Hundreds of travellers who had been stranded by the near-record snowfall were able to get out yesterday. But travellers' advisories remained in effect across western New York state and the snow belts off Lake Ontario, and state police said many side roads were still clogged. Our streets are open today, but you really wouldn't want to drive on them," said a police officer in Dunkirk, a city of 30,000 on the Lake Erie shore 56 kilometres south of Buffalo that was buried in nearly a metre of snow.

The storm stranded about 250 students, teachers and travellers at six schools in the southern part of Buffalo. More than 130 workers spent "Friday night and much of Saturday at businesses and plants in the southern part of the city, hit hardest by the storm.

At least two deaths were attributed to the storm. During the 24-hour period from Friday until early Saturday snowfall at Buffalo totalled about 50 centimetres the second-heaviest one-day snowfall since recordkeeping began in 1893, the National Weather Sen-ice said. Another six centimetres had fallen by Sunday. The record one-day snowfall for Buffalo was recorded Dec. 15-16, 1945, when 60 centimetres fell.

Torontonians, meanwhile, sampled their first taste of winter Saturday with between 20 and 30 centimetres of snow ushering in December, tying up transportation and causing hundreds of minor accidents. Visibility on city streets ranged from fair to poor to nil during the snowfall. Police reported at midnight that more than 20 cars were stranded on the Don Valley Parkway alone. But a policeman said most of the accidents caused by blowing snow and poor visibility were of the fender-bender variety. However, conditions at Toronto International Airport remained stable despite the confusion on city roads.
