13 SCOREBOARD Trading to take place of talking Dec. 8, 1987, Murfreesboro, News Journol win, lose DKllW and thus shorten games by reducing the strike zone. Pitchers have complained for years about the incredible shrinking strike zone, and the new strike zone interpretation from just above the bottom of the ribs to the top of the knees is smaller than the rule book calls for. But committee member Pat Gillick of Toronto said the newly defined strike zone is larger than umpires have been using. Sisk, 30, was 3-1 with three saves in 55 appearances last season and "can keep the ball in the park," Orioles General Manager Roland Hemond said. "He's got a chance to be our bullpen stopper." Atlanta and Horner, 30, opened talks aimed at putting the slugging infielder back in the Braves' uniform he wore for nine seasons. Horner hit 215 homers and had 652 runs batted in for Atlanta but couldn't reach contract terms last year and instead earned megayen with the Yakult Swallows of the Japanese Pacific League. Horner was paid an estimated $2 million in salary and expenses and Yakult reportedly is willing to swallow a new $10- million, three-year deal. But while some major league teams reportedly lost interest in Horner because he is considerably heavier than the 215 pounds he weighed in Atlanta, both the Braves and the Texas Rangers are courting him.

Horner lives in nearby Irving, Texas. The Braves are said to be offering $1 million for one year, or only about half the $1.8 million Horner got in 1986. "We've made an offer to him and his agent (Bucky Woy) said Thanks, but no Braves spokesman Bob DiBiasio said. "Our owner (Ted Turner) has been quoted as saying that is our final offer." The Yankees, seeking more punch in a lineup that already includes Don Mattingly, Dave Winfield and Rickey Henderson are reportedly willing to give up three players for Parker, the former All-Star right fielder who was paid $1.4 million this year. Parker, 36, hit .253 with 26 homers and 97 RBI but slumped badly in the second half of the season.

"We're not shopping him but we'll listen to offers for him," Reds Manager Pete Rose said. The Yankees supposedly have offered the Reds outfielder-catcher Phil Lombardi, pitcher Bill Fulton and outfielder Henry Cotto. If they don't get Parker, the Yankees may go after Cleveland outfielder Mel Hall. They also are interested in Atlanta shortstop Rafael Ramirez, as is Houston. The world champion Minnesota Twins also like Parker.

Toronto and Oakland have discussed a possible deal involving Lloyd Moseby and Carney Lansford. Hemond said the Orioles hope to complete at least one more trade. "I really love all this," he said, alluding to the constant wheeling and dealing. Trades and near-trades usually highlight the week-long hot stove meetings, but there was plenty of other news Monday Rose confirmed he's played his final game because, "At age 46, if' I'm not retired, I should be." The major leagues' all-time hit leader hasn't played since August 1986 and "I thought I was retired," Rose said. The rules committee said it hopes to increase the number of strike calls The committee also redefined the balk rule, ruling a pitcher must have both feet, not just one, on the ground while in the set position.

Umpires also may eject pitchers and managers after beanballs without first giving warning. The deadline for free agents to be offered salary arbitration passed and Dwayne Murphy, Steve Garvey, Glenn Hubbard, Jose Cruz, Vance Law, Joaquin Andujar and Bill Madlock were among the 32 players not offered arbitration. They can't re-sign with their teams until May 1. Among those offered arbitration just before the midnight EST deadline were John Candelaria, Bill Almon and Lee Mazzilli of the New York Mets, Bryn Smith and Dennis Martinez of the Montreal Expos, Dave Collins of Cincinnati and Juan Berenguer of the Minnesota Twins. Bob Dernier, formerly of the Chicago Cubs, signed as a free agent with his original team, the Philadelphia Phillies.

Manager Lee Elia plans touse him as a platoon center fielder and pinch-hitter and Dernier said, "I can put my Phillies' hat back on the Christmas tree." 1-23, McNeil 1-20, Klever 1-12, Townsell Ml. The Warriors will be without the services of senior guard Rob Gardner, who sustained an ankle injury against Oakland. "Hopefully he'll be ready to go by Friday," Hopkins said. The Lady Bulldogs are also coming off a district win over Hendersonville, but more importantly for Coach Harry Gill's squad it meant the return of Tracy Adkinson, Smyrna's leading scorer. Adkinson, who is still averaging 15.0 points a game despite scoring only nine against the Lady Commandos, played in her first game (Continued from page 11) We're both going to have to play very good defense.

Overall, it sounds like the makings of a pretty good game." Hopkins said the Bulldogs may have the most talent of any team the Warriors have played to date. sounds like they have a lot of material," Hopkins said. Gill's squad will still be hampered by the loss of point guard Christina Thompson, who may have suffered a season-ending knee injury against Mt. Juliet. Thompson's role will be filled by Raquel Peebles, who will be playing her third game at the position. Lee -Maynard will be the Lady Bulldogs' only other scoring threat. She has scored in double figures in Smyrna's last two contests while filling in for Adkinson.

"It will take a strong effort on our part," Lady Warrior coach Buddy Pate said. "I feel like they have an- experienced team and that this is their year. "They will play a lot harder for us anojb, think we will for them. It'll boil down to who wants it the most." Pate said the keys to success for -the Lady Warriors would be playing string defense, keeping turnovers to a minimum and balanced scoring. Smyrna will be back in District 9 action Friday when the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs face Beech.

Cleveland at Golden State. 10:30 p.m. 1. I Sparta to accommodate the event. That may be true, but the situation did seem a little strange.

My main gripe is the way the banquet was handled. In just a little over an hour meals were served, all-district players were introduced by respective coaches and awarded a plaque, and everybody went on their merry way. None of the administrators, coaches or players on hand made speeches. What would have been a good opportunity to praise and promote District 7 football, what with media from four of the five cities in attendance, was simply wasted. Because of that, it was a very boring evening.

Still, I'm glad that the schools in District 7 do make an effort to honor their outstanding young football players. My congratulations to Oakland's Terrence Hughes, Trip Meredith, Steven McAdoo and Rendell Hugle and Riverdale's Larry McMahon, Ricky Sanders, Joe Turner and Freddie Osborne.
