Funeral service from Toronto, Tuesday. Interment from D. A Collins Funeral home, 5610 Sherbrooke Montreal on was about to land at Ethiopia's main air base at Debre Zeit, about 52 kilometres south of the capital, Addis Ababa, the diplomats said yesterday. The explosion caused the plane to plunge to the ground but 12 people survived the crash. The army lieutenant, who was not identified, had demanded to be taken to the neighboring east-African nation of Somalia, where he intended to defect from Ethiopia and its hard-pressed armed forces, the diplomats said.

After he saw that the plane was approaching the Debre Zeit base, he pulled the pin from a grenade he was carrying, the diplomats said. Seconds later, a crew member shot him and the grenade exploded. Pro-Western Somalia is a safe sanctuary for Ethiopian military defectors. It has fought an intermittent war with Ethiopia since 1977 when it invaded Somalia through the disputed Ogaden desert border region. Making Mulroney file not officially listed in PMO research job TORONTO (CP) A man who provided the Prime Minister's Office with a background file on Opposition Leader Brian Mulroney says he was formally hired to examine "industrial relations" in Quebec.

Pierre Cadieux said his job description made no mention of Mulroney, the Iron Ore Co. of Canada (of which Mulroney was formerly president), or Schefferville, where Iron Ore wound down its mining operations in 1982. He told the Toronto Globe and Mail he did not know why no reference was made to those areas. But he said he was supposed to keep quiet about his work. Cadieux, a master's student at the University of Ottawa, also said it was his idea to do a title search on Mulroney's house in Montreal, although he did not do the search.

The Globe says the PMO refused yesterday to release Cadieux's job description. But it quotes a description read aloud by Cadieux: "Whereas the principal secretary requires the service of the contractor to examine and research various issues of importance on industrial relations, labor displacement and labor mobility in the province of Quebec; provide a report to the principal secretary on these above-mentioned issues. "The report will be used as background material for the use of the Prime Minister's Office. "The report can also be used for the generation of policy for the use of the government of Canada to alleviate any future displacement of labor and to provide information on unemployment." The House of Commons broke into a two-day squabble last week after reports said the PMO had detailed two employees to dig up politically damaging material on Mulroney and had done a title search on Mulroney's home. The Tory assault fizzled when it was learned that Tory researchers keep a file on Trudeau.

Both opposition parties employ publicly-funded research groups. The PMO has said the title search was prompt-' ed by an article in The Gazette saying Mulroney purchased his home for $1. Cadieux said he found a speech in which Mulroney sympathized with those paying high mortgage rates, and "I started scratching my head and wondering if he really does."
