The operation was unusual in many ways. Because of pari-mutuel problems, these famous machines were dis "There's never been anything like It," Georges recalled. "Fred Orpen decided to run Wednesday and Saturday afternoon harness cards at Dufferin in the late Fall and early Winter. There would be a layoff around Christmas and New Year. Then they'd go again until the last of February." Horses and horsemen from Ontario and Quebec participated in the Winter racing carnival over Dufferin's historic, half-mile oval.

Two to three hundred horses fre four-cards-per week basis until March. Georges Glguer, Richelieu racing secretary, and one of the country's most knowledgeable harness authorities, talked about the new Montreal venture yesterday. was reminded of a harness racing era between the latt 1930's and early 1950's, with several recesses along the route, when Toronto's old Dufferin Park was the scene of some of the most weird and wonderful sulky competition in North American history. pensed with. Through a "tolerance" arrangement with authorities, owner Orpen was able to resurrect old Ontario racetrack charters and install three bookmaking stalls.

They were directed by the late Harold "Wicksie" Wicks, a colorful harness official on Ontario tracks. "The booze business was Illegal but tolerated because it kept the customers from freezing to death. As added entertainment, Orpen used to play an electric orgaa, and pump music around the grandstand area. In many ways it was liki a country fair." In addition to the stern liquids and the love of horses to keep them warm, huge storm doors sheltered the betting ring. There ere half a dozen old Quebec heaters and pot-bellied stoves in the enclosures in front and under the rickety old grandstand.

Giguere remembered one occasion when a happy fellow, loaded with "grape" and booking money, weaved his way to a Bloor Street cab stand, He became weary and sleepy. Spotting a friendly looking house, he stepped Inside; made his way upstairs to a bed-room, took off his clothes and fiopped under the covers. A startled housekeeper was unable to rouse the intruder and phoned the Swansea police. "Mr. Orpea bailed him out," Giguere related, "and the guy was the hot-stove hero the rest of the Winter." That's the way things were In Toronto The Good in an earlier era of Winter harness racing.

Something new hat been added in Montreal harness racing expansion with the announcement that Blue Bonnets will launch a four-pro gramsper-week Winter meeting at the Decarie establishment. In response to the popular demand by both the two-dollar bettor and horsemen, and a friendly whinny from the standardbreds, Bonnets will come alive again January 28. Montreal's longest harness season will close Monday night, then re-open on the He's" A Smoothie 3-1 Favorite Selections At Blue Bonnets olds foaled in the Old Line State. The Chrysanthemum, on the turf at 1 1-16 miles, originally was slated for last Saturday but racing that day at the Maryland track was called off because of snow. There'll be 10 in the field with Swinging Mood the probable choice under top-weight of 126 pounds.

The Marylander attracted six with Dancer's Image and Sky Sailor toting topweight of 124 pounds each. Nine were entered in the 1 1-16-miles of the Tropicana Hotel Handicap at Bay Meadows with the two highweights, Ascomico, 122, and Most Host, 121, figuring high in the pre-race calculations. Sikkim, last year's winner with a weight assignment of 122 pounds, and Country Friend and Seguidor 2nd, with 121 each, head a field of 12 named for the six furlongs of the $10,000 Gold Coast at Tropical Park. It will be the first start in the U.S. for the Latin American thoroughbred owned by Santiago Ledwith. He arrived from Caracas only last Tuesday. Victory, however, by Pairo would not be new to the Display. Last year Damelo came here from Argentine to run In the testing race and it was his first start in the United States.

He won by three-quarters of a length over Bol 'N Jac, who'll be back today. Three years ago, Ledwith shipped Primordial 2nd to Laurel, Md. for the Washington D.C. International. After failing in that race, Primordial came back to take the Display with an amazing stretch run.

Pairo, who'll carry 118 pounds and be ridden by Sandino Hernandez, was quoted at 8-1 in the betting line issued by the track. His 1967 record shows five victories, three seconds and four thirds in 14 starts, including triumph in the Clasico Internacional de las Americas. He's A Smoothie, winner of seven of his 13 starts this year with three thirds, will carry -w I of 126 pounds with Braulio Baeza in the saddle. In his last the Canadian finished fourth back of Fort Marcy and Damascus of the U.S. and Australia's Tobin Bronze in the International at Laurel.

The track handicapper pegged He's A Smoothie, owned by Bill Beasley and trained by his son, Warren, at 3-1 to take down the major share of the prize money. With 12 starters the Display will be worth $59,000 with $38,350 going to the winner. On the basis of the advance line, the best of the U.S. representatives figure to be Quicken Tree, 4-1; Understanding, 6-1; and Setto Bello, 8-1. Dunderhead, the second lightweight at 119 pounds, was quoted at 10-1.

There'll be two features at Laurel with one of them the postponed Chrysanthemum for fillies and mares. The other will be the 1 1-16 miles of the Marylander for 2-year- The Montreal harness racing season moves into the homestretch this weekend with the final three programs of the lengthy campaign carded at Blue Bonnets Raceway tonight, tomorrow afternoon and Monday evening. The closing weekend cards are liberally sprinkled with top-notch racing fare as the record season is expected to wind up on a highly-successful note. Tomorrow afternoon, for instance, seven of the top pacers on the grounds will match strides in an open mile pacing event for a lucrative $10,000 jackpot. Tonight's feature attraction is a preferred trot for $8,000.

Heading the pacing field tomorrow are the likes of Le Lion, Perfect Knight and Dr. Harry C. Track handicapper Leon Bouchard has pegged Le Lion a solid 2-1 early choice despite the veteran campaigner's last two lack-lustre efforts. In only 14 races this year, the injury-prone Le Lion has carved a 6-1-2 record and earned $19,552. Camille Dupre will handle Le Lion as usual and the pair will leave from the favorable third starting position.

Herve i 1 i 's Perfect Knight has been established a 7-2 runner-up choice on the basis of his last three starts, all of wich he has won including a pair at Boston's Suffolk Downs and Blue Bonnets. Perfect Knight has a 1967 bankroll of $30,937 on a 9-5-3 record in 33 races. Dr. Harry to be driven by Maritime ace Jim MacGregor, is a 4-1 morning line choice. This six-year-old stallion is one of the most active campaigners in harness -rac ing this year already having started 47 times with a record of 14-5-11 and earnings of $32,945.

The outsiders in the event will be Andy's Son, R. Yankee Wann, Miss Baker Adios and Walvis Bay. This evening's feature' trotting event will see the graduation of Denis Larochel'e's aptly named Proudly into the preferred ranks for the first time after winning four straight races in lower classifications. Proudly, a well-bred five-year-old son of Star's Pride, has toyed with his opposition in the lesser ranks and is a lukewarm 3-1 choice to continue his winning ways against proven handicap performers like Early Date, Gloria Elkington, Jill Fedor, Coronado Hanover, Dark Flash and Van's First.
