Esmonds' show was like a TV taping cow Alan, Wayne, Jay and Merrill the four older brothers reappeared with instruments this time, dressed like Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. They got through a lively Beatles medley before they ditched the pastel jackets and the confusion started. ran.

nil That was it. End of show. The houselights came on so quickly at the end of the 50-minute concert, the audience didn't have time to ask for an encore. They allowed themselves to be hustled out after a round of polite, studio-audience applause. And alter Munch, the opning act, had worked so hard to warm them up.

These four lamee-uphol-stered young men managed to mention the name of their record company five times in a spare, half-hour set. 111 7 a I B-room version of 'Resurrection Shuffle' complete with choreography. Their four voices then took on the Bee Gees' 'Stayin' Alive' the mandatory falsetto done meritoriously. Baby Jimmy, suffering terminal puppy fat. was the next to be introduced.

The band overpowered him, too, on the chorus of the James Taylor tune he sang. Donnie and Marie then returned to ask the quintessential question "Does Donnie wear purple socks with his white suit on stage?" Marie, in pink chiffon and stilletto heels, demanded a drum role and had the audience count down, urging Donnie to de-shoe. He did. does wear purple socks, and remained shoeless at the piano during a Greatest Hits medley, 'Paper Roses' and 'Go Away Little Girl' among them. The sibling pair then did a frantic rock 'n' roll roster of songs providing the setting for Donnie's next coup a cane, that when pointed, produced- fire and smoke explosions and attendant exclamations from the audience.

Marie had to fight the smoke throughout her next number. By MOIRA DANN Special to The Gazette OTTAWA The only piece of ancillary apparatus the Osmonds' forgot was their applause sign. The audience at their Saturday night Central Canada Exhibition grandstand show had little indication, other than the sounds creeping in from the midway and the applause sign's absence, that they were attending a live concert and not a television taping. Still, almost 10.000 warmed the seats at Lans-downe Park, including a pie-pubescent female contingent from Montreal wearing navy blue T-shirts bearing the legend "The Montreal Osmond Underground Rest assured these ladies, after removing their blue eye makeup and donning their orthodonic gear, need no longer dream that their fondest wish will come true it came true Saturday night After an introduction by a white-suited emcee, the Osmonds' eight-piece backup band (keyboards, bass, rhythm guitar, drums, congas, trombone, saxa-phone and trumpet) broke into a tight, spirited AM radio medley. This accompanied some Osmond home movies, projected on a curtain pulled across the stage, including shots from Donnie and Marie's television spectacular, early-Andy Williams footage and scenes from their new movie, Goin' Coconuts' to be released in October.

Myriad shots of Donnie in a suit and shades brought both screams-of anticipation and sighs of relief from the audience. The anticipation didn't have to be endured for long Donnie and Marie soon appeared dressed in red and black suits, one the negative image of the other he wore black where she wore red. Step-kicked They rendered yet another song about dancing amid metered shots of dry ice from the sides and rear of the stage. They step-kicked-step-kicked their way through this and a number titled On The Their very adept band tended to drown them out; Marie was barely audible at times. But her brothers certainly were.

One sat at the piano, one climbed into the bandstand and played the drums, one picked a banjo each proved he wasn't just another pretty face, but in such quick succession it was hard to keep score. By CECILIA BLANCHFIELD of The Gazette In 'The Mafu Cage' director Karen Arthur has taken one of the classic formulas of the B-Grade horror flick and turned it into purest poetry. Remember Whatever Happened to Baby started a whole genre oi movies.

The most common plot involved two siblings, trapped by age and circumstance. One was always crippled, either physically or emotionally, and the other was invariably mad. These films still seem to satisfy some atavistic urge in the. general public. At their worst, they're a kind of sexist Grand Guignol.

gushing blood all over the screen. At their best, as in the 'The Mafu Cage' they can be psychological thrillers of rare and disturbing intensity. Traditional motifs Arthur has incorporated most of the traditional motifs, including the swirling drapes in the storm stuff, the jagged lighting, hypnotic music, and traditional knifelike editing And her basic plot-line is immediately recognizable. But once the mood is established, she proceeds to polish it to brutal gleam. This is a beautifully crafted film, full of deeply sensual images.

It succeeds on the strength of those images. Their effect is cumulative. The Mafu Cage' creeps up on you. little by little. First of all, Arthur refuses to use old women as ready-made grotesques.

Her two heroines, Ellen (Lee Grant) and her psychotic younger sister Sissie i Carol Kane) are highly attractive Their home is warm and inviting. Ellen is an intelligent Voman with an important job at an astronomical observatory. Even Sissies PRODUCTIONS' Ui-JI V.U4 MtJNKlANU AVt 4H4 J'WS eccentricity seems charming at first. The story is fairly simple: Ellen and Sissie are the children of an eminent naturalist, who made a special study of simians. His death left Sissie absolutely distraught, and she attempts to keep contact with her dead father by doing detailed portraits of pet monkeys, which she is ostensibly going to use to illustrate her father's books.

Dead Mafu Unlortunatly. Sissie seems to run through her subjects rather quickly. Something annoys her. and Smash! Bang' Yow! It's another dead her name for her pets out to the vegetable garden. Ellen bears this slaughter with tight-lipped resignation.

She also tolerates Sissie's sub-tropical lifestyle, in her lair of jungle fronds, African sculptures and tribal drum soundtrack. Carol Kane, who would look exotic in a paper bag. gets a wardrobe worthy of a Kikiyu princess. It would he terribly wrong to spoil the suspense by spilling anymore. Suffice it to say.

that Sissie exhausts ail the primates and starts in on homo sapiens. "The Mafu Cage' has not yet been commercially released in Canada, but you can see it at Montreal Film Festival tomorrow at 3 p.m. at l.e Parisien cinema, 480 St. Catherine West. It is not in official competition.
