The GAZETTE, Montreal, Feb. 18, 1977 Cauthen just keeps riding high may earn $1 million by age 18 If superstar apprentice jockey Steve Cauthen doesn't spill and crack his noggin, he may become the first professional athlete to earn $1 million before he's 18. There's no telling what riding records Cauthen, 16, will set this year. "I'm not shooting for any records," he says. "I'm just trying to ride winners.

I ride to win, you Riding to win was Eddie Arcaro's famous line. Cauthen's net earnings last year when he rode 240 winners can be estimated at $40,000 while riding for much smaller purses. Cauthen's current weekly earnings riding at Aqueduct average approximately $15,000. The shy kid from Walton, can hardly keep up this pace all year, but if he's that super his earnings for the year might gross $700,000. Five-pound edge By DAVE FELDMAN Chicago Daily News Cauthen looks like a cinch to coin all that big money at least while he's an apprentice, getting that five-pound weight allowance for all his mounts with the exception of stakes races.

He'll lose that advantage May 27, the date he rode his first winner last year. He'll be 17 May 1. "The kid will go on and on," says his agent, Lennie Goodman. "That five-pound allowance he'll lose won't cost him any mounts. He's that good and everybody knows it.

He's the greatest thing that happened to horse racing. That includes Secretariat." Cauthen now is sportsdom's biggest attraction. Track managements everywhere are begging for his appearances. Santa Anita wanted and got him, Sunday crowds at Santa Anita are usually 35,000 to 40,000. When Cauthen rode there a few weeks ago, the attendance boomed to 57,000.

"I'm going crazy with phone calls," said Goodman. "Everybody wants Cauthen. We can ride at only one track, really, to keep our customers and keep them happy. I haven't had any rest. I've been an agent for great jockeys, but I've never seen anything like this.

"TV and radio stations want to use Cauthen. The kid has started to work for one outfit making TV commercials. One guy already wants to make a movie. Another network is going to use him on a show Bonnets entries FIRST RACE: Trot claiming handicap up to 11,500 Purse 3,100 7-Ramrod Lobell Lachance 5-2 5-Simca Hanover Pelletier 3-1 2-Waysmoke Brosseau 4-1 1-Heavy Duty Gamache 9-2 3-Mr Society Normandin 5--1 6-Delvin Herbert Grise 6-1 4-Noble Reward Bardier 8-1 8-Darn Flashy Pick Dostie 8-1 SECOND RACE: Pace claiming 5,000 Purse 1,900 7-John's Duke Jones 5-2 8-Fastkat 3-1 4-Bonny Hanna 4-1 2-Choice Hanover 9-2 3-Jerry Butler Genition 5-1 5-Bachelor Gay 6-1 6-Blythe Hill Bourgeois 1-Central Time 8-1 THIRD RACE: Trot non-winners of 3,500 Purse 4,400 1-Sambo Rovigael Bruyere 5-2 7-Lindys Bojangles Ponton 3-1 4-Some Nevele Hanna 4-1 3-Willow Lane Seaman 9-2 5-Romeo Dum Miller 5-1 6-R. InterHuntingdon Protestant Cemetery. called 'Who's I get phone calls from trainers all over the country for the kid to ride in races or stakes. 'I even got a phone call from England the other night. "The fellow said: 'I'd like to get that chap over "What do I do with all these requests?" Goodman and Cauthen said Golden Gate, Gulfstream Park, Hialeah Park and even El Commandante in Puerto Rico are begging for Cauthen's appearance. Whether any big money was offered for Cauthen's appearances wasn't made known, but Goodman has never been a guy who understood charity.

How's Cauthen taking to his stardom? "I'm just enjoying life," he says. "My life is riding. I love it. There's nothing like it.I often dream I might ride the whole card of nine winners some day. Maybe it's just a dream, but I can dream, can't When Steve went to Santa Anita one Sunday he rode three winners including a $50,000 handicap winner.

He's won two $50,000 races at Aqueduct this year. He's won several $25,000 features. Before yesterday, he had ridden 106 winners there since the meet opened Jan. 3. That's a record at any man's track for 38 days of a surpassing the mark of 105 in 50 days set by Johnny Longden, a Hall of Famer, on the Pacific Coast in 1952.

Earlier, Cauthen eclipsed the apprentice record of Bill Shoemaker, the winningest jockey in racing. An average close to three winners a day is terrific anywhere and absolutely super in New York, where riding is usually tougher. Will Cauthen bust money winning riding records? Maybe so. Jockey Angel Cordero set a mark last year winning purses of $4,700,000. Cauthen has won $1.1 million in less than a month and a half.

Three wins NEW YORK (UPI) Steve Cauthen, the 16-year-old apprentice riding sensation, continued his torrid streak at Aqueduct yesterday, bringing home three winners for the third consecutive day to boost his winning mounts to 13 in four days.
