"Only in America," observes the resident happy hooker in a Baltimore flophouse, "can a poor person like Suzy Marta Roque, come from Colombia and find gold and happiness from walking in the streets." Alas, Suzy's boyfriend turns cut to be a rip-off artist posing as a Hollywood producer, who rewards his conquests by proposing marriage but leaves his intended with a carton of Zippo lighters. Poor Suzy and the other emotional outcasts of Hot Baltimore, the latest in a string of sitcoms from Norman Lear Co, are headlining TV's so-called second season: a yahoo bellhop (played by Stretch Cunningham from All In The Family); Suzy 'and her hooker roomie (with a Goodyear tire at her midriff); a very minty gay couple; an old codger whose illicit hot plate goes up in flames; and the son of the establishment's overbearing Mama. Also loose amongst the rat-trap furniture and a flotilla of avaricious cockroaches is a Berkeley-styled radical who doesn't realize the campus capers of the 60s are over and a 26-year-old named Moose who wears diapers and writes graffiti on the walls. It's no news that nothing shocks the nerve-endings on TV, be it V.D., abortion, rape or the quickie vasectomy. So new alleys of humor are being revealed at an alarming rate a flophouse in this case where those loveable denizens come and go, spouting jokes about their down-an-out condition and taking time to listen and pat one another on tjhe shoulder.

They care, you see. "There's something sweet and sentimental about a hooker getting married" voices a Hot Baltimore resident before Suzy was jilted. The others aren't about to be upstaged. "If there are any calls for me," announces Suzy's friend, "I'll be in the ladies' room re-evaluating my life." Zing. The lines come and go with the speed of a Laugh-In spree and the comic possibilities of Hot Baltimore are endless even if Lear is reaching too far for a comic scenario (he lifted the show from an off-Broadway play).

The timing was off in the first episode and there seemed to be too many characters to assimilate all at once, but Hot Baltimore has enough of a kick to be a winner. It's Airport and Hotel all wrapped in one, teeming with sub-plots and an almost inexhaustable string of depression jokes akin to Rodney Dangerfield (Sample: "My high school was so rough that ithe student newspaper had an obit The show bears watching. Meanwhile it's no news that George Jefferson, Archie Bunker's black neighbor, -hit it big with his laundry business and has moved from Queen's to New York's upper East Side. Here also the comic possibilities are endless even if George is destined to become (he black flip side of Archie. Jefferson, for instance, is determined that his wife psrf.

When a black girl from the agency arrives and notices the Jefferson's posh apartment, and double-takes when she meets the interracial couple whose daughter is slated to marry son Lionel, she says.

"Why is it that no one told me we bad overcome?" When Jefferson objects to his wife's friendship with another black domestic, he screams: "You're East Side and she's West Side and I don't want no crosstown traffic in my kitchen." At least two episodes of The Jeffersons have passed and there are early signs that the Norman Lear factor' may not be able to keep up the pace. The writing is clearly inferior to All In The Family and Maude. They have constructed several convenient hostile situations George's intruding mother and the dicey relationship between the Jeffersons and Lionel's prospective in-laws but there is no recognizable rhythm. The Bunker living room sever seemed to be a confining place; the Jefferson's high rise apartment is suffocating, much like a Broadway play confined to one room. On the plus side Jeffersons have a stable of fine actors, especially Sherman Hemsley as George.

His comic timing is second only to Jean Stapleton as Edith Bunker. He waves his arms eagerly 'like chimp on a desert island; he's cocky about hitting it moderately big and falls into the pitfalls of overstatement; and he's funny. Isabel San-ford, as the long-suffering Louise, has the most complicated part: she feels the wrenching sensation of a one-room-cold -water-flat upbringing, to a highrise where amiable whites drop by for a drink and the doorman doffs his hat. Lear could develop the character of Louise much further more of a complete entity to push against a black Archie. Maybe it's too soon to tell but The Jeffersons should mark the end of the most recent evolution of the situation comedy since All In The Family broke the realistic ice.

Already the age lines are showing, just as Laugh-In had a limited life span. Sure the "Norman Conquest" is funny but isn't it time for another upheaval, another new wave? Premature death due to repetition is becoming self-evident and we may be heading for a funeral from over-saturation of similar styles from Maude to Good Times to Hot Baltimore to The Jeffersons. To soon we'll have a vacuum to fill. 1 739-7944 FENN ARM'S Shoshanim Mar. 9, RADIO-TV ANNOUNCER TRAINING.
