With a stage full of young, vigorous musicians, a banker's dozen young composers, some established favorites, and the showmanship of twenty years, Whiteman conducted his eighth concert at Carnegie Hall Sunday night.

It was, more or less, another searching party for a successor to the late George Gershwin. It was also a springboard for the relatively unsung Art Shaw, the neglected Louis Armstrong, the up-and-coming Raymond Scott, and several more. Also, it was one swell evening. One highlight was pianist Roy Bargy's splendid, melodic "Seventh Day." Another was Shaw's intricate, lengthy and beautifully toned "Blues" for the clarinet. Still another was Armstrong old Satchel-mouth himself doing two spirituals.

And add Duke Ellington's "Blue Bells of Harlem." Also Lynn Murray's rhythmic chorus.
