They are designed to keep skidding motorists from crashing off the slope and plunging into the street below. The entire length of the lower center roadway is being repayed with concrete. The 6,000 feet of existing cobblestones is being removed.

This work is done at night, when the traffic is lightest. The new roadway is being built sections. Steel frames, four inches deep and eighteen feet long, are laid by workmen while traffic is diverted into another lane. Concrete is immediately poured into the frames, which are nine feet wide. As the substance hardens, it is steel-brushed to make it almost skid-proof.
