SO Good A drive up the river on the piiie from Washington to Colonel Hall's proves interesting on account of the work done by the owners of ranches in erecting levees. At Biyte'r, Flint's, l.ovdal's, Merkley's, and in fact all along fur about eight extensive improvements have been made. The old break on the Sutherland place hat been closed by the Lovdal, partly at the expense of the ounty, and the break at the Koglish place has also been ii.l.lv attended to at the expense of Mf-r-, 11 irtley, I.v tad Flint. Turner Hall was opened as a by the i -lite Comic Opera Company. The hone; was crowded, much bo that a large number were turned away at the door, there not being standing-room.

The opera of ''Gireiie- Gin was well rendered on both occasions. The "Chimes of Normandy will be given on Tuesday evening. The managers are Edward Bar.eit and Frtnk Rohrback, of San Francisco. The price of admission is 25 cents. Beer, liquors and cigars are sold thronghoat the audience.

Tee audience was fairly representative, perfect order was preserved, and the entertainment wan conducted very much after the manner of like cheap amusements in San Francisco, bach as the Tivoli, Winter Garden, etc. The enthusiasm with which the singers were received, and the generosity of the applause, should testify to the management that the audience were well satisfied. The leading singers were Miss Fannie Morse, once well known here as Fannie Marston, leading soprano, with a strong voice well adapted to opera bouffe, and who showed marked improvement over any previous efforts here Frank Rohrback, a good tenor for comic opera, who last night entirely recovered his voice, which he was unable to use Saturday evening Mr. Forester, baritone Mr. Jatsen, baritone Miss Ella Fevre, soprano Miss Noco McCabs, contralto, and a number of female voices.

The troupe lacks a basso. The orchestration was satisfactory. By discreet management concerning the character of the auditors admitted, and which has thus far been preserved, there would seem to be no reason why cheap entertainments by the company may not be maintained here for all those who do not object to the furnishing of bar refreshments throughout the auditorum. The Weather. George E.

Noonan, meteorologist of Weaverville, Trinity county, informs Sergeant Berwick that there has been 4.09 inches of rain in that vicinity during the past month, and the prospect on the 11th was for more moisture. Stolen Ride About li o'clock Saturday evening, Frank Gregory dro7e up to the Post( in hid buggy, and stepped into the boil ing to mail some letters. When he returned, horse and buggy had disappeared. During the evening that vehicle was seen at various times and quickly appearing and rapidly disappearing, like a sort of Flying Dutchman, the horse at the top his spaed, and two individuals under the highest pressure obtainable from whisk; constantly persuading him not to relax his efforts. The owner of the property procured another vehicle ant? started in pursuit, going down the lliversida road, out to Brighton, acd in fact his search was continued nearly all night.

Amatkcb the Fear or two a number of Sscramentanu have become greatly interested as amateurs in photography, and apparently the more attention they give the subject the more attractive does it become. This is especially the csee with those who delight in catrpirg out," or making pleasure excursions to points of interest.

Every pleasant camp is photographed, every bit oi charming scenery, every wierd canyon, cosy dell or beautiful stream is as faithfully reproduced as the artist has sbility to accomplish, and apparently delight is taken in the work in proportion to the difficulty of achieving success. It was not until the invention aad general introduction of "dry plates that photography became popular among amateurs. Since then, however, the number of arsateurs has very largely increased. Most of them start in with a small camera and modest outfit, but soon find that to do artistic and creditable work they must have good boxes," fine leases, and a corresponding set of appliances. For, be it known, the amateur is inspired with as keen a sense o5 rivalry, in a friendly way, as the professional photographer, and the possession of a perfectly developed negative and skillfully toned print brings joy to the maker.

She had been coaled up a day or two before, preparatory to an excursion, and the parties who appropriated her found everything ready fcr use. The owners immediately suspected certain individuals of being the guilty parties, surmised that she had been taken up river, and a dispatch was sent to Knight Landing to have a lookout maintained. The watchman on the Sacramento and Yolo bridge sported, however, that she was dropped below the bridge 9 o'clock Saturday night.

Her engines were not put in motion until she whs about opposite the foot of I street. Then steam was use 1, and she went down the river, cer whistling as though about to make a landing. The watchman did not suspect anything wrong, believing that she was going out legitimately on a pleasure trip. It would appear (hat everything went rmootbly until Freeport, when the boat ran upon a sand bar, and her crew, after working an honr or two to get her afloat, abandoned her. She was brought back to the city about 10 last night.
