U.S. watching our switch to metric TORONTO (CP) When it comes to metrication, Canada is setting the lead for the United States, says Paul Boire, director of the federal metric commission. Boire told the American Society for Quality Control meeting in Toronto that the U.S. is following Canada's switch to the metric system and copying its pattern in introducing the measurement. He said in an interview that members of the American National Metric Council have visited Ottawa several times to view Canada's conversion to the metric system and that he and other Canadian com-; mission officials have offered advice at the council's board meetings in Washington.

Ontario our of proposed satellite deal TORONTO (CP) After spending $175,000, the Ontario Educational Communications Authority (OECA), has dropped its proposed participation in experimental programs on the Communications Technology Satellite (CTS), says David Cook, former director of the project The ministry of colleges and universities recommended a four-year development, use and evaluation of the proposed program in a confidential submission to the Ontario cabinet last summer.

Whjen the cabinet had not approved it by the end of March, the program was suspended. The federal government has spent $62 million developing the satellite, which is to be launched in December by the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The CTS project is to test new communications satellite technclogv for possible use in the '1980s. CTS allows the use of smaller and cheaper grounl stations than is twscible with the Anik satellite, now in orbit.

Born in Peterborough, Capt.

Waddell joined the RCAF before the war and was in the first unit the City of Toronto No. 110 Squadron to be sent to Britain. The unit became the 400 Squadron and was sent on re-connaisance and strafing missions. Before the invasion of Europe, his unit was credited with wrecking or damaging more than 100 locomotives. In 1945, his wing (39 Reconnaissance)) was the first Allied unit to occupy a German airfield.

John Reble, the first full-time president of the Canada synod of the Lutheran Church in America, died yesterday at his Kitchener home. He was 87. He came out of retirement on four different occasions io serve the church, retiring for the last time at age 80. Dr. was ordained in in Hamilton and served three Ontario parishes, Denbigh.
