The GAZETTE, Montreal, Saturday, November 22, 1980, Mob boss Tieri convicted NEW YORK (UPI) Frank "Funzi" Tieri, the reputed boss of the Genovese crime family, was convicted yesterday on charges he headed the secret national crime syndicate known as La Cosa Nostra the first defendant to be convicted on such charges. A U.S. District Court jury found Tieri guilty of using his position as a Mafia chief to take part in racketeering activities and to authorize a "hit" on a California man who owed the mob money. Tieri, 76, of Brooklyn's Bath Beach section, took the verdict without emotion while seated in his wheelchair. He had tried to have his trial postponed indefinitely because of illness.

Obituaries Ex-MP Dr. P.B. Rynard ORILLIA, Ont. (CP) Dr. P.B.

Rynard, Progressive Conservative MP for 22 years and personal physician to the late John Diefenbaker, died Thursday after a lengthy illness. Rynard, 84, had suffered a stroke in his Orillia office last February and after a stay in hospital, had been resting at the home of his son, John, northeast of the city. Rynard, first elected in Simcoe North (then Simcoe East) in 1957, led the riding through six elections and accompanied Diefenbaker on a world tour in 1959. He stepped down after the May 1979 election was called. He was well known for his work in geriatric medicine and recently had been working with a herbal cancer remedy developed by a Bracebridge, area nurse.

He was a director of Respirin which has obtained rights to have the remedy tested. He is survived by his son, John, and four grandchildren. A memorial service will be held tomorrow in Orillia. Pulitzer winner Fischetti CHICAGO AP John Fischetti, Pulitzer prize-winning political cartoonist for The Sun-Times and the Field Newspaper Syndicate, has died at age 64. One of his final cartoons, titled A Land of Plenty, appeared in Thursday's Sun-Times.

It depicted barrels of toxic waste atop each other, with a dollar sign and the word "greed" written above them. Fischetti was pronounced dead Tuesday night in Columbus Hospital where he was taken after being stricken at his home. The cause of his death was not diagnosed immediately, hospital officials said. A newspaper official said the cartoonist had suffered several heart attacks and had undergone bypass surgery. A native of the New York City borough of Brooklyn, Fischetti received the Pulitzer prize for editorial cartooning in 1969.

Special recognition came for his powerful My Son, My Son cartoon, drawn after the death of United Nations Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjold. Ex-Australian PM McEwen MELBOURNE, Australia (UPI) Sir John McEwen, former Australian Prime Minister and National Country party leader, died Thursday night at his Melbourne home. He was 80. He was prime minister for a short period in 1967-68 after the drowning of his predecesser, Harold Holt. McEwen served with Australian military forces in the First World War and was leader of the Country Party from 1958 to 1971.

Cleared man to be deported CALGARY (UPC) An illegal immigrant, cleared of rape and assault charges, has been turned over to immigration officials for deportation to his native Scotland. George Murdoch, 29, who came to Calgary illegally in 1976, was found not guilty Wednesday. The eight-woman, four-man jury deliberated 11 hours before returning the verdict. Tieri was acquitted of a tax evasion charge. Tieri, who came to the United States from Milan as a youth, had one previous conviction for robbery in 1922.

Prosecution witnesses, including admitted mob hit man Aladena Fratianno and mobster Joseph Cantalupo, testified that Tieri took part in extortion, a scheme to defraud the Korvettes department store chain and a skimming operation that led to the collapse of the Westchester Premier Theatre in Tarrytown, N.Y. UPI Hugh Chambliss points starter's pistol at Zelmar Greenwood yesterday in Florida Fireman who lost his pension holds pistol at chief's head ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.

Diamond sells for a record $4.6 million GENEVA, Switzerland (UPI) The famous "Polar Star" diamond that once belonged to Napoleon Bonaparte's brother sold for a world record price of $4.6 million for a single gem at auction, Christies auction house announced yesterday. The 41.28-carat, square diamond was bought by Razeen Salih, a Sri Lanka dealer with interests in Thailand and Saudi Arabia. An official of Christie's where experts had valued the stone at $1.5 million said Salih was "hell bent on getting it." The stone was extracted from the Golconda mines in India, and belonged to Joseph Bonaparte, King of Naples and brother of He said he had been prepared to hold Greenway for one or two hours.

"But I wouldn't have hurt him," he said. "I was going to bring a shotgun, I was that angry for awhile," Chambliss said. Instead, he carried a starter's pistol with the barrel bored out and loaded with blanks. Chambliss said he had been cheated out of a pension by the city. After Chambliss talked to reporters at the scene, he was booked on charges of aggravated assault, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and false imprisonment.

Greenwood, who is retiring Jan. 1 after 34 years with the fire department the last 18 as chief suffered only a cut on his hand in a scuffle with Chambliss when he first approached him in the parking lot. Atlanta police fear 'cycle' coming around ATLANTA (UPI) Apparently fearful that the killer of Atlanta's black children may be ready to strike again, police yesterday set up a close watch for the weekend. Eleven children have been found slain. Four are still missing.

Because the killer or killers seem to follow a 3 week cycle, police planned to keep an extra close watch over the weekend. Selective roadblocks were planned in some sections of the city and patrols will be increased in others. The last known victim was 9-yearold Aaron Jackon, who disappeared Nov. 1. His body was found the next day.

Police in neighboring DeKalb County plan to join the weekly search today for the four missing children. A DeKalb County official said searchers will be looking for clues to the disappearances of 11-year-old Christopher Richardson, who vanished from sight while walking from his home to a neighborhood swimming pool June. 9. The intensified police effort coincided with a report by a 10-year-old boy that two men tried to abduct him, and a disclosure by police that a bloody windbreaker found during a recent search may be linked to the child killings. Police Commissioner Lee P.

Brown would not discuss results lab tests conducted on the windbreakers because he regards the jacket as "evidence," polie official Marian Lee said. Lee also said the 35-member task force set up to investigate the crimes was looking into a report by young Bobby Lee Steed that two men tried to pull him into a waiting car as he was walking to school Thursday morning. "They're (the investigators) still talking over the situation with the boy to see how consistent it is with the other cases," she said. "We have no reason at this point not to believe this little boy." Government lifts ban on 1.5-litre pop OTTAWA (UPC) The federal government yesterday lifted a national 15-month ban prohibiting the advertising and sale of 1.5-litre soft drink bottles and replaced it with stringent new construction standards for the bottles.
