TOPICS jt ViMtAv4MuMMiIMpWWV Tar rxorosLD dam xrin the moltii or TOM UUMC ArMFii Gila Co Arizona August 1st 1889 EniTons SiLvtn Bslt During tho pat week thera has been a paily heie under the auspices of Maricopa county consisting of Suiveyor Brecken lidge James McClintock and Col Norton collecting data and making estimates of tho quantify of water that a dam would hold built in the box canyon near the mouth of Tonto Creek Their estimate is based on a two hundred foot dam located about one-quarter of a mile below where Tonto empties into Salt River whoro they find tho bed of the river two bundled feet wjde with sloping walls on either sidd composed of sandstone and limo rock sloping back ono foot with each foot in height to the elevation of one thousand feet The Aneioid barometer shows an elevation abovo tho dam at Allens crossing of thiity feet at Steam Boat Rock sixty feet at Armors house one bundled feet at Robeifsous crossing ono bundled aud teii feet and at mouth of Pinto Crack tmo hundred and foity feet Hon Peteii ranch is eighty feet higher than the dam They find tho valley below Steam Boat Rock to be two miles wide and above about the same It is estimated that wore this dam built over one million acics of aiid land inMaii copa county would be leclaimed and tuined in to tho best of aiablo lanch es and a sufficient quantity of water stored to irrigate tho same While I hey approximate not over ono thousand acres under cultivation on Salt River iu Gila County at tho present time One half the dam if built will be in Gila County and tho other half in Maricopa Thaio is where tho sol ous of Gila let their foot slip iu establishing the county boundary A lough estimate of the cost of the dam would bo fiom eight hundred thousand to ono million dollars It would make a lake about twenty five miles long by two wide and au average of about eighty feet deep Salt River at Phcsnix duiing tho past three months has only been affording about twelve thousand inches of water and the Arizona canal alone has a capacity of sixty thousand inches It is no doubl inevitable that the dam will bo built in tho not far distant future if not by tho Government by private enterprise as the lower Salt River valley has not wafer enough to inicato what land is already under cultivation If tho dam is built tho Government will no doubt condemn the land thai to bo flooded and those now iu possession will be paid a reasonable amount and Gila County iudemnified This is the basis of a report thaf Maricopa will make lo the Senate committee in September nexf The reading of tho Aneroid makes
