rTT The GAZETTE, Montreal, Saturday, December 20, 1980 35 FILMS The boss gets the works in 'Nine To Five It i an unlikely plot in which the boss is chained in his own home while the three revolutionize the running of the office. Women are now no longer referred to as more blacks and handicaDDed workers are hired; men. Sure, this all oversimplifies a complex situation.

And the film has a very forced, unconvincing ending. But it's a highly unusual case of a Hollywood comedy that's fun and' yet still makes some intelligent points. Country-western superstar Parton makes her film debut in this interesting vehicle and her apparently natural gift for comic timing is a great boon. Tomlin harvests as many laughs as possible from the script and Fonda turns in a reasonably amusing, slightly understated performance. You may remember Dabney Coleman as Merle Jeeter, the reverend-turned-mayor on Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman.

For many of these women in sometimes underpaid, sometimes humiliating positions, the comedy Nine to Five will seem to hit the proverbial stapler on the head. Jane Fonda, with her well-known anti-sexist and leftist politics, co-produced this witty film. So it's not surprising that this movie has a lot more to say about on-the-job exploitation than any television comedies.

Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dolly Par-ton play office workers who harbor fantasies of revenge on their boss Franklin Hart (Dabney Coleman). Parton, as a personal secretary, dreams up a marvellously funny scenario in which she's a cowgirl subjecting Hart to the same sort of sex- Dolly Parton (left), Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda commiserate and plan to get even with their boss in 'Nine To Five' ual harrassment that he foists on her And in a partly-animated sequence as a "highly sexist, egotistical, lying, the story.
