Cio.ee red Apples are meeting with a moderate but all other varieties, of which, by the way, there is a great abundance, are aolHog slowly, aud asEing prices are being liberally shaded. Referring to the work on the great canal and water power at Folsom the Teltyrapti says: "The State's work on the canal is nearing completion. A gang of men are al- ready at work on the western end of tbe I ditch, and at tho rate the prison officials are now pushing the work, its completion, so far as they are concerned, can be but a matter of a few days. "During a recent visit to the dam we were forcibly impressed with the necessity early actiou on the part of our citi- I that b'olsom may derive thead- I vantages to which her situation on the canal will euutle her.

Folsom will lie the first town iv a position to say to great manufacturing corporations: 'We can oilor for your use the greatest developed water power on Aslhat oiler will be iv our power but a short time, it tainly behooves us, as a business com: inanity, to be ready to take advantage of the opportunities which most decidedly I will be in our favor. "The history of every successful city In the West is that-Uieyare the work of a united people who did their work through a vigorous, progressive Board of Trade, who found business men and site owners ready to strengthen their hands. "We believe the time has come when Folsom should have a Board of Trade, properly equipped to place in the hands of manufacturers and capitalists the advantages we have to otter, and which are all unknown outside a circumscribed limit." It Is Rapidly Coming: to the Front in Every "Way. A. Burrows of Glass Valley, writing from Sacramento to the Tidings of that city, says: "The changes being made in Sacramento are so radical that before the next meeting ol the Legislature there will be a brand new town. The old streets and sidewalks for miles have been torn up aud asphaltum and concrete laid in place of cobbles and boards. Ail the old awnings have been done away with by an ordinance, and light airy projections have taken their place.

When tho improvements are completed the city will not be a whit behind Jose. Then, too, the question of better public roada has been agitated, the brilliant editor of the Becoro-Ukios and the bicycle clubs leading this inarch of progress. County bonds will probably be issued for this Dur'pose. It is only a matter pi time till the good roads movement reaches Nevada County, and at which everyone having one spark of the spirit of progress will rejoice. "The first election under Sacramento's new charter has just come and the progressive element have swept everything before them at the polls.

Like that of (irass Valley, the Sacramento charter makes numerous changes and is abreast of the times. It makes the Justice Courts Police Courts, and makes the position of policeman permanent during good behavior. These, of course, are but a few of many changes. The charter is now under lire for alleged irregularities in the election. In my opinion none ot' tbe objections to it will stick when tlie matter comes into court.

No court will dare to overthrow the will of the people on mere technicalities. "The Capital removal case was argued yesterday iv the Supremo Court before the lull bench of seven Judges, as were also two Nevada (ounty rases. The courtroom was crowded with lawyers from all parts of the State. However the case goes in court, San Jose's chances case of au election are slim. Sacramento may be a seliish, stupid place, but a week's stay in San Jose convinces me thau San Jose is not a whit better.

San Jose hayseed is not a bit more attractive than Sacramento peanuts. San Jose is au extreme town; side by side with great wealth there is groat poverty diamonds and rags on the same body politic." DOWN THE RIVER. Active Work Beluart Done In Many of the Districts. The Kio Vista News always keeps its oye on tbe reclamation districts down the river. Iv its issue of Thursday a correspondent writing from Courtland says; "iieclaiiuUion has taken quite a boom in this neighborhood.

The Pioisou is euijagod in raising the ievees up to the -i-ioot mark. On Merritt Island the dredger Geo. NY. Moore is ruuniug day and niglit. "On Randall Island the Trustees are raising the levees to the 20-ibot mark.

"On Sutter Island the low places in that district are attended to. year the Trustees expect to build quite a substantial levee. "On the uptjer end of Grand Island Truthful Dick Bramletie lias a gang of niou engaged in felling the trees that line the bank of o)d Kiver. The new Grand Island dredger will move shortly to Kercheval's Point and work down the Old Kiver side of the island." The three 5, Clamshell and all at work on the Sacramento side of Braiinitn Island, and tney are doing line work. The levee presents quite a fortification.

The landowners on this ishiud are spending lots of money everyday, but it will cost no more to do the work with three dredgers than to pay lor one and for it to take three limes as long as tor the three to do it.
