SONE Stocking Up As fall story lines kick off, culminating in November sweeps, soaps are adding key cast members with the usual well, methodology. Two past. Best Supporting Actor Emmy winners are returning to their respective West Coast shows. It was only last winter that Traci Carlton of Young and the Restless" Maitland and Diamont and Epperson (inset) left Genoa City in search of a writing career. It feels like much longer than that, since Beth Maitland's straight-talking, soulful style served as such an effective counterpoint to that show's mostly mannered character portrayals.

Now, Traci has come back to town. Maitland's limited-duration return is planned as the usual monkey wrench in the romance of her sister Ashley (played by Brenda Epperson) with Traci's ex-husband Brad (played by Don Diamont). Formerly overweight Traci had split with hunky Brad after his former wife Lisa Mansfield (formerly played by Lynne Harbaugh) concocted what was probably the kinkiest kidnap plot in soap history. (How can we forget the few weeks when Lisa kept a bare-chested SEPTEMBER 23, 1990 Brad locked in a circus lion's type cage in the basement, feeding him, among other things, bon-bons?) may have remained a big No. 1 in the ratings since Traci's leave-taking, but it has very much missed Traci's and Maitland's soul.

Welcome back! Late October is still the planned departure point of daytime's most popular character of the last few years, Patch of "Days of Our (Stephen Nichols is not renewing his contract.) Perhaps to console the Warlock (1.) returns; Brennan and Ashford audience, the show is bringing back Billy Warlock as Frankie Brady. When last seen, the cute, mostly uneducated Frankie was heading off to college Columbia, no less. The return of Frankie will create a love triangle with Frankie's former teen flame, Jennifer Horton (played by Melissa Brennan), and her new love, Jack Deveraux (played by Matthew Ashford). In their last go-round, Frankie and Jennifer created soap history by being the first soap teen couple to (a) debate for months with various relatives and friends whether or not they should mutually lose their virginities, and (b) use a condom (although at the time the NBC censor did not allow the use of that specific word). Since Jack and Jennifer (yet another alliterative soup couple) have SEPTEMBER 29, 1990 1990's hot supercouple, the triangle should be most interesting.

In the interim, Warlock was a regular on NBC's And yes, Warlock and "Santa Barbara's Marcy Walker (who plays Eden Castillo) are long divorced. Walker is now married to the father of her son Taylor, cinematographer Stephen Collins. "One Life to Live" has finally firmed up the membership of its major new family, which is black. Terry Alexander has already started as new police commissioner Troy Nichols, and his love interest is slated to be Sheila Price (played by Valerie Pettiford). Pettiford briefly played Detective Courtney Walker.

on 'Another World." Sheila will be the therapist of poor Viki Buchanan (played by Erika Slezak), who has had a stroke. Troy's collegeage daughter Laura Jean will be played by Vanita Harbour, who in real-life is a new graduate of Carnegie-Mellon University. Laura Jean's rap-singing younger brother hasn't been cast yet. "The Bold and the Beautiful" has signed on actor John Brandon to complete the mysteriously traumatized MacClaine family. Brandon's character, Ben Brandon joins one mystery.

MacClaine, is the husband of Helen, who is played by Hitchcock star Tippi Hedren What unnamed horror did Ben cause his children Margo (played by Lauren Koslow) and Jake (played by Todd McKee) in the past?
