto Herschel that he was once nigh unto God, and that at Creation it was not God who made trees. Howsoever, whilst the supporting cast have moments of joy, it is Moore who is savior of the film. For the plot indeed is little more than skits, with punch lines that blare like off-key trombones, but Moore displays the sincerity that marks a prince of clowns, restraint that makes silliness as unto something special. And in Wholly Moses! remaineth silliness, slapstick and pleasant entertainment, and the greatest of these is vv WHOLLY MOSES! Claremont, Palace, Fairview Columbia Picturaa; produced by Froddi Fialda; (Hractad bf Gary written by Guy Thorn with Oudtay Moor, utrttm hawman, Jwnaa Coco, Oom DiwM, John Houumtn, Madalina Kihn, Richard Pryor, Paul r.d and John Rifter.

By DAVE CHENOWETH of The Garotte i Hear now of the gospel of Herschel, who once thought himself a prophet of God, but remaineth forever somewhat of a klutz. And that gospel is contained in the movie Wholly which is distinctly silly, but yet brings forth laughter. In the beginning there was Dudley Moore, the Briton, who was a very funny man and large of spirit though small in stature. And Hollywood reached out to him, saying: 'Come unto us, and unto the land of milk and honey-pies, and we shall make you a And they placed Dudley Moore in the comedy Foul Play, wherein he was a lonely and lascivious soul with a bedroom that would have made Sodom blush. And the audiences laughed with great glee, whereby Hollywood was pleased.

And Foul Play begat the comedy 10, wherein Moore was an aging musician chasing the fluff of youth. And though Bo Derek made the men to pant and groan, for her navel is sweet as the fig that grows in Galilee, it was the vulnerable Moore who brought the film to blossom. And the box office was golden, like unto a field of corn blessed by summer sun and rain, and it yielded big bucks. Then it came to pass that the studio 138C ANNEE MOZART Sunday. July 8 8 30 M.

Pharmacia Brunei Champoux; Berthiervilie. Ta-bagie Vanete. i Dudley Moore, as Herschel, turns silliness into lots of good fun In 'Wholly Mosesf moguls did talk amongst themselves, saying: 'Verily, Moore is a David to the Goliaths of the screen, so let us make haste to bring him again before his believers, for when an actor is hot, yea he is hot indeed, and this is no time for cool. And so it was done, and there is now delivered unto us Wholly and indeed it is but a bushel of corn destined for popping, a hasty thing that is but silliness and froth. Yet Moore is with us, and his face is straight even in the presence of jockey shorts that are a dozen cubits wide for what else would a giant wear, even one who is lover to Moore's flakey wife? and there is laughter in the audience, and good fun.

For this Moore is seen as Herschel, the son of a slave, Hyssop of the rolling jowls, who is known to us as James Coco, who himself has the face of a mournful squash. And Hyssop put his baby child in a basket of reeds, hoping that he would be taken by the Pharaoh's daughter, but the basket wa3 thrust away by a pushy Moses, who always knew a good thing when he saw It. Ex-TV 'brothers' give berth to those costly film blues dllscevery! Man and His World Come discover 27 pavilions, in which 15 different countries reveal their culture, their national essence, and their treasures. Man and His World's theme this summer is: Man and Nature. And it will be featured in a variety of presentations and dynamic cultural, artistic and scientific -happenings. Summer smiles on the the relaxing calm of the many green spaces, parks and opportunities for leisure at Man and His World. This summer, come enjoy your a shopping plaza; you also need more than chickenfeed to pay for even cameo appearances by such musical talents as James Brown, Cab Calloway, Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin.

But you don't need this much to buy what should be "cheap thrills." What happens here, and In the film business in general, is that major stars (particularly TV personalities) and a proposal replete with elements of proven saleability draw big investments and money is simply spent right up to or just beyond the available limits. This film doesn't really ask much by way of clever acting from Belushi and Aykroyd both of whom were generally funnier on television, for which your price of admission was merely putting-up with commercial intrusions. The two seem to have gone the way of such performers as Bob Newhart whose reputation suffered when too many media-chefs attempted to water-down the comic brew. And the plot here is merely an excuse to slam Big Names up on the Big Screen and enact enough big crashes to give some of us a big headache. It all begins when Jake Blues (Belushi) is released from prison and is taken by Elwood (Aykroyd) to the Chi THE BLUES BROTHERS At water, Oecarie Square Universal Studios production; directed by John Landis; screenplay by Dan Aykroyd and John Landis; starring John Belushi, John Aykroyd, James Brown, Cab Calloway, Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin.

By BRUCE BAILEY of The Gazette Elwood Blues mutters in a Joe Fri-dayish monotone delivered from beneath the rim of a black hat tilted over dark glasses: "We re on a mission from God," he explains. Maybe so. But the film itself based on the Blues Brothers characters created for the TV series Saturday Night Live is decidedly not the product of Divine inspiration. It has the stamp of Hollywood emblazoned all over it, as director-screenwriter John Landis (of Animal House), screenwriter-comedian Dan Aykroyd and performer John Belushi participate in the obscene squandering of almost $30 million on a film that might have been made much more simply and effectively. Among the main reasons for such a Jjigh tab are that it costs a lot to cover Sjumerous car and truck crashes, the demolition of considerable merchandise and many plate-glass windows in cago orphanage where they were raised.

It seems that Sister Mary Stigmata's orphanage must raise back taxes or else be liquidated (a rather peculiar premise when such church-affiliated, charitable institutions wouldn't normally face such government pressure). Be that as it may, the boys seek to raise money by getting together the members of their old band and the rest of the film simply catalogues the ways in which the group manages to provoke police, Nazis, country-western musicians, a bar-owner and his patrons; some feeble sort of glue is applied to all of this as a "mystery woman" makes repeated attempts to demolish the Blues Brothers throughout the film. By way of redeeming qualities, however, the film does have some pretty exciting musical numbers. Outstanding among these is Aretha Franklin's attempt (in a song called Think!) to dissuade her husband and a dishwasher from re-joining the band. Also impressive (albeit marred by its perpetuation of racial stereotypes) is a big production number at the Triple Rock Baptist Church where "Reverend" James Brown drives the congregation into a gospel-rock frenzy.

Suspicion falls everywhere including on Mme. Benson and the RCMP.
