Turn a deaf ear to the scandal monger, for he who speaks ill of his neighbor is rarely in love with the truth. Whiskey is an interpretor of character. Place a man under the influence of it. and it will disclose his true char- i acter. Considerable complaint is heard regarding the English sparrows.

Do not complain, as they were surely created for a purpose. Even the crows were placed on earth for some caws. It is now claimed that Noah discovered the Arkansaw river, as the bible states that when he started the dove out to find land, he stood in the Ark-and-saw. Mormon elders are seeming female converts in the mountain districts of the southern states. It is reported that the snuff- chewing females are joining under the impression that it is a more-men religion.

In Wilson county last week, Chas. Lyon was married toMiss Edith Lamb. Another fulfilment of the scriptural saying that "the Lamb and the Lion shall lie down together and a little child shall lead them." We notice that quite a fight is going on in congress regarding bogus butter. We trust the combative goat is included in the bill. He is not a product of churn, yet he has been known to considerably damage urchin.

Word reaches us that a Coffee county man was recently struck by lightning but was not aware of the fact until he discovered his clothing on fire. That's nothing, we knew a man that was struck by lightning ten years ago. who has not even mentioned it since. Harrison, thelb-y is conducting a red-hot revival at Topeka. The other day he converted a hardened old sinner whose first act of repentance was to rush into a printing office and settle his arrears on Oh, grant us a revival of that kind in this immediate vicinity.

Elijah Brown, the funny man of the Chicago Ledger, attended Moody's revivals and became converted. We feel encouraged. There is some hope for the piratical Kansas editor, for scripture says so long as the lamp continueth to ilickerith the hardest sinner may return. Some of you pirates had better begin reformation ere some one douses the glim, Twenty-eight years ago to-day the writer of tthis article made his debut into this world of sin and hard times. He was born at a very early period of his existence, but, notwithstandimr, the longer he lives the older lie grows and his appetite increases accordingly.

He sadly comprehends that the "birthday party times" have gone glimmering into the past, together with the green apple and the abdominal conliicts. Such is life. So mote it be. A number of persons were recently poisoned at Muilenville, caused by eating bologna sausage. A physician was hastily summoned otherwise a number of deaths might have resulted.

A piece of the sausage was fed to a dog which soon showed all symptoms of being poisoned. The persons affected have all recovered, but the mysterious bologna is no longer in demand. Persons should be very careful about eating bologi.a sausage, and try, if possible, to ascertain whether the tlog was killed in a proper manner, or whether he as poisoned or died from the effects of distemper. Bologna sausage is like the chronic boarding-house hash remnants of things heard of. yet not seen.

The cougar that was captured near this city has become one of the attractions with Johnson's show. We presume the circus lecture on zoology, will dwell long upon th? history of this zoological specimen, informing the wonder-stricken crowd of how "this savage man-eating Mexican puma was captured expressly for this show, at an enormous expense, and the sacrifice of several numan lives. its tne people i want. Its all in a life-time. We pay our money, and see the elephant. The queri anonious young man with lead-pencil legs and a cholicy abdomen, ho has charge of the Prairie Dog, a scurrilous sheet published in a hard town small by, devotes considerable space, in his last issue, to Sun City and the Union. The young man is becoming very billions, resulting no doubt from his having to inhale the poisonous vapor arizing from the fast decaying village of which he is an unfortunate citizen. Young man, you are wasting a young and pious life, as it were, trying to write your name upon the quick-sands of journalism, only to see it disappear as quickly as the last hopes of the folorn town of which you are a representative citizen.

But then we presume it is comme il faut. hence chacun a son gout. Last Tuesday-, at Medicine Lodge, the court struck from the docket the case of Kansas vs. Culpepper, as he is now serving a term in the Missouri pen. Culpepper is the man who murdered young Cloud near this city about two! years ago.

He was arrested, bound over, and as our county had no jail, was taken io the Wichita jail. In a short time he escaped, but is now i wearing striped clothes and holding down a steady situation in the Missouri penitentiary, for a crime committed in he will remain in the employ of Missouri but it is safe to say that if he loses his situation with that firm, in a reasonable time, Barber county will probably-secure him a permanent job at Kiitororl at the Postoffico, in Sun City. S. Thompson the senior of the firm of Thompson Kellev, having purchased Mr. Kelley's interest. We wish the Press continued prosperity. While our city is surrounded with timber, foiming a beautiful verdant belt, it would add greatly to the beauty of our prosperous little city if our citizens would take the pains to set out shade trees along our streets.

D. Barr, one of our farmers living south-west of this city, informs us that his neighborhood is troubled with a person who indulges in petty stealing. He says several household articles have been taken from his house during his absence. We understand the business men of Coldwater will receive their freight via Medicine Lodge instead of Kinsley as heretofore. That's business, and we are glad to note it.

As soon as our bridge is completed at Sun City a new-road will be opened, shortening the distance from Coldwater to Medicine Lodge, by the way of Sun City, at least eisrht miles. The Great Western Circus and Museum of Living Wonders got out of town lasf Sunday, after a lively day with creditors, attachments, etc. In fact the nearer it came the time for Col. Johnson to leave, the stronger jwas the attachment some of our citizens had for him. But the Cob is gone and we must say that we hope he will succeed this summer on the road, as any man who has the gall, nerve or whatever you call it, to tackle anything and who will rustle like Johnson, aught to ueceed Cresset.

In a kindly spirit Ave made mention not long since, of a reckless Medicine Lodge man, who bathed in the river at that point, and poisoned the water for miles below, whereupon the boss liar of the Index says the ater became impregnated with poison by the Union office washing its towel in the river at this city. Oh. what a liar! We have no towel, as we split it into kindling last winter when fuel was so scarce, and now wipe on the place where the towel used to hang. It pains us to think a newspaper man would tell anything but the truth. We have been so busy telling the truth that we forgot there was such a thing as a prevaricator in existence.

As the guardian angel blushingly reports the Index's prevarication, let us hone the recording angel will drop a tear upon the entry and forever blot it out. DISMISSES). The shooting scrape we mentioned as taking place up Turkey Creek a short time since, came up in the district court Wednesday. The Cresset speaks of it follows: 'Two cases from Sun City, Stale of Kansas vs. Wilson, and State of Kansas vs.

lleeso were dismissed at the instance of the County Attorney. It seems that Wilson and Beese are contesting a claim on Turkey creek near Sun City. Last week Wilson saw Reese cutting fence belonging to him and fired a revolver to scare him and at the same time ordered him to stop cutting. Ileese stonped cutting and got a shot gun which he snapped at Wilson. No one was hurt, in fact there was not much danger, sw the cases were dismissed to save ME3IORIAL DAY.

The legislature at its recent session, declared memorial day the 30th of May a legal holiday, and the regulations of the largest organization of surviving soldiers of the late war provided that "when memorial day occurs on Sunday the succeeding day shall be observed." Governor Martin therefore issued the lollowing proclamation Saturday, de- daring Monday, the 31st of May, as memorial day. THE PROCLAMATION. rni i i rue memor oi ine neroic men wno a quarter of a century ago, ralied around the liag of their country with such un- parallelled enthusiasm, and sacrificed their lives to save the life of the repub-! lie should be kept green and fragrant forever. Their splendid achievements wrapped the land of their love in a robe of imperishable glory and gave to the young manhood of the country an' example of courage, patroism, respect for law, and devotion to dutv. which will be an incentive and an aspiration for ages to come.

Therefore John A. Martin, governor of Kansas, do hereby reccommend that Monday, the 31st of May, be dedicated by the people of this state to the memory of the dead soldiers of the Union, and that appropriate ceremonies be held on that day in every city, town and neighborhood throughout the state, A jui testimony wnereoi i nave Here unto subscribed my name, and cause to be affixed the great seal of the state.
