Arizona Silver Belt Thursday soptehuer i 1898 nfi ISSUES BEFORE THE PEO PLE i The partUata prssij bas raised lbs statehood fetich in an attempt to bliud be voters of tbe territory to the real lsueof tba campaign Republicans as well as democrats know Mil well tbfit statebood for Arizona is a very reruoto possibility As a talisman it baa lost its power to conjure witb Tbo records of tbo nineteenth legislature and of the McCord administration are mighty poor credential Tt itU which to go boforo congross asking autonomy for Arizona Tbo sohood bantling was accouched and nursod by tbo political push of both parties with tbo design to create more offices and more opportunities to plunder the taspavara The political history of Arizona furnishes an almost unbroken record of corruption and imbecility in tbe administration of affairs and tbo territory is teday groaning under excessive taxation and a debt in eluding county and municipal of more than 3000000 It is carUiu if un der tbo restraints placed upon territories by tbo federal la a Arizona has reachod the breakers which wash the rocks of bankruptoy those restrictions removed we could not hope to escape financial destruction The vittl iesuos beforo tbo peoplo of Arizona aro the reform of territorial and county government and the silvar question The first is moro important nt this time because it in mora urgent and there is opportunity of accomplishing muoh toward securing better gov ernment and an ubatemont of taxes if the business men and property owners can bo trotlsed from their apathy and induced to take an active interest in political afiairs We believe that re forms could best be accomplished by the organization in every county of a citizens loague independent of any political party An organization of this kind comprising the business mcn proporty owners and representatives of the mining cattle and agricultural interests could exert a powerful influence upon the oxuhng political parties by urging tbe nomination of clean and competent men for office and by sup porting only such men in eleotions There is too much disposition among business men to shirk their political responsibilities because they do not want to give tbo time from their privato af fairs or for fear that they might make onmitios which would iujuro them In thoir business So long as the in iluential business men of tbe territory pursue this narrow short frighted poli cy just so long will we have corruption and mismanagement in oar government A citizens leagno in Qloba might exert a salutary influence in many directions There aro many abuses to correct and questions affecting the welfare and progress of the town and county to determine The silver question is ono upon whioh we cannot hope for immediate action but it is nevertheless sdvisible and nc ceiiary to keep it prominently before the people as the one great issue intimately affecting tbo prosperity of the west Arizona although she has no direct voico in national affairs nevertheless exerts an influence which is of no small importance to advocates of silver coinage and the agitation of other questions should not be permitted to dwarf the issue of free silver coinage HEYE VUE SfAJIPS NOT NEEDED From the San Luis Valley Colo Graphic The following letter printed for the benefit of parties interested sliows that Commissioner Howbert
