Tribaae. ysnet UM pild ip "r-r? j-- feJtfSfeCJi ljVBili TOM GRAHAM KILLED, Shot From Ambush by a Man Supposed to be Ed Tewksbury. News was received, by telctrnm, at tho Sheriff's officii an Tuesday, of tho killing of Tom Graham by Ed. Towksbury, near Tempo on Tuesday morning, about 7 o'clock. Tho details of tho tragic occurrenco, which rb- Uumo to bo reasonably accurate, np pcared first in thoPhmnlx Herald, and whlchpin Bubstanco, nro as follows) Tom Graham started from his home near tlie Bnttea on Tuesday morning, for Tempo with load of grain, ami had proceeded only a short dlstanco whon ho was shot from cover and fell from his wagon to tho ground unconscious.

Mrs. Dr. Grogg, near whoso place tho shooting occurred, was in hor yard milking a cow, md hearing th6 report of tho gun, looked up and saw thol smoke, saw Graham fail from his sent on the wagon, and man, who sho identified as Tewksbury, mount and put spurs to his horeo and disappear across tho country in tho direction of Tonto Basin. It is stated that Mr. Fr.mkonburgsaw Towksbury after the shooting mounted a largo bay horeo going at a rapid pace.

John Rhodes, who had been in and about Tempo for several days, and whose notions, tho Horald says, had caused comment, the beb'of being that ho wae there to keep watch of tho movements of Graham, wai arroatod as an accomplice. A posse was organised and started in pursuit of Tewksbury, but did not follow him far, as at 4:45 p. m. Charlie McFarland, who was with tho posse, returned to Tempe and said tho trail had been losk Graham was shot from tho left side the road; the ball entered back at tho left shoulder and came out below the right ear. He was conscious at intervals and tho Herald says, "talked a little," but whether he made any statement of the shooting is not reported.

Graham died Tuesday nfter-noon. Tl raporl of tho killing of Tom Graham occasioned lftfke surprise in Globe, as some such denouement was Hooked for. It is generally regretted, however, as the prevailing opinion is that it will revive the "Pleasant Valley war." The IleraM states that tho feeling at Tompe is, strongly jjalnetTowkeuryV bjit.Ws opinion of tho people there Is formed without a knowledge of the cauete which led up to tho shooting. The feud between the Grahams and Tewkabnrys if of long standlngi 4 The first 'tortile was the murder of a Mexican sheep herder in the employ of the Tawksburys, in the spring of 18S7. The ouppoeed murderers! were tracked from the scene of Hie A young MxieH, Arrived to killing to Gmham's home ranch.

Thetprascott Satutflav to consult with notorious Pleasant Valley war was be gun in earnest on tho Oth of August, 18S7, at George Newton's ranch, wlien Jolin Payne and H. Blevinvare killed, and Thos. Tucker and Gillespie woiliided ty the 'lewksbury party, win) claimed that the Tucker party went to Kewton's for the purpose of murder, but were foiled by their vigilant opponents. Kewton's house jeas Bubjequentiy burned. This was followed by the killing of John Tows-bury aud Vm Jacobs, near the Towksbury ranch, and by tho violent loaths of twelve others, adherontaof i opposmgctions.Ji'om Graham's death makes ihe number of faUiHUoa seventeen, not inoluding old man Blevins wlio mysteriously disappeared from Pleasant Valley during tho war iri 1S87, and Geo.

A. Newton, supposed to have drowned in Salt r.vor April 18th, 1892, but believed by some to have been waylaid and killed. It is olaimed by the friends of Tewksbury that the lives of Newton, Rhodes and himself had been repeatedly threatened, and but very recently ho was in receipt of anonymous letters written from Tompe, threatening to kill him- It is also all3ged that some time between July 10th and 10th, present year, Graham and another man were in Pleasant Valley and lay in wait for Ed. Tewksbury along the rail he was oxjvected to travel, but he wb wary and always avoided the beaten trails in the Valley country. Tewksbury will most likoiy find his to Pleasant Valley, where ho will ho almostiiKpregnable and seCute from arrest.

It is not probable that nny posse sent into tho Valley could ap-prohend him, as he would be informed of their overy n'ovement Following is a hat of Uio casualties in tho Pleasant Valley feud Moxican i eheep herder, killed on Cherry Creek; Payne II. Blevins, killed at Now-ton's ranch; John Towksbury and Wm. Jacobs, killed at Towksbury's ranoh; Henry Middleton (no relation of the uuuily of that mnno in Globo) and Win. Graham, killed in Pleasant .1,11 wuvjnjl, iuuau iiuuvil and Uio Blevins boy.killod at Holbrook; John Graham and Chos. Blovlus, killed by sheriff 's iiosso at Porkin'B store.

Pleasant Valley; Al. Roso, killed at the Tfnnrlnn rannli Plmunnr. Tlm Stott, Jim Scott and Jeff Wilson, lynched in tho Mogollon mountains; Tom Graham, shot near Tempo; old man Blevins, missing. In addition to tho above, ISllenwood, TUckor, Gilloe- pie, Jake Lauffer and others wore wounded in the eneountonun the sum-1 aierofl87. The Gaaettealid Republican, of Aug: Su, give a somewhat uilTcrent vorsion from tho above, Thoy agi-eo that Towksbury and Rhodes rode up behind Graham, who hearing them approach, laolted back and recognized thorn.

Graham attempted to jump from tho wagon whon ho received a shot in tho eldo and fell to the ground. Graham made an anto-mortom stnte- rnont, in which ho declared that both Towksbury and Rhodes fired upon him. This is not credited hore as both men aro known to be dead shots and Lit is hardly i.ossiblo that either would have missed Graham at short range. Rhodes professes entire ignoranco of tho affair. Tho Gazette Nays that tho Mesa officials had been by telephone of the Bhootliig, and wero or ganising a posse for pursuit when Towksbury rode leisurely by, and 1 within a few foot of Justieo Newell i who wna armed with doublo bar- relied shot gun.

Towksbury was not recognized and rodo on unchallenged. The success of Mrs. Aunio M.
